This study examined the behavior of six U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds in vegetated soils amended with Class A and Class B biosolids. Short-chain PFAS were evenly distributed throughout the 8-cm soil column, while long-chain PFAS accumulated in the lower layers. Sequential extraction showed that short-chain PFAS dominated the water-leachable fraction, while long-chain PFAS were more concentrated in the methanol-extractable fraction. Plant cultivation appeared to promote the redistribution of long-chain PFAS from the wat

Recent regulations on perfluorinated compounds in drinking water underscore the need for a deeper understanding of the formation of perfluorinated compounds from polyfluoroalkyl substances during chlorine disinfection. Among the compounds investigated in this study, N-(3-(dimethylaminopropan-1-yl)perfluoro-1-hexanesulfonamide (N-AP-FHxSA) underwent rapid transformation during chlorination. Within an hour, it produced quantitative yields of various poly- and per-fluorinated products, including perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA). Sixteen reactions involving chlorine with N-AP-FHxSA and its quaternar

The widespread use and persistence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have raised concerns about their ecological impacts. The relative lack of toxicological data for most current-use PFAS, including short-chain compounds such as perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and precursors such as perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA), is an uncertainty factor in ecological risk assessment. This study investigated the bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity (mortality, light avoidance, and change in soil granulometry as proxy of burrowing behaviour) of PFBS and FBSA in the earthworm species Eisenia fe

While the aerobic transformation of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) has been extensively studied, their fate under anoxic/anaerobic conditions remains poorly characterized. This study investigated the stability and biotransformation of nine emerging polyfluoroalkyl compounds in a composite AFFF under nitrate-, sulfate-, and iron-reducing conditions. The biotransformation behavior of seven compounds under anoxic conditions is reported for the first time. After 300 days of incubation, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate and three compounds contain

Soil samples collected from an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)-impacted sandy soil formation at two depth intervals above the water table were used in bench-scale column experiments to evaluate the release of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) under different degrees of water saturation. Artificial rainwater was applied to the soils under constant and variably saturated conditions. Results from constant saturation experiments suggest that retention of PFAS mass at air-water interfaces was evident in the deep soil (foc < 0.00068 g/g), particularly for longer chain and zwitterionic com

Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), widely employed in surfactants, coatings, plastics, corrosion inhibitors, and fire-extinguishing agents, is less regulated than PFOS or PFOA but displays higher bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. Most toxicity assessments have focused on mammals, fish, and algae, with limited research on ground-dwelling arthropods, especially ants. Here, we examined PFNA's toxic effects on red imported fire ants (RIFAs), a prevalent ground-dwelling species in South China. Stomach and contact toxicity experiments revealed that PFNA significantly reduced RIFA viability, with p

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic contaminants commonly found in drainage water from waste management facilities. Within the European Union, these facilities either treat the water locally or transfer it to wastewater treatment plants to reduce harmful emissions. However, PFAS are a broad class of compounds with varying physicochemical properties, leading to different removal efficiencies for adsorbents. Activated carbon and ion exchange resins are effective but costly, and they can become saturated with other contaminants. Therefore, this study aims to explore inexp

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) porous membrane was prepared by a two-step method of surface gelation-immersion precipitation phase inversion. Chitosan/acetic acid solution and glutaraldehyde aqueous solution were sequentially sprayed onto the surface of the PVDF solution film, with chitosan crosslinking and gelation occurring simultaneously on the film surface. The solution film was then immersed in a coagulation bath to obtain a modified PVDF porous membrane. The effect of the crosslinking time of chitosan and glutaraldehyde on the structure and properties of the PVDF porous membrane was disc

In this study, various crops and farmland soils were collected from the Fen-Wei Plain, China, to investigate the bioavailability of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), their accumulation in edible plant tissues, and the factors impacting their accumulation. PFAS were frequently detected in all of the crops, with total concentrations ranging from 0.61 to 35.8 ng/g. The results of sequential extractions with water, basic methanol, and acidic methanol indicate that water extraction enables to characterize the bioavailability of PFAS in soil to edible plant tissues more accurately, especially for th

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) remain a significant global health burden despite medical advancements. HDP prevalence appears to be rising, leading to increased maternal and fetal complications, mortality, and substantial healthcare costs. The etiology of HDP are complex and multifaceted, influenced by factors like nutrition, obesity, stress, metabolic disorders, and genetics. Emerging evidence suggests environmental pollutants, particularly Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), may contribute to HDP development.
OBJECTIVE: This review integrates epidemiological a

In comparison to other stroke types, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is characterized by an early age of onset and often results in poor prognosis. The inadequate blood flow at the site of the lesion leads to localized oxygen deprivation, increased level of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), and triggers inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, ultimately causing hypoxic brain damage. Despite the potential benefits of oxygen (O2) administration, there is currently a lack of efficient focal site O2 delivery following SAH. Conventional clinical O2 supply methods, such as transnasal oxygenat

In order to overcome silicone oil related problems for biopharmaceuticals, novel container systems are of interest with a focus on the reduction, fixation or complete avoidance of silicone oil in the primary container. Ultimately, silicone oil free (SOF) container systems made from cyclic olefin (co-)polymer or glass combined with the respective silicone-oil free plungers were developed. In the following study we evaluated the potential of a SOF container system based on a glass barrel in combination with a fluoropolymer coated syringe plunger. In a long-term stability study, the system was co

The leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from Australian firefighting training grounds has resulted in extensive contamination of groundwater and nearby farmlands. Humans, farm animals, and wildlife in these areas may have been exposed to complex mixtures of PFASs from aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs). This study aimed to identify PFAS classes in pooled whole blood (n = 4) and serum (n = 4) from cattle exposed to AFFF-impacted groundwater and potentially discover new PFASs in blood. Thirty PFASs were identified at various levels of confidence (levels 1a-5a), including thre
