BACKGROUND: The development of gross motor coordination (GMC) is governed by biological and environmental factors whose effect sizes are still unclear.
AIM: To investigate sibling resemblance in GMC, as well as biological and environmental correlates of GMC among Peruvian children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample comprised 1256 biological siblings (6-15 years old), from three geographical areas of Peru. GMC was assessed using the Korperkoordinationtest für Kinder (KTK) test battery. Anthropometry, biological maturation and physical fitness (PF) were also measured. Multilevel modelling was

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: One of the important modern problems in the practice of a family doctor is the protection of reproductive health. Reproductive problems in marriage, including male infertility, are important components of demographic processes, therefore, attempts to resolve them are not only medical, but also social significance. Of all the physiological systems of man, for which the patterns of adaptation mechanisms are shown, the most "vulnerable" is the reproductive system, whose functioning depends on the set of exo- and endogenous influences. Unlike specific genital pathology, re

Low-income families often simultaneously encounter housing and neighborhood problems pertaining to safety, affordability, and quality issues that necessitate strategies to maximize limited budgets and ensure safety. Such constrained decisions regarding inadequate housing and poor neighborhood conditions, however, may themselves create or exacerbate health risks. Building on the survival strategies literature, this article offers rich and detailed accounts of coping and management strategies on the part of vulnerable families facing housing and neighborhood hardships. The findings are based on

OBJECTIVES: To determine the influences of victimization experience and familial factors on the association between sexual minority status and psychological health outcomes among adolescents.
METHODS: We used data from the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden, a prospective, population-based study of all twins born in Sweden since 1992. Cross-sectional analyses included individuals who completed assessments at age 18 years (n = 4898) from 2000 to 2013. We also compared psychological health among sexual minority adolescents and their nonminority co-twins.
RESULTS: Sexual minority adolesc

The Viverridae is a family of nocturnal carnivores including civets, genets and African linsangs. While a list of known organisms isolated from a species is an essential tool for population management, this review represents the first attempt to collate published reports of organisms isolated from viverrids. A wide range of organisms, including 11 viruses, eight bacterial species, one internal arthropod species, representatives from eight genera of protozoan, 21 genera of nematode, seven genera of cestode, eight genera of trematode and six genera of external arthropod (mites, ticks and louse),

In this article, we draw on a 2012 Montreal-based study that examined the embodied, every day practices of immigrant children and families in the context of urban greenspaces such as parks, fields, backyards, streetscapes, gardens, forests and rivers. Results suggest that activities in the natural environment serve as a protective factor in the health and well-being of this population, providing emotional and physical nourishment in the face of adversity. Using the Social Determinants of Health model adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO, 1998), we analyze how participants accessed urb

BACKGROUND: Families with a melanoma history are at risk of melanoma. Melanoma survival improves when people are aware of their risk and ways to modify it. We explored at-risk families' perceived risk communication from healthcare providers.
METHODS: Qualitative description.
RESULTS: Participants perceived: (1) few provider discussions of melanoma risk or risk-modifying behaviors; (2) a desire to trust information from providers; (3) the healthcare system constrains communication; and (4) concerns about provider competence and caring regarding worrisome lesions.
CONCLUSIONS: Providers shoul

Long-term homelessness is associated with other psychosocial risk factors (e.g., adult mental illness, substance abuse, and exposure to violence). All of these factors are associated with impairments in parenting effectiveness and child adjustment, but there are very limited data investigating parenting among families who are homeless and highly mobile. In particular, there is no literature examining the relationships among observed parenting, parental mental health, and child adjustment in a supportive housing sample. Data are reported from a multimethod study of 200 children in 127 families

Bipolar-related subphenotypes that cluster within families may help identify subsets of patients that are more genetically homogeneous. Environmental or assessment factors that segregate by family may influence estimates of familiality. We aimed to determine familiality of subphenotypes of bipolar disorder (BP), accounting for effects of age, sex, diagnosis, and site/wave of ascertainment. We studied 589 sibships with 1416 siblings affected with bipolar I (BPI), schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type (SAB), bipolar II (BPII), or recurrent unipolar depression (RUDD). Sibships were from families

OBJECTIVE: Based on the framework of household utility maximization and health capital decision-making, this study proposes that parental intergenerational nurturing may influence catastrophic health expenditures through two competing mechanisms: first, the "squeeze effect," wherein intensive resource investment in children may increase parental economic vulnerability; second, the "reverse flow effect," wherein intergenerational reciprocity can stabilize household health security. Within this theoretical tension, this study examines whether parental intergenerational investment ultimately stra

BACKGROUND: Intensive lipid-lowering therapy is crucial for individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) to reach target low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. However, there are limited data on disparities in therapy use among FH patients in the US.
METHODS: An epidemiologic analysis of a US healthcare claims database (2016-2020) covering 324 million individuals. Inclusion criteria for this study comprised of individuals with a diagnosis of FH, defined by an ICD-10 diagnosis code of E.78.01. The G-computation approach based on multiple logistic regression models was used

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder that is strongly associated with premature cardiovascular disease. Effective diagnosis and appropriate treatment of FH can reduce cardiovascular disease risk; however, FH is underdiagnosed. Electronic health record (EHR)-based FH screening tools have been previously described to enhance the detection of FH.
OBJECTIVES: This scoping review explored the available literature on the performance and utility of existing EHR-based FH screening algorithms or tools.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase from incepti

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the impact of financial hardship on children whose parents have been incarcerated, describe both existing cash transfer and guaranteed income programs, and highlight their impact on child and family well being.
RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging data on guaranteed income programs for formerly incarcerated adults indicates that the funds improve recipient health and legal system outcomes and allow participants to spend funds on stabilizing themselves and their families. Guaranteed income programs in the broader population similarly highlight the use of funds to support f

IMPORTANCE: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an underdiagnosed and undertreated genetic disorder that leads to premature morbidity and mortality due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Familial hypercholesterolemia affects 1 in 200 to 250 people around the world of every race and ethnicity. The lack of general awareness of FH among the public and medical community has resulted in only 10% of the FH population being diagnosed and adequately treated. The World Health Organization recognized FH as a public health priority in 1998 during a consultation meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. T
