Chemical priming of hypoxia responses via PLANT CYSTEINE OXIDASE inhibition improves flooding tolerance.

Extreme flooding driven by climate change demands strategies to enhance plant tolerance to low-oxygen stress. We investigated the ability of bioactive compounds to chemically prime plants for flooding events. A high-throughput chemical genetic screen of 2,237 bioactive molecules was performed using an Arabidopsis thaliana luciferase-based reporter line driven by the ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE promoter, a hypoxia-inducible gene involved in anaerobic metabolism. The screen identified chlorquinaldol (CQD), an 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative, as a potent inducer of hypoxia responses. CQD inhibits the act

From drivers to damage: A conceptual framework for integrated flood risk assessment of inland hydrological assets.

Flood risk in inland hydrological systems stems from dynamic interactions among drivers, exposure pathways, and vulnerabilities. Yet, prevailing assessment methods treat these dimensions in isolation, failing to capture cascading and compound effects. This study develops a novel conceptual framework for integrated flood risk assessment that establishes systematic linkages from drivers to damage across inland hydrological environmental assets (IHEAs). The framework structures hazards into five thematic domains, namely sediment dynamics, hydrological forces, pollution and nutrient surges, vegeta

Spatio-temporal dynamics of water quality during and after an extreme flood event in southern Brazil.

In April-May 2024, a compound flood event in southern Brazil produced the highest water levels ever recorded in Porto Alegre, overwhelming urban drainage, sewage, and water treatment infrastructure. This study evaluates the spatiotemporal response of raw water quality in the Guaíba system-the primary drinking-water source for 1.32 million people-during and after this unprecedented event. We conducted seven monitoring campaigns (S1-S7) over one year, from the flood peak (May 2024) to post-event conditions (April 2025), across 22 sampling sites covering six water supply systems. Physicochemical

Elevated invertebrate methylmercury concentrations across functional feeding groups in a eutrophic bog post-flooding.

Mercury is a toxic environmental contaminant that is known to undergo long range transport, resulting in deposition in remote and pristine ecosystems. Increases in methylmercury concentration at low trophic levels may result in greater risk to top predators in food webs. As a result, low trophic level invertebrates are important sentinels for ecosystem contamination and overall ecosystem health. Big Meadow Bog, located on Brier Island, Nova Scotia, is a disturbed wetland habitat that was subject to colonization by herring gulls (Larus argentatus), resulting in significant phosphate nutrient in

A Dose-Response Framework for Ca2+-ROS-Associated Modulation of Aerenchyma Formation Under Flooding Stress.

Flooding stress associated with climate variability requires a better understanding of adaptive plant responses and their regulation in flood-prone systems. This study examines whether dose-dependent modulation of Ca2+/ROS-associated processes influences root porosity and biomass responses in Cynodon dactylon under flooding-related stress. Systematic modulation of Ca2+-ROS-associated processes was examined using CaCl2, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (AT), EGTA, and diphenylene iodonium. The core novelty lies in translating biological signalling into an actionable bioprocess optimisation framework usin

Assessing Flooding from Changes in Extreme Rainfall: Using the Design Rainfall Approach in Hydrologic Modeling.

Quantifying future changes in extreme events and associated flooding is challenging yet fundamental for stormwater managers. Along the U.S. Atlantic Coast, Eastern North Carolina (ENC) is frequently exposed to catastrophic floods from extreme rainfall that is typically associated with tropical cyclones. This study presents a novel approach that uses rainfall data from five dynamically and statistically downscaled (DD and SD) global climate models under two scenarios to visualize a potential future extent of flooding in ENC. Here, we use DD data (at 36-km grid spacing) to compute future changes…

Hydrous mantle plume promoted the generation of continental flood basalts in the Tarim large igneous province.

Recent research on the water content of large igneous provinces (LIPs) has revealed that water has a significant impact on the formation of LIPs. However, most studies focus on the water content of mafic-ultramafic rocks, while relatively little attention has been paid to the water content of continental flood basalts (CFB), which form the major part of LIPs and are characterized by huge volumes (> 1 × 105 km3) and short eruption times. Here, we determined water contents of clinopyroxene crystals from the Akesu diabase, which is co-genetic with flood basalts of the Tarim LIP in China. Based on

The mutual influence of parent-child maladaptive emotion regulation on posttraumatic stress following flood exposure.

Decades of disaster research support the influence parents have on their children's adaptation. Recently, research has shifted to focus on disasters as a whole family experience. Using the actor-partner interdependence model, this study examines maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies in parents and children and how these strategies influence their own and one another's posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The present study includes 485 parent-child dyads who experienced the 2015-2016 Texas floods. The majority of parents identified as mothers (66.3%), with a male child (52.8%) wh…
