Familial hyperaldosteronism.

Primary aldosteronism (PAL) may be as much as ten times more common than has been traditionally thought, with most patients normokalemic. Th … iochemically and morphologically indistinguishable from apparently sporadic PAL. In one informative family available for linkage analysis, FH-II does not segregate with either the CYP11B2, AT1 or MEN1 genes, but a genome-wide search has revealed linkage with a locus in chromosome 7. As has already occurred in FH-I, elucidation of causative mutations is l …

Familial camptodactyly.

Camptodactyly is a permanent flexion deformity at the interphalangeal joints, usually at the proximal, interphalangeal joints. It is by far most commonly encountered in the little finger, but it can occur in any of the others, and may be associated with a deformity in the little finger or not. It is usually bilateral. It can also appear in the toes, the second toe being the most frequently affected. This deformity can appear in two different situations: it can occur in isolation, or can be a part of a malformative syndrome. It can also be sporadic or be transmitted as an autosomal dominant tra

Gliomas in families.

This is a descriptive study of 19 families with glial tumors. Twelve were identified prospectively from 178 consecutive, unrelated adults and children with newly diagnosed gliomas seen at a regional cancer center between 01 Jan 89 and 31 Mar 91 (6.7%). There were 45 affected members (42 confirmed); 30 males, 15 females, ages 4 months-78 years (median, 44.5 years; mean, 38.9 years). Two families had four affected members, three families had three, and the others two. All confirmed tumors were supratentorial and all, save one, contained an astrocytic element. Three additional members of two fami

Familial intussusception.

We report a father and two sons who each suffered from recurrent acute ileocolic intussusception in childhood, suggesting that there may in some cases be a genetic predisposition to the condition. This might have an anatomical basis.

[Familial sarcoidosis].

Familial sarcoidosis is a pathologic association rarely described in the Spanish literature. We present a study of a family in which two members were clinically affected (Löfgren's syndrome) existing subclinical pathological signs in the rest. Based on this association the epidemiological, clinical and pathogenic mechanisms of familial sarcoidosis are reviewed with special attention to the incidence of this association in literature (in the Spanish literature in particular) and in the study of histocompatibility antigens in these patients. To conclude, the importance of investigating in a dire…

Familial koilonychia.

Koilonychia is a well-recognized clinical sign of iron deficiency occurring either with or without anemia. A case of familial koilonychia with an inheritance pattern consistent with an autosomal dominant trait is presented. Comments on inherited koilonychia and other causes of koilonychia are also included. The possible causes of the nail disorder are discussed.

Familial acromegaly.

Five family members over 3 generations had isolated functional pituitary adenomas diagnosed. In four cases acromegaly was diagnosed, and in the fifth galactorrhoea from prolactin excess was the presenting feature. A prominent feature of the affected members tumours were histological finding of either atypical mixed cell or undifferentiated cell type. Given the low incidence of acromegaly and the demonstration of vertical transmission over 3 generations it is suggested this family represents an inherited pituitary syndrome, distinct from Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) type 1.

[Familial nanophthalmos].

Microphthalmos is a rare, potentially devastating condition. Catsch found 30 cases of microphthalmos in a population of 26,735 (0.11%); Scou … ma without uveal effusion not microcornea are reported. The occurrence of nanophthalmos in the same family suggests an autosomal recessive inheritance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Familial iridoplegia.

Fixed, dilated pupils in childhood are usually due to interruption of parasympathetic innervation as a result of neurologic impairments or occur following pharmacologic mydriasis. We present a familial form of iridoplegia without structural defects of the eye which is consistent with a probable autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Examination of other family members should be part of an affected individual's evaluation particularly when this finding occurs as an isolated defect. Recognition of such an entity may avoid unnecessary neurodiagnostic studies in an affected individual.

Familial streblodactyly.

A family is described in which female members of two generations were affected from birth from a flexion deformity of the fingers. The pedigree analysis suggests the possibility of a sex-limited autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. This rare condition, which has been reported only once in the literature, is known by the term streblodactyly (streblos = Gr. twisted, crooked).
