Necrotizing fasciitis following varicella in a child.

Varicella is a self-limited disease, but sometimes it may be associated with some serious life-threatening complications.Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare complication of varicella. This is a case of a 7-year-old girl with septic shock caused by necrotizing fasciitis as a complication of varicella. Swelling and pain in the left inguinal region and left axillary region were found five days after varicella. Then a high fever occurred followed by hypotension. Fluid infusion, vasopressor and antibiotics were administered. Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus was isolated from exudates from the wound

Necrotizing fasciitis: is the bacterial spectrum changing?

PURPOSE: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, but potentially fatal pathology. The aim of the present study was to identify the population characteristics of the NF patients, the responsible bacteria, and the differences between survivors and nonsurvivors. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, all patients with NF from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2010, treated in an academic level 1 trauma center, were identified, and their medical records were reviewed. RESULTS: The mortality rate of the 24 identified patients was 20.8 %. The majority of the infections (54.2 %) (13/24) we

[Periorbital necrotizing fasciitis: a complication of a dacryocystorhinostomy].

We report a rare case of periorbital necrotizing fasciitis following a dacryocystorhinostomy procedure. We describe the common features of this rare infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues and discuss the different management strategies as well as the controversial role of anti-inflammatory medication in treating this condition.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the extremities: a prospective study.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive infection and is a necrosis of the fascia and surrounding tissues. Despite recent advances in its management, outcomes have not improved and mortality rate is still high. Between September 2007 and August 2009, we prospectively studied twenty-four histopathologically proven necrotizing fasciitis patients to assess the prognostic factors that indicate the outcome. Mortality rate was 20.8%. Twelve patients (50%) improved, while seven patients (29.2%) were complicated by limb loss. Mortality rates related to upper and lower limb involvement were simi

[A fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis of the neck].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but life-threatening soft-tissue infection primarily involving the superficial fascia and subcutaneous tissue. Only early diagnosis and aggressive therapy including broad-spectrum antibiotics and surgical intervention can avoid systemic toxicity associated with a high mortality rate. Necrotizing fasciitis is rarely seen in the head and neck region. In this article, we report a fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis in the neck of 75-years-old female patient and reviewed the microbiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of this rare infection together with litera

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius necrotizing fasciitis in a dog.

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius was implicated as the cause of rapidly progressive and fatal necrotizing fasciitis in a dog. The isolate was methicillin-susceptible and did not contain genes encoding the Panton-Valentine leukocidin. While Streptococcus canis is typically considered to be the main cause of necrotizing fasciitis in dogs, staphylococci should also be considered.

Necrotizing fasciitis of eyelid secondary to parotitis.

PURPOSE: Evaluation of a patient with necrotizing fasciitis of the eyelid spreading from parotid gland. METHODS: Interventional case report. The patient admitted with rapidly progressive swelling, redness, and pain of four eyelids, and whole face. Pathogenic microorganism was searched, laboratory tests were evaluated. Intensive medical treatment and necrotic wound debridement was performed. RESULTS: The patient had been receiving oral cephalosporin at the time she was referred to our hospital, but her infection had spread rapidly under this treatment. In addition to her eyelid necrosis, sept

Predictors of mortality in patients with necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon and life-threatening soft tissue infection with high mortality. Though early aggressive surgical intervention is important for improving survival, the impact of mortality from different microorganisms remains uncertain. Our study aims to identify the association of mortality and different microorganisms, and the positive and negative predictors of mortality in patients with necrotizing fasciitis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients admitted via the emergency department (ED) with discharged diagnosis of necrotizing fasciit

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical, microbiological, serological and radiological findings including the results of treatment in a Danish patient population with necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in the head and neck region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were retrieved from patient records with the ICD3 code DM725A from January 1, 2002-June 30 2007. Demographic data, clinical manifestations, microbiological and serological findings, treatment modalities, complications and sequelae were registered. RESULTS: Twelve patients were identified during the 5-year period at the ENT department, Aarhus Univer

The nurse's role in managing necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), also known as "flesh-eating disease," is a rapid-acting, potentially deadly infection. This condition is devastating in its ability to spread through the body at an alarming rate. It can be caused by almost any type of injury that introduces microorganisms into the subcutaneous tissues. The initial assessment can be deceptive, so awareness is the key to recognition. This condition often goes unrecognized until it is too late or major disfigurement results. Vital nursing strategies for managing the care of patients with NF include early recognition, accurate assessme

[The necrotizing fasciitis of the leg in diabetic patients].

The necrotizing fasciitis is a life threatening disease, since its mortality reaches 30-35%, in different studies. In diabetic patients, the incidence and severity of this illness are even higher. The authors present a series of 39 diabetic patients with necrotizing fasciitis of the leg, which were operated between 2001 and 2006 in the Surgical Department of "Dr. I. Cantacuzino" Clinical Hospital, from Bucharest. It is emphasized the importance of a complete diagnosis and the surgical treatment of all the suppurative processes. Sometimes, more than one procedure is required, in order to achiev

Management of necrotizing fasciitis in diabetic patients.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening condition in diabetic patients; its management and salvage of the patient is a formidable challenge. Diabetes mellitus is one of the serious conditions associated with necrotizing fasciitis. It is a disorder that primarily affects the microvascular circulation. We review our experience and present our approach to necrotizing fasciitis in patients with diabetes mellitus. All cases of necrotizing fasciitis treated at Inonu University, Turgut Ozal Medical Center, from January 1997 to December 2003 were reviewed. A review of 59 charts identified 11 cases

[Surgical concept and results of necrotizing fasciitis].

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is still a source of high morbidity and mortality. These difficult cases are increasingly referred to burn centers due to special wound and critical care issues. Here we examine our institution's recent experience with a large series of NF. METHOD: We performed a retrospective chart review of 32 consecutive patients over a 10-year period with NF who required radical surgical debridement and surface reconstruction. RESULTS: Overall survival was 85%, with average length of stay of 74.0+/-7.5 days for survivors (S) and 68.8+/-6.3 days for nonsurvivors (NS)
