Behavioral cues that great apes use to forage for hidden food.

We conducted three studies to examine whether the four great ape species (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) are able to use behavioral experimenter-given cues in an object-choice task. In the subsequent experimental conditions subjects were presented with two eggs, one of which contained food and the other did not. In Study 1 the experimenter examined both eggs by smelling or shaking them, but only made a failed attempt to open (via biting) the egg containing food. In a control condition, the experimenter examined and attempted to open both eggs, but in reverse order to control f

Red for "Stop": "Traffic-Light" Nutrition Labels Decrease Unhealthy Food Choices by Increasing Activity and Connectivity in the Frontal Lobe.

Food labels comprise a national health-intervention policy that informs consumers of food-product nutritional value. Previous evidence has indicated that, compared to a purely numeric guideline-daily-amount label, a traffic-light-inspired, color-coded label more effectively conveys the nutritional level and increases the selection of healthier products. Therefore, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess the mechanism whereby traffic-light and guideline-daily-amount labels influence food-related decision-making. Forty-four female dieters (age, mean = 20.0, standard deviation = 1

The effects of FG 7142 on sensory-specific satiety in rats.

Three experiments used intake, clusters, and licks per cluster to study the effects of the GABA inverse agonist, FG 7142, on sensory-specific satiety in rats. In Experiment 1, rats were offered one of two palatable solutions and 30min later tested with the same or the other solution. Rats that received the same solution consumed less, exhibited fewer clusters, fewer licks per cluster and a more rapid decline in rate of licking than rats tested with the other solution. In Experiments 2 and 3, rats tested with the same solution under FG 7142 showed fewer clusters and fewer licks per cluster than

Dietary Preferences and Sarcopenia in Young and Middle-Aged Adults: A Population-Based Correlational Study.

Background/Objectives: Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of muscle strength and mass, is a growing health concern. Identifying modifiable risk factors, such as diet, in early adulthood is crucial for prevention. This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary preference patterns and sarcopenia-related indicators in young and middle-aged adults. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 608 participants (median age: 34.0 years, IQR: 24.0-41.0 years) were included. Dietary preferences were assessed using a validated food preference questionnaire, and dietary preference patterns wer

Observed infant food cue responsivity: Associations with maternal report of infant eating behavior, breastfeeding, and infant weight gain.

Infant obesity and the rate of weight gain during infancy are significant public health concerns, but few studies have examined eating behaviors in infancy. Food cue responsivity has been described as a key contributor to obesity risk in school age children and adults, but has been rarely examined during infancy. The purpose of the current study was to test among 30 infants aged 6-12 months the hypotheses that infants would show greater interest in food versus non-food stimuli, and that greater birth weight, greater rate of weight gain during infancy, greater mother-reported food responsivenes

"Health Is in the Air": Visual and Olfactory Nudges and Food Choices at University Vending Machines.

Background/Objectives: Ambient sensory cues can influence food choice, yet their role in everyday environments remains underexplored, with much of the existing evidence derived from laboratory studies. This is particularly relevant in university settings, where students often make rapid, convenience-driven choices that may be nudged toward healthier options by sensory cues (e.g., images or scents). Methods: A quasi-experimental field study was conducted across three consecutive one-week conditions: control, visual (a nature-themed poster), and olfactory (jasmine fragrance). Snacks were classif

Iron Fortification and Bioavailability of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Seeds and Flour.

Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the most common nutritional disorders, and is mainly due to insufficient intake of bioavailable Fe. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) was examined as a potential vehicle for Fe fortification. Fortificants (FeSO4·7H2O (ferrous sulfate hepta-hydrate), FeSO4·H2O (ferrous sulfate mono-hydrate) and NaFeEDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid iron (iii) sodium salt)) were applied by a spraying and drying method. At 2000 µg g-1 iron fortificant, the fortified split desi seeds (dal), desi flour and kabuli flour supplied 18-19 mg, 16-20 mg and 11-19 mg Fe per 100 g, respectivel

A measure of food seeking in individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), a chromosome 15 genetic disorder, often have a significant preoccupation with food and problem behaviour related to food seeking is often prevalent. METHODS: In the present study, we compared how individuals with PWS responded on a survey regarding the acceptability of food in various locations that varied according to degree of appropriateness for human consumption (e.g. food on a plate, food in a garbage can). For a subgroup of participants, we observed how they actually responded when placed in a room with food items placed in the s

The mixed 5-HT 1A/2A receptor drug FG5938 suppresses alcohol drinking while enhancing feeding in P rats.

The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) has long been implicated in the etiology of aberrant consumption of alcohol. Several compounds thought to possess a potential therapeutic value to counteract drinking have high affinities for 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors in the brain. For example, amperozide and FG5865 significantly reduce the volitional intake of alcohol, without altering food intake, both in rats genetically predisposed or chemically induced to drink alcohol. The present study was undertaken in the alcohol-preferring (P) rat to determine whether an amperozide like drug. FG5938 (1-[4-(p-fl

Comparative intake of white- versus orange-colored maize by Zambian children in the context of promotion of biofortified maize.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency is associated with poor health outcomes related to reproduction, growth, vision, and immunity. Biofortification of staple crops is a novel strategy for combating vitamin A deficiency in high-risk populations where staple food intakes are high. African populations are proposed beneficiaries of maize (Zea mays) biofortified with provitamin A carotenoids, often called "orange maize" because of its distinctive deep yellow-orange kernels. The color facilitates ready recognition but presents a cultural challenge to maize-consuming populations, including those in much

Opioidergic and dopaminergic modulation of cost/benefit decision-making in Long Evans Rats.

Eating disorders are associated with impaired decision-making and dysfunctional reward-related neurochemistry. The present study examined the potential contributions of dopamine and opioid signaling to these processes using two different decision-making tasks. In one task, Long Evans Rats chose between working for a preferred food (high-carbohydrate banana-flavored sucrose pellets) by lever pressing on a progressive-ratio schedule of reinforcement vs. obtaining less preferred laboratory chow that was concurrently available. In a second (effort-free) task, rats chose between the same two reinfo

Different brain regions support deliberation during food choice in disordered and healthy eating.

The brain is wired to drive behavior towards foods that are high in sugar and fat. This natural pattern is reversed in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), who prefer low-sugar and low-fat foods to the point of starvation and even death. Here, we aimed to understand how changes in the brain contribute to the pattern of maladaptive food-related decisions in AN. We combined decision-making tasks with computational modeling of behavior and fMRI to examine food and non food-related decisions in individuals with AN and healthy controls (HC). Results from this pre-registered study suggest that pa

Childhood obesity, sugar, and Early Childhood Caries: the sweet trap.

What drives our irresistible attraction to foods like chocolate, fries, or a warm apple pie? Sugar intake triggers the brain's dopamine system, creating a sense of reward that unconsciously conditions a preference for foods that satisfy cravings. Over time, this weakens attraction to healthier, low-fat and low-sugar foods. This response shares characteristics with addiction, sparking the concept of "food addiction." For early humans, this reward-driven behaviour was advantageous, motivating them to seek high-calorie foods essential for survival when food was scarce. Today, however, it fuels a
