Juvenile ossifying fibroma of the jaw: a retrospective study of 15 cases.

The management of patients with juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) remains controversial. To explore the correlations between different treatments and the patient prognosis, 15 cases of JOF of the jaw were reviewed. Five patients were male and 10 were female. Patient age at the time of disease onset ranged from 7 to 18 years (mean 10.9 years). Nine tumours were located in mandible and six in the maxilla. These cases typically manifested clinically as painless swelling of the jaw (9/15, 60%); 40% (6/15) of the cases were associated with pain, diplopia, stuffy nose, and/or rapid growth. Images of …

Multicentric peripheral ossifying fibroma: A case report and review of the literature.

A peripheral cement-ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion of a reactive rather than a neoplastic nature, whose pathogenesis is uncertain. It predominantly affects adolescents and young adults, with the peak prevalence between 10 and 19 years, especially affecting females (two to four times more). Such lesions are commonly found on the maxillary bone. We hereby present and discuss a unique case of multicentric Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) affecting both the maxillary and the mandibular gingiva in an 11-year-old boy, with a disease duration of two months. This case is probably…

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the calcaneus: two case reports and literature review.

Chondromyxoid fibroma occurs primarily in the long tubular bones of the lower extremity, with the foot representing the second most frequent location after the knee. This benign cartilaginous tumor of bone is currently the rarest reported neoplasm of cartilaginous origin. This mass can mimic other benign and malignant bone tumors owing to its variable histologic features. We report 2 cases of chondromyxoid fibroma of the calcaneus with varying presentations. Initially, advanced imaging studies pointed to a diagnosis of a unicameral bone cyst. Pathologic examination is difficult but can be used…

A huge cemento-ossifying fibroma of paranasal sinus: a case report.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a well-bordered, slow-growing, benign fibro-osseous disease. Although its localization is generally in the mandible, it can be seen in any area of the craniofacial region. Radiology and histopathology help to diagnose the condition. Treatment is based on close observation and/or surgical excision. In this case, we report the case of a 62-year-old male patient who had a large radiological appearance, cemento-ossifying fibroma in the paranasal sinuses.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of maxillary antrum in a young female patient.

The cemento-ossifying fibroma is classified as a fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws. It commonly presents as a progressively growing lesion that can attain an enormous size with resultant deformity if left untreated. The cemento-ossifying fibroma is a central neoplasm of bone as well as periodontium which has caused considerable controversy because of controversy regarding terminology and the criteria for its diagnosis. This case report describes a female patient with cemento-ossifying fibroma involving maxillary antrum. The clinical, radiographic and histological features as well as the surgica…

Proximal plantar fibroma as an etiology of recalcitrant plantar heel pain.

Prompted by repeated pathology reports of fibromas at the origin of the plantar fascia after fasciectomy for chronic plantar heel pain, this study examined the incidence of proximal plantar fibroma. A retrospective study of 100 pathology specimens from 97 patients with the preoperative diagnosis of recalcitrant plantar fasciitis was performed. Patients ranged in age from 36 to 82, and included 31 males and 66 females. The specimens consisted of medial and central bands of the fascia obtained from transverse plantar fasciectomies. The fasciectomies were performed by 4 surgeons between July 1994…

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the nasal septum: case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare bone tumor, accounting for less than 0.5% of all bone tumors, with a predilection for lower extremity bone metaphyses. Involvement of the head and neck is extremely rare, with only 3 cases reported in the nasal septum in world literature. METHODS: This is a case report of a CMF in the nasal septum of a 49-year-old woman with a 6-month history of congestion. MRI showed a bilobed mass originating from the nasal septum. Histologic and immunoperoxidase staining as well as electron microscopic studies were performed. A literature review was perform…

Nonossifying fibroma secondary to aneurysmal bone cyst in the mandibular condyle.

Nonossifying fibromas (NOFs) are benign lesions that unusually occur in the mandible. Nonossifying fibromas are asymptomatic and spontaneous resolution at skeletal maturity. Nonossifying fibromas associated with aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) are very rare. In this clinical report, NOF secondary to ABC in the mandibular condyle was reported; however, it presents different clinical behavior than the usual NOF. In this case, severe destruction in the mandibular condyle as a characteristic of NOF was seen. In the follow-up period, no recurrence was seen subsequent to treatment of lesion with complete…

Giant cell fibroma of the maxillary gingiva in children: a case report.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a giant cell fibroma in the maxillary gingiva of an 11-year-old girl. After excisional biopsy, histological examination showed the presence of numerous giant, multinucleated, stellate-shaped cells dispersed throughout the fibrous tissue of the lamina propria. No recurrence was observed after the 1-year follow-up. Since this lesion is clinically similar to other non-neoplastic lesions and very uncommon in children, establishing a correct diagnosis can be difficult and achieved only based on specific histological characteristics. Thus, it is important tha…

Desmoplastic fibroma of the cervical spine: case report and review of the literature.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report and literature review are presented. OBJECTIVE: To present a rare case of desmoplastic fibroma (DF) in the cervical spine and discuss the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: DF is an extremely rare primary tumor of bone, especially in cervical spine. It is a benign but locally aggressive tumor of the connective tissue. It has a predilection for the mandible and the metadiaphyses of long bones. It has a propensity for local recurrence, especially after intralesional resection. METHODS: We report on a 70-year-old woman with a DF of…

Dislocation of an upper third molar by an ossifying fibroma--case report.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of ossifying fibromas (OFs) in childhood and adolescence has been described in the literature, along with different courses of the disease due to different growth rates. CASE REPORT: In the case of the 15-year-old female patient presented here, an OF resulted in displacement of a maxillary third molar far into the maxillary sinus. It is assumed that the tumour originated coronal to the affected tooth 18. Radiographs document an initial rapid growth of this tumour over a period of 2 years, while its growth almost completely ceased in the next 2 years immediately prio…

Solitary sclerotic fibroma as a rare cause of nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

PURPOSE: To report a case of solitary sclerotic fibroma (SF) as a rare cause of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. METHODS: A 47-year-old female presented with a mass in the right lacrimal sac region that was associated with intermittent watering, pain and itching, and showed delayed fluorescein clearance. CT scan showed a soft tissue density in the lacrimal sac region. The mass was completely excised and on histopathology showed a well-circumscribed fibrous nodule with eosinophilic collagen bundles arranged in an interweaving "plywood" pattern with elongated clefts between them, characteristic o…

Obstruction of the eruption pathway by peripheral odontogenic fibroma: report of a patient.

The diagnostic process and interdisciplinary treatment of a healthy 12-year-old boy with impactions due to a localized peripheral odontogenic fibroma are presented. The treatment consisted of the surgical excision of the peripheral odontogenic fibroma and interceptive orthodontic treatment with an activator appliance to allow the passive eruption of the impacted teeth. Complete orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances was used later to level and coordinate the arches. This report illustrates the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of tooth impactions associated with diffuse gingival…

Xanthomatous changes in case provisionally diagnosed as fibroma: a case report.

Verruciform xanthoma is a hyperplastic lesion of epithelium that is an infrequently diagnosed form of localized gingival enlargement. Clinically, it mimics papilloma, or, sometimes, verrucous carcinoma. Since the latter would require early diagnosis and careful management of the relatively less malignant lesion, differentiating benign verruciform xanthoma from malignant forms of hyperplastic lesions is of paramount importance. This article describes a case of localized hyperplastic gingival enlargement that was provisionally diagnosed as fibroma based on history and clinical presentation but l…
