Migrated intra-uterine device to infra-umbilical skin: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: IUDs are effective, reversible and safe methods of contraception. The mechanism of action of IUDs as a group is inducing endometrial atrophy, apoptosis, altering tubal motility; preventing sperm permeability, fertilization, and implantation. Complications of IUD include menstrual disturbance, pelvic pain, and increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with contraceptive failure, device expulsion, uterine perforation or transmural migration with misplacement of the device. Pregnancies and IUD migration are uncommon complications, occurring in 1 to 2 from 1,000 users. The clinical present

Gossypiboma: the hidden surgical threat - delayed diagnosis and management.

Gossypiboma (retained surgical sponge) is a rare, unwanted, avoidable and embarrassing medical event that can complicate the favourable evolution of any surgery. It is a rare but serious complication seldom reported due to its medicolegal implications. Gossypiboma increases the cost of treatment, negatively affects the otherwise good prognosis of the index surgery, and also increases the patient's morbidity and mortality. It can occur after any surgery that requires the use of swabs. Intra-abdominal gossypiboma can migrate into the ileum, stomach, colon or bladder without any apparent opening i

A Case of Retained Catheter Guidewire Discovered Two Years After Central Venous Catheterization.

BACKGROUND Retained guidewire is a recognized complication of intravascular interventions. The majority of cases are identified immediately or shortly after the procedure. In rare cases, the guidewire is identified incidentally by X-ray after the procedure. This report presents a rare case of a retained venous guidewire that was discovered two years after central venous catheterization. CASE REPORT A 52-year-old African-American man presented with a wire that was emerging from the skin near his right knee. He had undergone a right femoral central venous catheter placement two years previously.

Intraluminal migration of surgical sponge: gossypiboma.

Surgical mop retained in the abdominal cavity following surgery is a serious but avoidable complication. The condition may manifest either as an exudative inflammatory reaction with formation of abscess, or aseptically with a fibrotic reaction developing into a mass. Intraluminal migration is relatively rare. We report the case of a 23 year old woman who presented after a previous caesarean section with intestinal obstruction. Plain abdominal radiograph and computed tomography confirmed the presence of gossypiboma. The patient underwent laparatomy and sponge removal. This report discusses the

Silicone granuloma of the face treated with minocycline.

Siliconoma represents a granulomatous foreign body reaction to silicone, which is often used for soft tissue augmentation. Although considered as biologically inert for a long time, silicone has been implicated in various undesirable local and systemic reactions, sometimes with a latency period of up to several decades. Treatment of siliconomas is difficult and granulomas involving the face are a therapeutic challenge. We present a 43-year-old woman with a severely disfiguring facial silicone granuloma who was successfully treated with minocycline.

[Case report: swallowed hearing aid].

An 86-year-old man presented ambulatory with acute dysphagia. Radiologic examination and endoscopy revealed a swallowed postauricular hearing aid. The earmold of the hearing aid became visible in the hypopharynx after mucus and saliva were removed. It could be extracted without effort once the connecting tube was disconnected from the coupling device lodged in the upper esophageal sphincter. The hearing aid itself was impacted in the proximal esophagus and was extracted without any problems. The postoperative phase was uneventful with normal swallowing and discharge. Technical inspection revea

Near-fatal complication of tracheal T-tube use.

Stenosis of the larynx and trachea is an unfortunate sequel to many thermal injuries. Numerous surgical techniques have been developed for correction of such problems, many involving use of a tracheal T-tube. We report a serious complication attributed to the use of such a tube. Factors contributing to this complication are analyzed and methods for avoiding similar near-catastrophes discussed.

Arthroscopy update #2. Arthroscopic removal of femoral intramedullary rod.

A 51-year-old man with a femoral shaft fracture previously treated by open intramedullary rod fixation developed a symptomatic distal migration of the rod. A technique for arthroscopic removal of the femoral rod is described. This report highlights the expanding role of arthroscopy in the treatment of orthopaedic disorders.

Migratory traumatic cardiovascular foreign bodies.

Six cases of cardiovascular foreign bodies secondary to trauma are presented. The various modes of entry and travel within the vascular are reviewed. Routine radiographic examination and angiography are shown to be the most useful techniques in defining the location and subsequent course of the foreign body in the vascular system.

Subclavian artery laceration due to migration of a Hagie pin.

Injuries to subclavian artery are infrequent and usually occur due to gunshot or stab wounds and occasionally by blunt trauma to the chest. An early diagnosis and control of hemorrhage is essential to prevent death which may occur due to exsanguinating hemorrhage. A case of injury to the subclavian artery due to migration of a Hagie pin, which was used to treat the acromioclavicular separation, is reported. The subclavian artery was ligated initially, which produced an ischemic and functionless upper extremity. Revascularization of the arm was successfully accomplished by an axilloaxillary byp

CT findings in seven dogs with perforating wooden skewer foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND: Perforating foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract, such as wooden skewers, are reported in the small animal literature producing inflammatory/infectious lesions in the thorax, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system, which can be life-threatening in some instances. Several imaging modalities have been used, and advanced imaging techniques have shown a great advantage in its diagnosis and pre-surgical planning. AIM: The objective of this study is to describe the computed tomographic findings in a group of seven medium to large breed dogs with perforating wooden skewers and for

Removal of a Fish Bone Completely Embedded in the Cervical Esophageal Wall.

Fish bone is one of the most frequent foreign bodies in the upper aero-digestive tract. When esophageal foreign bodies penetrate outside the lumen or migrate to the extraluminal region, removal through a neck exploration should be considered. We report a rare case of a 68-year-old woman in whom an ingested fish bone became completely lodged in the cervical esophageal wall. First, an esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed, followed by a rigid esophagoscopy under general anesthesia; however, no foreign bodies or abnormalities in the esophageal mucosa were found. Endoscopic ultrasound was perfo

Chronic limb sensory abnormalities caused by retained intraspinal metallic foreign body: a case report.

Intraspinal foreign body retention is a rare clinical entity, usually resulting from trauma, surgery, or invasive procedures, and may lead to progressive neurological dysfunction. We report a patient who presented with burning pain in the right sole and bilateral lower limb weakness, and was diagnosed with a retained metallic foreign body in the thoracic spinal canal by imaging examinations. We discuss the clinical features, imaging diagnosis, and surgical management based on the diagnostic and therapeutic process of this case. This report indicates that invasive therapies such as acupuncture

A 47-Year-Old Woman with Gastric Transmigration of an Intrauterine Contraceptive Device Managed by Laparoscopic Wedge Gastric Resection.

BACKGROUND Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) are commonly used. Although IUCD use is considered safe, one adverse event is uterine perforation and its migration into surrounding organs. Migrations into the urinary bladder and the intestine have been sometimes reported. We here report a very rare case in which an IUCD migrated into the stomach; gastric endoscopy incidentally revealed the IUCD half embedded and half in the gastric lumen. To our knowledge, this is the second report ever of IUCD migration into the stomach. CASE REPORT A 47-year-old woman with BMI 36.2 visited us as a candi
