Minimally invasive approach to cervical intraspinal air gun pellet in a pediatric patient.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a case of a 12-year-old girl who presented for neurosurgical evaluation one month after sustaining a ballisti … nd CT of the neck were obtained. A posterior left-sided C6-C7 minimally invasive tubular hemilamino-foraminotomy was performed. The projectile was successfully retrieved, and the C7 nerve root was decompressed and preserved. OBSERVATIONS: Postoperatively, the patient regained normal strength and function of the left hand and continues to report satisfaction w …

Chronic Ogilvie Syndrome Revealed During Postoperative Rehabilitation.

Ogilvie's syndrome, or acute colonic pseudo-obstruction, is a rare condition characterized by colonic dilation without mechanical obstruction. While often seen acutely in hospitalized or postoperative patients, chronic forms are also possible. We present a case of a 73-year-old male who was admitted to inpatient rehabilitation following a posterolateral fusion at C2-T1 with decompressive cervical laminectomy, facetectomy, and foraminotomies. His medical history included cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), chronic constipation, and prior lumbar and c

BACKGROUND: Degenerative alterations of the cervical spine often entail disc herniations and stenoses of the spinal canal and/or neural fora … include anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), cervical arthroplasty or posterior cervical foraminotomy. Cervical myelopathy may be decompressed by ACDF, corpectomy or posterior approaches like laminectomy plus instrumented fusion or laminoplasty. The outcome depends on the cervical pathology and the type of operation. Overall, in long-term follow-up …

[Lumbar interbody fusion with threaded titanium cages. Results on 222 cases].

Retrospective analysis of 222 cases of degenerative disc disease treated by threaded cage fusion. The objective was to determine the safety … in one patient. Reoperation in the first three months included a cage revision in one patient and a foraminotomy in another. Two osteoporotic women needed an additional posterior fixation for kyphotic deformity. In conclusion, lumbar interbody fusion with threaded titanium cages appears to be efficacious with an acceptable rate of complications. Experience up …

Coexisting cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis: diagnosis and management.

An attempt has been made to identify and manage patients symptomatic from both cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis. The order of operative i … l management included extensive, multiple level laminectomy, unroofing of the lateral recesses, and foraminotomy. Neurolysis and untethering of the spinal cord was essential. Significant improvement was shown by 90% of these patients.

Bilateral laminotomy and discectomy for segmental lumbar disc disease. Decompression with stability.

A type of bilateral laminotomy with discectomy for segmental lumbar discogenic disease is presented. The procedure includes wide bilateral decompressive laminotomies and radical partial discectomies, partial V-ostectomy of the adjacent spinous processes, partial facetectomies of the inferior and superior articular processes, and foraminotomies as indicated. One hundred patients who underwent this procedure were evaluated by an independent examiner in follow-up an average of six years postoperatively. The patients were evaluated by utilizing a scale which included back and leg pain relief, rest

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Adult scoliosis is traditionally treated with long-segment fusion, which provides strong radiographic correction and … ide stability across unstable segments. Decompression can consist of discectomy, laminotomy, and/or foraminotomy, all of which are shown to provide symptomatic relief of neurologic pain. Short-segment fusion has been shown to provide improvements in patient outcomes, albeit with higher rates of adjacent segment disease and concerns for correctional loss. Inter …

Minimally invasive spine surgery in dogs: Evaluation of the safety and feasibility of a thoracolumbar approach to the spinal cord.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the safety and feasibility of a minimally invasive spine surgery technique to access the thoracolumbar vertebral canal in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: Six healthy research dogs. METHODS: Dogs were placed under anesthesia for MRI to evaluate vertebral column and spinal cord integrity. Minimally invasive surgery was performed at multiple sites. Access to the vertebral canal was achieved by means of foraminotomy, discectomy, and lateral minicorpectomy by using minimally invasive access and a surgical microscope. Comparative effectiveness of microdecompression and laminectomy for central lumbar spinal stenosis: study protocol for an observational study.

INTRODUCTION: This observational study is designed to test the equivalence between the clinical effectiveness of microdecompression and laminectomy in the surgical treatment of central lumbar spinal stenosis. Lumbar spinal stenosis is the most frequent indication for spinal surgery in the elderly, and as the oldest segment of the population continues to grow its prevalence is likely to increase. However, data on surgical outcomes are limited. Open or wide decompressive laminectomy, often combined with medial facetectomy and foraminotomy, was formerly the standard treatment. In recent years a g…
