[Familial Mediterranean fever].

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an hereditary disease that especially affects people living around the Mediterranean sea. It is characterized by recurring fever and abdominal pain, eventually associated with localised pleuritis, synovitis or skin inflammation. The most serious complication is amyloidosis, which can lead to terminal renal failure. The attacks and complications can be avoided by life long administration of colchicine. Two independent French and American teams discovered the gene responsible for the disease in 1997. It encodes for a protein named pyrin/marenostrin involved …

Lassa fever vaccine.

Lassa fever remains a serious challenge to public health in West Africa threatening both local residents in rural areas and those who serve them, particularly medical care providers. Given the ecology of the rodent host and conditions in the endemic area, a vaccine is mandatory for control. The challenge is to overcome the scientific, political and economic obstacles to producing a human use vaccine candidate. There are some scientific issues to resolve. It is known that the G-protein confers protection but we do not know its duration. If the N-protein is also included there may be a better du…

Rift Valley fever.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an arthropod-borne viral disease of ruminants, camels and humans. It is also a significant zoonosis which may be encountered as an uncomplicated influenza-like illness, but may also present as a haemorrhagic disease with liver involvement; there may also be ocular or neurological lesions. In animals, RVF may be inapparent in non-pregnant adults, but outbreaks are characterised by the onset of abortions and high neonatal mortality. Jaundice hepatitis and death are seen in older animals. Outbreaks of RVF are associated with persistent heavy rainfall with sustained floo…

[West Nile fever].

West Nile fever is a mosquito-borne febrile illness seen in Africa, Asia, and Europe, but reported in North America only once. West Nile virus is of the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus. Several West Nile fever outbreaks were reported from Israel in the 1950s and in 1980. Since the mid-1990s, frequency and apparent clinical severity of West Nile virus outbreaks have increased. Outbreaks in Rumania (1996), Russia (1999), and Israel (2000) involved hundreds of persons with severe neurologic disease. In the summer of 1999, West Nile virus was recognized in the among Western Hemisphere for th…

Colorado tick fever.

Colorado tick fever, also known as mountain fever and mountain tick fever, is a well-described, viral, tick-borne disease common to the Rocky Mountain region of the United States and Canada. The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, is the primary vector. The triad of high fever, severe myalgia, and headache is typical, but not specific. Although a self-limited disease in most cases, severe complications may occur. PCR techniques have been developed that allow the diagnosis to be established from the first day of symptoms. Ribavirin may merit consideration in the appropriate clinica…

Rift valley fever.

Rift Valley fever virus is an arthropod-borne Phlebovirus endemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Outbreaks also have occurred in Egypt, Madagascar, and most recently in the Arabian peninsula. Large epizootics occur at irregular intervals in seasons of above-average rainfall with persistent flooding and the appearance of large numbers of floodwater-breeding Aedine mosquitoes. The virus is transmitted transovarially and can remain dormant in mosquito eggs during dry interepizootic periods. Low-level virus circulation occurs in high-rainfall forested areas, although individual cases of the disease rarely…

[West Nile fever].

Reviews the data on the history, distribution, ecology, epidemiology, and clinical picture of West Nile (WN) fever and the ecology of the virus (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus, Japanese encephalitis complex). Analyzes the causes of sudden epidemic outbreaks with high mortality in Rumania in 1996, in European Southern Russia, and in New York and its environs in 1999. Offers recommendations on decreasing the damage inflicted by new and emerging infections leading to epidemic emergencies.
