Perinatal depressive symptoms and subsequent fertility intention: a multicenter cohort study in Japan.

Declining fertility rates represent a critical demographic challenge worldwide. While socioeconomic determinants of reproductive decision-making have been studied, the influence of maternal mental health on subsequent fertility intention remains unclear. In this multicenter prospective cohort study in Japan, 689 pregnant women were followed up to one month postpartum to examine whether postpartum depressive symptoms were associated with subsequent fertility intention, after adjustment for prespecified covariates (maternal age, partner age, parity, and maternal individual income). The Edinburgh

COVID-19: A Challenge to the Safety of Assisted Reproduction.

There is an increased risk of becoming pregnant through fertility treatments using assisted reproductive technology (ART) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this review is to gather comprehensive data from the existing literature on the potential risks of fertility management during the pandemic period, and outline strategies to mitigate them, with a focus on the hormonal and surgical procedures of ART. A comprehensive search of the scientific literature on COVID-19 in relation to fertility was conducted in the PubMed database using the keywords "coronavirus," "COVID-19," "SARS-CoV-2" an

Declining fertility and increasing use of traditional methods of family planning: a paradox in Uttar Pradesh, India?

Uttar Pradesh (UP), with more than 220 million people, is the most populous state in India. Despite a high unmet need for modern family planning methods, the state has experienced a substantial decline in fertility. India has also seen a decline during this period which can be attributed to the increased prevalence of modern methods of family planning, particularly female sterilisation, but in UP, the corresponding increase was marginal. At the same time, Traditional Family Planning Methods (TMs) increased significantly in UP in contrast to India, where it was marginal. The trends in UP raise

Abdominal radical trachelectomy in West London.

OBJECTIVE: Traditionally, the surgical management of invasive cervical carcinoma that has progressed beyond microinvasion has been a radical abdominal hysterectomy. However, this results in the loss of fertility, with significant consequences for the young patient. This report describes abdominal radical trachelectomy (ART) as a potential replacement for radical hysterectomy in patients with stage IA2-IIA cervical cancer who desire a fertility-sparing procedure without decreasing the curative rates. DESIGN: Observational, retrospective study. SETTING: Teaching hospital and regional cancer ce

Developmental arrest of fertilized eggs from the B6.YDOM sex-reversed female mouse.

When the Y chromosome of a Mus musculus domesticus mouse strain is placed onto the C57BL/6J (B6) inbred background, the XY progeny develop ovaries or ovotestes but never normal testes during fetal life. While some of the hermaphroditic males become fertile, none of the XY females produces litters. Here, we examined the fertility and development of oocytes derived from the XY female mouse. With or without preceding injection of gonadotropins, female mice were mated with normal B6 males, and their embryos were recovered at various developmental stages. In vitro fertilization was performed with t

Impact of Tobacco Smoke Exposure on Male Fertility: An In Vivo Study Using Drosophila melanogaster.

Tobacco smoke has been consistently associated with impaired spermatozoa quality in men, including decreased concentration, motility, and increased morphological abnormalities. Key tobacco-related toxins such as nicotine and cadmium induce oxidative stress, leading to DNA damage in germ cells. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of tobacco smoke exposure on male fertility using Drosophila melanogaster as an in vivo model. Fertility, fecundity, parental toxicity, lifespan, and spermatozoa morphology were assessed in two strains: the wild-type Oregon K and the DNA repair-deficient mus308. M

Short communication: Genetic variation in estrus activity traits.

Genetic variation in estrus traits derived from hourly measurements by electronic activity tags was studied in an experimental herd of Holstein (n = 211), Jersey (n = 126), and Red Dane (n = 178) cows. Both virgin heifers (n = 132) and lactating cows in the first 4 parities (n = 895 cow parities) were used, giving a total of 3,284 high-activity episodes indicating estrus. The first estrus after calving was predicted to occur on average, at 39, 44, and 45 d in milk for Red Danes, Holsteins, and Jerseys, respectively. Genetic variance was detected for the trait days to first high activity with a

Hyperbaric-induced subfertility in mice: lack of effect of decompression.

Male mice were exposed to 50 atmospheres absolute (ATA). He for 30 min, twice weekly for 5 wk and their fertility assessed by subsequently mating with untreated virgin females. The exposure schedule was designed to provide compression and decompression times the same as previous positive studies of hyperbaric-induced subfertility but with much shorter periods at maximum pressure (30 min vs. 24 h). We postulated that, if subfertility were associated with exposure to pressure per se rather than with compression or decompression, then the present experiments would fail to produce a decrease in ma

Metataxonomic Analysis of the Uterine Microbiota Associated with Low Fertility in Dairy Cows Using Endometrial Tissues Prior to First Artificial Insemination.

The deterioration in reproductive performance in association with low fertility leads to significant economic losses on dairy farms. The uterine microbiota has begun to attract attention as a possible cause of unexplained low fertility. We analyzed the uterine microbiota associated with fertility by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in dairy cows. First, the alpha (Chao1 and Shannon) and beta (unweighted and weighted UniFrac) diversities of 69 cows at four dairy farms that had passed the voluntary waiting period before the first artificial insemination (AI) were analyzed with respect to factor

Modeling Fertilization Outcome in a Changing World.

Marine organisms have complex life histories. For broadcast spawners, successful continuation of the population requires their small gametes to make contact in the water column for sufficiently long periods for fertilization to occur. Anthropogenic climate change has been shown to impact fertilization success in various marine invertebrates, including sea urchins, which are key grazers in their habitats. Gamete performance of both sexes declined when exposed to elevated temperatures and/or pCO2 levels. Examples of reduced performance included slower sperm swimming speed and thinning egg jelly

Impact of War on Fertility and Infertility.

BACKGROUND: War causes more death and disability than many major diseases. There are few studies in the context of the deleterious impact of war on fertility potential; therefore, in this study, we tried to review articles about the adverse effects of war on male/ female fertility potential. METHODS: In this study, a total of 183 articles related to the effects of war on fertility potential were examined by a systematic search using known international medical databases. RESULTS: Among these studies, there were limited studies on the effects of war on female infertility and most studies exam

Effect of feeding guanidinoacetic acid and L-arginine on the fertility rate and sperm penetration in the perivitelline layer of aged broiler breeder hens.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) and L-arginine (ARG) on fertility and sperm penetration (SP) rate of broiler breeder hens. In the first experiment, a total of 200 broiler breeder hens (Ross 308) aged 53 weeks were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments (0, 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g GAA/kg diet) with five replicates of 10 birds each. In the second experiment, 320 broiler breeder hens (Ross 308) were used from 53 to 62 weeks of age in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement (0 or 1.2 g GAA/kg diet along with 0, 3, 6 or 9 g ARG/kg diet). The hens

[Secular evolution and evolution according to autonomous communities of the frequency of fertility treatments, multiple deliveries and cesarean sections in Spain].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fertility treatments, multiple deliveries and caesarean sections are related to maternal age. Because maternal age has increased in Spain, it can also be expected an increase in these variables. We analyzed their evolution over the time and by maternal age, either globally and by Spanish Autonomous Communities. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: We studied a sample of 30,956 mothers of non-malformed newborn infants from all over Spain. STUDY PERIOD: between 1977 and June 2002. RESULTS: The percentage of fertility treatments shows a statistically significant increasing trend in a

Effects of electrical stimulation and seminal plasma on the motility of mouse sperm.

The effects of electric current (in vivo and in vitro) and seminal plasma on epididymal and ejaculated sperm obtained from C57BL x CBA and C57BL/6J mice were investigated by studying motility parameters, fertilization and embryo development. Electroejaculates were obtained by applying a series of computer-generated sinusoidal alternating currents (0.25-3.0 V at 50 Hz) delivered for 1, 2 and 3 s with 1-s rest periods using a four-electrode rectal probe for 4 min. Epididymal sperm obtained from the same mice were either subjected to electric current in vitro in a Plexiglass chamber or incubated

Assessment of environmental exposure to betamethasone on the reproductive function of female Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes).

Betamethasone has been extensively used in medicine in recent years and poses potential hazards to aquatic organisms. This study investigated the reproductive toxic effects of betamethasone exposure in fish, employing female Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) as a model. Betamethasone exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 20, 200, and 2000 ng/L) for a period of 15 weeks resulted in its high accumulation in the ovary, leading to abnormal oogenesis in female Japanese medaka. The production of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) in the pituitary gland was inhibited, and sex steroid biosyn

Reoperative orchiopexy: surgical aspects and functional outcome.

Over a 14-year period, a total of 40 patients underwent surgical revision after an unsuccessful orchiopexy attempt. Overall, 34 reorchiopexies (1 bilateral) and 7 orchiectomies were performed. All reorchiopexies were carried out using extensive mobilization of the testis and spermatic cord. This approach was sufficient for scrotal placement of the testis in 23 instances; however, it was necessary to transpose the spermatic vessels medially in the remaining 11 (incision of the transversalis fascia in 5, incision of the transversalis fascia and division of the inferior epigastric vessels in 6).

Family planning: cultural and religious perspectives.

The world population explosion has caused political leaders to look upon national and regional birth control projects as vital. Support for regulation of individual fertility has been evident in all cultures, and at all times, even in those societies in which social and religious rules have favoured the abundant production of children. As the secularization of Western society and scientific enquiry gained momentum during the modern period, knowledge of reproduction increased and was applied to control human population growth. The various methods of contraception and their development through t

Reduced homeobox protein MSX1 in human endometrial tissue is linked to infertility.

STUDY QUESTION: Is protein expression of the muscle segment homeobox gene family member MSX1 altered in the human secretory endometrium by cell type, developmental stage or fertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: MSX1 protein levels, normally elevated in the secretory phase endometrium, were significantly reduced in endometrial biopsies obtained from women of infertile couples. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Molecular changes in the endometrium are important for fertility in both animals and humans. Msx1 is expressed in the preimplantation mouse uterus and regulates uterine receptivity for implantation. The MSX
