Unraveling the genetic association between obesity-related anthropometric indices and foot deformities in the European population: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Obesity and foot deformities pose substantial public health burdens globally. However, their causal relationship remains uncertain due to confounding and reverse causation in observational studies. This study aimed to investigate causal associations between obesity-related anthropometric indices and foot deformities using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. This two-sample MR study utilized genetic instruments from publicly available genome-wide association studies databases. We extracted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables for obesity (6 SNPs), body mass index …

Structure-aware fatigue modeling in foot deformities: A digital health framework for tissue-specific running injury risk prediction using multi-modal data.

Hallux Valgus (HV) is a common deformity in runners that reflects altered foot morphology and thereby redistributes mechanical loads along the lower limb, possibly increasing injury risk. However, the biomechanical consequences of this deformity on loading at common running injury locations, and the resulting fatigue-failure injury risk remain undocumented. This study integrated gait analysis with subject-specific musculoskeletal modelling to estimate Achilles tendon, plantar fascia, patellofemoral, and tibial loading and probability of fatigue-failure during running at 12 km/h in a cohort of

Rare condition of congenital intermetatarsal coalition with deformity of the fifth metatarsal and symptomatic lesion on the plantar aspect of the foot.

Congenital coalitions are defined as abnormal osseous or fibrocartilaginous bridges between two bones due to failure of embryonic segmentation. In the foot, tarsal bone coalitions are commonly seen, but intermetatarsal coalition is extremely rare and very few cases have been reported in literature to date. We report a case of a unilateral, congenital metatarsal coalition between the fourth and fifth metatarsal bones in a kid in his middle childhood, who presented with unilateral chronic forefoot pain on activity with keratosis under the fifth metatarsal head.A thorough history with clinical ex

Correlation of progressive collapsing foot deformity with varus knee alignment in young adults - A case control study.

BACKGROUND: Majority of patients with Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity(PCFD) have symptoms pertaining to the knee. Malalignment at the foot will have effects on the alignment of the knee. In this case control study, we compare the alignment of the knees between patients with PCFD and controls. MATERIALS: Sixty subjects, 30 PCFD and 30 controls, underwent radiographs in which the tibiofemoral angle and radiological parameters of PCFD were assessed. Parameters of PCFD were correlated with the tibiofemoral angle. RESULTS: Mean tibiofemoral angle was 3.8° among the cases and 4.8° among the

Flatfoot Surgery for Flexible Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity With Inflammatory Joint Diseases: A Report of 3 Cases.

CASE: Three cases of inflammatory joint diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus and ongoing juvenile idiopathic arthritis) with painful flexible progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) underwent flatfoot surgery. All cases maintained sufficient radiological correction and achieved good clinical condition at final follow-up. CONCLUSION: Although the prospect for recurrence of the deformity is not clear, even in inflammatory joint diseases, flat foot surgery such as flexor digitorum longs transfer, spring ligament reconstruction, and lateral column lengthening could have a possibility to be

Medializing Calcaneal Osteotomy for progressive collapsing foot deformity alters the three-dimensional subtalar joint alignment.

BACKGROUND: A medializing calcaneal osteotomy (MCO) is considered as one of the key inframalleolar osteotomies to correct progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD). While many studies were able to determine the post-operative hind- and midfoot alignment, alternations of the subtalar joint alignment remained obscured by superposition on plain radiography. Therefore, we aimed to assess the hind-, midfoot- and subtalar joint alignment pre- compared to post-operatively using 3D weightbearing CT (WBCT) imaging. METHODS: Seventeen patients with a mean age of 42 ± 17 years were retrospectively an

Risk Factors for Failure of Calcaneal Lengthening Osteotomy in Children and Adolescents With Planovalgus Foot Deformity: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The calcaneal lengthening procedure (CLP) is a well-known surgical technique used for the correction of symptomatic planovalgus foot deformities. Literature shows a significant rate of relapse and undercorrection of the foot post-operatively. Factors determining the failure or success of CLP are still not well understood. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the most significant factors related to the failure of this procedure. METHODS: A case-control retrospective study was conducted on 50 patients (80 feet) aged 12.4±2.5 years who underwent CLP. A clinical (de…

Relationship between Foot Width Reduction and Clinical Outcomes after Chevron Osteotomy for Hallux Valgus Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Radiological correction of hallux valgus deformity is the objective of operation and related to successful outcomes. Nonetheless, footwear problems related to foot width can also affect the clinical outcome. Few studies have analyzed changes in foot width, and data on clinical outcomes after correction of hallux valgus deformity are scarce. METHODS: The study included 159 cases with symptomatic hallux valgus deformity who underwent proximal or distal chevron metatarsal osteotomy and were followed up for a mean of 32.8 months. Radiologically, the hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsa

Coverage maps demonstrate 3D Chopart joint subluxation in weightbearing CT of progressive collapsing foot deformity.

A key element of the peritalar subluxation (PTS) seen in progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) occurs through the transverse tarsal joint complex. However, the normal and pathological relations of these joints are not well understood. The objective of this study to compare Chopart articular coverages between PCFD patients and controls using weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT). In this retrospective case control study, 20 patients with PCFD and 20 matched controls were evaluated. Distance and coverage mapping techniques were used to evaluate the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid int

Soft Tissue Management and Tibialis Posterior Tendon Transfer in Acute Correction for Neglected Drop Foot Deformity.

Acute correction of rigid drop foot deformity can be problematic due to the skin defect that may occur in the medial part of the ankle. The purpose of this study is to present an innovative solution for this problem. We hypothesized that acute correction for rigid ankle contractures without arthrosis might be possible if the medial skin defect could be closed. Therefore, we described a surgical technique for acute functional correction of rigid drop foot deformities. The closure of the medial defect was performed by applying a flap and partial-thickness skin graft. We have retrospectively eval…

Changes in the Foot After Two Years of Deformity Correction in Neglected Clubfeet Treated With Modified Ponseti Technique.

Introduction Neglected clubfoot comprises clubfoot deformities with late presentation and weight-bearing on the affected foot. These deformities are stiff and need an aggressive approach for cast-based management. The modified versions of the Ponseti technique have been found effective in treating these deformities. However, these techniques' long-term outcomes in neglected clubfoot and related correction maintenance with time progression have not been investigated. The current study aims to analyze the changes in deformity correction after a minimum of two years of follow-up in neglected club…

Spare the Talonavicular Joint! The Role of Isolated Subtalar Joint Fusion in the Treatment of Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity.

Surgical management of progressive collapsing foot deformity continues to evolve. Previous studies have demonstrated that fusion of the talonavicular joint results in limited hindfoot motion and, therefore, may accelerate adjacent-joint arthrosis. Recent literature has supported using alternative arthrodesis constructs that spare the talonavicular joint, such as naviculocuneiform or isolated subtalar fusions, which may maintain some hindfoot motion through the talonavicular joint yet adequately address a patient's deformity. Concomitant reconstructive procedures may be used in addition to subt
