Feasibility Study of a Smartphone Application for Detecting Skin Cancers in People With Albinism.

PURPOSE: Albinism affects some facets of the eye's function and coloration, as well as hair and skin color. The prevalence of albinism is estimated to be one in 2,000-5,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa and one in 270 in Tanzania. People in Tanzania with albinism experience sociocultural and economic disparities. Because of stigma related to albinism, they present to hospitals with advanced disease, including skin cancers. Mobile health (mHealth) can help to bridge some of the gaps in detection and treatment of skin cancers affecting this population. METHODS: We assessed the feasibility of usi

Reward Devaluation in Autistic Children and Adolescents with Complex Needs: A Feasibility Study.

Rewards act as a motivator for positive behavior and learning. Although compounding evidence indicates that reward processing operates differently in autistic individuals who do not have co-occurring learning disabilities, little is known about individuals who have such difficulties or other complex needs. This study aimed first to assess the feasibility of using an adapted reward devaluation paradigm to examine basic reward processes in this underrepresented population, and second to investigate whether autistic children and adolescents with complex needs would show dynamic behavioral changes

Brain-Responsive Neurostimulation for Loss of Control Eating: Early Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Loss of control (LOC) is a pervasive feature of binge eating, which contributes significantly to the growing epidemic of obesity; approximately 80 million US adults are obese. Brain-responsive neurostimulation guided by the delta band was previously found to block binge-eating behavior in mice. Following novel preclinical work and a human case study demonstrating an association between the delta band and reward anticipation, the US Food and Drug Administration approved an Investigational Device Exemption for a first-in-human study. OBJECTIVE: To assess feasibility, safety, and non

A feasibility study towards instrumentation of the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (iSCAT).

The Sports Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) is a pen and paper-based evaluation tool for use by healthcare professionals in the acute evaluation of suspected concussion. Here we present a feasibility study towards instrumented SCAT (iSCAT). Traditionally, a healthcare professional subjectively counts errors according to SCAT marking criteria matrix. It is hypothesized that an instrumented version of the test will be more accurate while providing additional digital-based parameters to better inform player management. The feasibility study focuses on the SCAT physical functioning tasks only: do

Feasibility of arthroscopic decompression of the axillary nerve in the quadrilateral space: Cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: Axillary nerve compression is a rare, but disabling condition. The three main causes are quadrilateral space syndrome among young athletes, compression due to an inferior glenohumeral osteophyte in early osteoarthritis and isolated teres minor atrophy secondary to triceps hypertrophy. The diagnosis is clinical, but may be reinforced by an electromyogram or corticosteroid injection. The usual surgical treatment is open nerve decompression using a posterior approach. Arthroscopy is a less invasive approach that should be useful in theory. HYPOTHESIS: Arthroscopic decompression of

Assessment of Ergonomic Strain and Positioning During Bronchoscopic Procedures: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Poor ergonomics place health care workers at risk for work-related overuse injuries. Repetitive and prolonged hand maneuvers, such as those performed during endoscopic procedures, may lead to musculoskeletal complaints and work-related injuries. However, the prevalence of health care-related work injuries among physicians is thought to be underreported and there is a paucity of literature investigating the impact of ergonomic strain on bronchoscopy. We designed a feasibility study to explore the differences in ergonomic strain and muscle activity of bronchoscopists. MATERIALS AND

Increasing Blood Pressure by Greater Splanchnic Nerve Stimulation: a Feasibility Study.

The splanchnic vascular compartment is the major reservoir for intravascular blood volume, and dysregulation of the compartment was implicated in a series of cardiovascular conditions. We explored feasibility and effectiveness of an implantable cuff system on the greater splanchnic nerve (GSN) in healthy canines for short- and long-term neuromodulation to affect the circulation. Five mongrel hounds underwent minimally invasive right-sided unilateral GSN cuff placement. All animals underwent same day GSN stimulation and repeat stimulation at 9-30 days. Stimulation parameter optimization was con

Extended Endoscopic Endonasal Clipping of Intracranial Aneurysms: An Anatomic Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial aneurysms (IAs) located in the midline region represent formidable challenge owing to their deep location. The objective of this study was to assess feasibility and identify the limitations of endoscopic endonasal clipping of IAs. We further aimed to describe the locations and characteristics of aneurysms that may be amenable for endoscopic endonasal clipping; thus outlining the indications of these approaches. METHODS: Fifteen latex-injected cadaveric heads were used for endoscopic endonasal exposure of anterior and posterior cerebral circulations. An aneurysm simula

Feasibility study on the utilization of coal mining waste for Portland clinker production.

CMWs (coal mine wastes) as the waste products of coal exploitation or washing plants are a source of pollution that generates waste management problems, especially those that are very old and without a known owner. CMW chemical composition indicates that it contains SiO2-Al2O3-Fe2O3 in such percentages that it can be used in the production of Portland cement clinker, which can lead to potential savings in clinker production, not only in raw material but also in fuels if the CMW has a minimum calorific value and has not suffered self-combustion. After characterization of different CMWs from min

Feasibility of photobiomodulation therapy for the prevention of radiodermatitis: a single-institution pilot study.

Acute radiodermatitis is one of the major complications when radiation therapy (RT) is delivered to the head and neck region in cases of head and neck cancers or lung cancers with supraclavicular lymph node metastasis. In these cases, high dose of RT is generally used so that acute radiodermatitis is observed in more than 90% of patients, and it negatively affects patients' quality of life. In this pilot study, we evaluated the clinical feasibility of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy before conducting a randomized trial based on the hypothesis that PBM therapy may reduce the severity of radiod

Radioactive seed localisation of non-palpable lymph nodes - A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Radioactive seed localisation (RSL) is a preoperative localisation method using a small titanium seed containing iodine-125. The method is increasingly applied for localising non-palpable lesions in the treatment of breast cancer. We believe that RSL has the potential to be used in various surgical specialties. The aim of this feasibility study was to test RSL as a preoperative localisation of non-palpable lymph nodes. METHODS: Between November 24, 2015 and October 26, 2016, 15 patients with suspicious lymph nodes on imaging were included in the study. The lymph nodes were located
