Fetal brain development of twins assessed in utero by ultrasound: implications for schizophrenia.

There is evidence that some forms of schizophrenia are due to alterations of in utero brain development. Given the concordance rate for schi … idth) and body size (femur length, abdominal circumference) obtained during the second trimester of fetal development were retrospectively analyzed in 41 monozygotic and 103 dizygotic twin pairs. In monozygotic twin pairs, there was a significant difference in measures of biparietal diameter, head circumference, and ventricular width, as well as in femur length and …

Effects of buthionine sulfoximine on the outcome of the in utero administration of alcohol on fetal development.

The adverse effects of the maternal consumption of alcohol on the fetus have been recognized for centuries. Fetal alcohol syndrome is characterized by pre- and postnatal growth retardation, mental retardation, behavioral deficits, and facial deformities. Despite numerous animal studies, the biochemical mechanism(s) by which alcohol produces teratogenic effects on the developing fetus are not well understood. Several studies have shown that administration of alcohol to adult rats produces a decrease in hepatic levels of glutathione (GSH). In utero administration of alcohol has also been shown t

Effects of maternal dexamethasone therapy on fetal lung development in the rhesus monkey.

A large body of evidence demonstrates that antenatal glucocorticoids can accelerate fetal lung maturation. The purpose of this study was to delineate the optimal dose of dexamethasone and to determine whether a single- or multiple-injection regimen of the same total dexamethasone dosage was more effective in accelerating pulmonary development. Pregnant rhesus monkeys were injected with varying doses of dexamethasone or vehicle as either a single-bolus injection or as four separate injections, each spaced 12 hours apart. All maternal treatments were begun exactly 72 hours prior to delivery, and

Transfer of bovine embryos produced in vivo or in vitro: survival and fetal development.

The objectives of the present experiment were to compare survival after transfer of bovine embryos produced in vivo with those produced in vitro and to examine the physical characteristics of fetuses produced from these transfers. Embryos produced in vivo (Holstein x Angus) were recovered from uterine flushings of superovulated heifers 7 days after first artificial insemination, and embryos produced in vitro (Holstein x beef breeds) were collected 7 days after insemination. Embryos were paired by source (in vivo, in vitro), stage (compact morula, blastocyst), and quality grade (excellent = 1,

Fetal alcohol syndrome: the vulnerability of the developing brain and possible mechanisms of damage.

Fetal alcohol exposure has multiple deleterious effects on brain development, and represents a leading known cause of mental retardation. This review of the effects of alcohol exposure on the developing brain evaluates results from human, animal and in vitro studies, but focuses on key research issues, including possible mechanisms of damage. Factors that affect the risk and severity of fetal alcohol damage also are considered.

The development and establishment of hemopoiesis in fetal and newborn osteopetrotic (op/op) mice.

Previous studies of young CSF-1-less osteopetrotic (op/op) mice demonstrate a severe deficiency of both macrophages and osteoclasts, resulting in excessive bone formation, occlusion of the marrow cavity, and reduced hemopoietic activity. The accompanying splenomegaly and prolonged splenic hemopoiesis observed in these mice suggests that osteopetrosis may perturb the normal progression of fetal hemopoietic development and obstruct the seeding of hemopoietic precursors into the bone marrow. This study demonstrates that the absence of CSF-1 does not affect the progression of hemopoietic developme

Lectin histochemistry of developing submandibular glands of fetal Syrian golden hamsters.

Lectin binding was studied in the developing submandibular glands of fetal Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) from gestational day 12 to 16 (the day of birth). The fetuses were fixed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained with nine lectin-horseradish peroxidase conjugates: concanavalin A (Con A), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA), Helix pomatia agglutinin (HPA), Maclura pomifera agglutinin (MPA). Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin I-B4 (GSA I-B4), peanut agglutinin (PNA). Ulex europeus agglutinin I (UEA I) and Limulus polyphemus agglutinin (LPA).

Developing fetal alveolar epithelial cells secrete fluid in primary culture.

The developing pulmonary epithelium secretes a Cl(-)-rich fluid during fetal life by a process involving active transport. To determine if alveolar cells contribute to this fluid production, we studied developing fetal rat alveolar epithelial cells (18-day gestation) in primary culture. Fetal alveolar epithelial cells aggregated to form cystic, alveolar-like structures with a fluid-filled lumen. On light and transmission electron microscopy, the cells were polarized with microvilli facing the lumen. Dexamethasone and triiodothyronine stimulated lamellar body production in many of the epithelia

The development of ependyma in the human fetal brain: an immunohistological and electron microscopic study.

The stratified inner layer of the embryonic fetal brain, the ventricular zone (VZ), contains glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cell bodies of radial glia. The adult cerebral ventricle is lined by a single layer of cuboidal, ciliated common ependymal cells which are, immunohistologically, GFAP negative. In late gestation, the ventricular lining is formed by tanycytes, ependymal cells with short, intensely GFAP-positive basal fibres. The development of ependyma was examined, morphologically and immunohistologically, in human fetal brain from between 11 weeks gestation to 6 months p

Level of termination of the spinal cord during normal and abnormal fetal development.

The level of termination of the spinal cord in 115 autopsies on subjects ranging from a 20-week stillborn to an 8-month-old infant is reported. The study showed that the adult level (lower border L1) is attained at birth. In a clinical study of 10 children with diastematomyelia between the ages of 3 years and 7 years the spinal cord, which was found to terminate in the region of the lower lumbar spine, was tethered by a short thickened filum terminale.

Development of fetal lamb lung and kidney in obstructive uropathy: a preliminary report.

Oligohydramnios, whatever the cause, results in lungs that are 'hypoplastic' or at least smaller than normal. The fine structure in such lungs has not been reported previously. Three fetal lambs had both ureters ligated at 60, 72 and 58 days of gestation. They were sacrificed at 117, 143 and 142 days of gestation. The lungs were fixed by tracheal perfusion at 15 mm Hg. Individual lobar volumes were determined, and the lungs were sampled for electron microscopy. Total lung volumes for 2 of the lambs were very close to those previously reported for lungs of equivalent gestation with diaphragmati

The effect of maternal diabetes on trace element status and fetal development in the rat.

Despite improvements in prenatal care, there is a high incidence of congenital malformations in diabetic pregnancies. Not only is the diabetic patient characterized by a disorder of total fuel metabolism, but abnormal trace element metabolism occurs as well. In the present study, maternal and fetal zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) status has been studied in Sprague-Dawley (SD) and Wistar rats. In addition, the effect of maternal diabetes on fetal development was also investigated. Rats were injected 27 days before mating with streptozocin (STZ…

Effects of prenatal exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fields on development in mice: I. Implantation rate and fetal development.

Pregnant CD1 mice were exposed or sham-exposed from day 0 to day 17 of gestation to a 50 Hz sinusoidal magnetic field at 20 mT (rms). Preimplantation and postimplantation survival were assessed and fetuses examined for the presence of gross external, internal, and skeletal abnormalities. There were no statistically significant field-dependent effects on preimplantation or postimplantation survival, sex ratio, or the incidence of fetuses with internal or skeletal abnormalities. Magnetic field exposure was, however, associated with longer and heavier fetuses at term, with fewer external abnormal

Development and validation of a pregnant phantom with adjustable fetal presentation for region-specific fetal radiation dose assessment during pelvic radiography.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of fetal radiation dose during diagnostic X-ray examinations remains challenging because commercially available pregnancy phantoms do not adequately reproduce fetal anatomy or permit organ-specific dose measurements. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a pregnant phantom with adjustable fetal presentation and to evaluate its anatomical realism and applicability for fetal dose assessment during pelvic radiography. METHODS: The developed phantom comprised an anthropomorphic phantom, a whole-body fetal phantom, acrylic components, and water-filled p

COVID-19-related inflammation of the placenta impedes fetal development in pregnant hamsters.

Pregnant women are at higher risk of severe COVID-19, with vaccine access and hesitancy remaining a challenge. Here, we use a pregnant female hamster model of COVID-19 to explore the effects of maternal infection on pregnancy, revealing a significant increase in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) due to placental inflammation. Viral infection causes bronchopneumonia and weight loss in infected dams, but no vertical transmission occurs. IUGR is instead linked to placental damage, characterized by fibrin deposition, thrombosis, and elevated placental expression of IP10, IL6, and IL10, irresp
