Estimated age of first exposure to American football and outcome from concussion.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between estimated age at first exposure (eAFE) to American football and clinical measures throughout recovery following concussion. METHODS: Participants were recruited across 30 colleges and universities as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)-Department of Defense Concussion Assessment, Research and Education Consortium. There were 294 NCAA American football players (age 19 ± 1 years) evaluated 24-48 hours following concussion with valid baseline data and 327 (age 19 ± 1 years) evaluated at the time they were asymptomatic with val…

Should you let your child play football? What about soccer or hockey?

College students (n = 120) answered 18 yes-no questions that varied the child's gender (male, female), grade (grade school, high school, college), and sport (football, soccer, hockey). The format of the 18 yes or no questions was "If you had a child in (grade school, high school, college) would you let (him, her) play (football, soccer, hockey)"? Similar to a previous study, a large percentage (78.8%) of the respondents answered yes to the questions about football, indicating that they would permit their children to play football despite the risk of concussion (96% yes for male children, 67% y…

Head impact exposure in youth football-Are current interventions hitting the target?

Restrictions on heading in youth football have been implemented in some countries to limit head impact exposure. However, current interventions remain poorly guided by evidence. Our objective was to quantify heading exposure in youth football, assessing the effects of sex and age. Football matches played during an international youth football tournament with no heading restrictions were directly observed, including players from both sexes (11-19 years). The elite senior level was included for comparison, using video analysis. All heading events were registered, classified, and assigned to indi…

Precooling, Hyperthermia, and Postexercise Cooling Rates in Humans Wearing American Football Uniforms.

CONTEXT: Exertional heatstroke is one of the leading causes of death in American football players. Precooling (PC) with whole-body cold-water immersion (CWI) may prevent severe hyperthermia and, possibly, exertional heatstroke. However, it is unknown how much PC delays severe hyperthermia when participants wear American football uniforms during exercise in the heat. Does PC alter the effectiveness of CWI once participants become hyperthermic or affect perceptual variables during exercise? OBJECTIVES: We asked 3 questions: (1) Does PC affect how quickly participants become hyperthermic during …

Mortality Among Professional American-Style Football Players and Professional American Baseball Players.

IMPORTANCE: Studies of American-style football players have suggested lower overall mortality rates compared with general populations, but with possibly increased neurodegenerative mortality. However, comparisons with general populations can introduce bias. This study compared mortality between US National Football League (NFL) and US Major League Baseball (MLB) players, a more appropriate comparison group of professional athletes. OBJECTIVE: To compare all-cause and cause-specific mortality between NFL and MLB players. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this retrospective cohort study, t…

Motor Function in Former Professional Football Players with History of Multiple Concussions.

The objective of this study was to assess the incidence of motor impairment in former professional Canadian Football League (ex-CFL) players with multiple concussions. We investigated motor symptoms and signs in 45 ex-CFL players with multiple concussions and 25 age- and education-matched healthy controls with no history of concussion. Neurological assessment included items from the SCAT3 (Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 3) and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-Part III). A performance-based measurement of manual motor function was undertaken using the Grooved Pegbo…

Football APP based on smart phone with FES in drop foot rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Long-term, sustained progress is necessary in drop foot rehabilitation. The necessary inconvenient body training movements, the return trips to the hospital and repetitive boring training using functional electrical stimulation (FES) often results in the patient suspending their training. The patient's drop foot rehabilitation will not progress if training is suspended. OBJECTIVE: A fast spread, highly portable drop foot rehabilitation training device based on the smart phone is presented. This device is combined with a self-made football APP and feedback controlled FES. The drop …

Subdural hemorrhage in two high-school football players: post-injury helmet testing.

The incidence of catastrophic head injury in American football is at a 30-year high; over 90% of these injuries are secondary to subdural hemorrhage (SDH). At the present time, it is unknown why the incidence of this devastating injury complex continues to rise. Because previous investigations have documented deficiencies in the process of equipment certification at youth and high-school levels, we sought to investigate the adequacy of headgear worn by two athletes who suffered contact-related SDH on the football field and presented to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital between 2009 and 2011. Helm…

Could targeted exercise programmes prevent lower limb injury in community Australian football?

BACKGROUND: Australian football is a popular sport in Australia, at both the community and elite levels. It is a high-speed contact sport with a higher incidence of medically treated injuries when compared with most other organized sports. Hamstring injuries, ligament injuries to the knee or ankle, hip/groin injuries and tendinopathies are particularly common and often result in considerable time lost from sport. Consequently, the prevention of lower limb injuries is a priority for both community and elite Australian football organizations. There is considerable literature available on exercis…

Sickle cell trait and fatal rhabdomyolysis in football training: a case study.

We report the athletic, the clinical, and the pathological details of a case of fatal rhabdomyolysis during training in a college football player with sickle cell trait (SCT) who collapsed minutes after running 16 successive sprints of 100 yd each. The player, 19 yr old, African American, was apparently healthy when he took the field for the conditioning run. No exertional heat illness was present. After collapsing on-field, the player soon went into coma and developed fulminant rhabdomyolysis, profound lactic acidosis, acute myoglobinuric renal failure, refractory hyperkalemia, and disseminat…
