Long-term trends in abundances of non-native species across biomes, realms, and taxonomic groups in Europe.

Rates of biological invasion have increased over recent centuries and are expected to increase in the future. Whereas increasing rates of non-native species incursions across realms, taxonomic groups, and regions are well-reported, trends in abundances within these contexts have lacked analysis due to a paucity of long-term data at large spatiotemporal scales. These knowledge gaps impede prioritisation of realms, regions, and taxonomic groups for management. We analysed 180 biological time series (median 15 ± 12.8 sampling years) mainly from Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites comprisin

A critical review of operational strategies for the management of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in inland reservoirs.

Occurrences of freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasing on a global scale, largely in part due to increased nutrient input and changing climate patterns. While reservoir management strategies that can influence phytoplankton are known, there is no published guideline or protocol for the management of harmful algal blooms. There is a need to establish what factors are the predominant drivers of blooms, and how common reservoir management strategies specifically influence each factor. The following literature review seeks to establish the benefits and drawbacks of operational manage

A NEW SPECIES OF PNEUMOATRACTIS (COSMOCERCOIDEA: ATRACTIDAE) FROM TWO SPECIES OF FRESHWATER TURTLES FROM THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON.

The monotypic genus PneumoatractisBursey, Reavill, and Greiner, 2009 was erected to allocate nematodes collected from the lungs of the freshwater turtle Podocnemis unifilis Troschel. During a helminthological survey of parasites from freshwater turtles of Tocantins and Xingu rivers, Pará State, eastern Amazon, Brazil, we found nematodes parasitizing the stomach and large intestine of Po. unifilis and Podocnemis expansa Schweigger. We assigned them to a new species of Pneumoatractis, which is described herein. Pneumoatractis gibbonsae n. sp. resembles Pneumoatractis podocnemis by the morphology

Evaluation of growth and antioxidant responses of freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus dimorphus under exposure of moxifloxacin.

As one of the fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics, moxifloxacin (MOX) has been frequently released to the aquatic environment, threatening local organisms. However, researches on its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms are still limited. This study analyzed effects of MOX on the growth, photosynthesis and oxidative stress of two common types of freshwater microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus dimorphus. The 96 h-EC50 values of MOX for C. sorokiniana and S. dimorphus were 28.42 and 26.37 mg/L, respectively. Although variations of specific indicators for photosynthetic fluores

Development of aeration devices and feeding frequencies for oxygen concentration improvement in 60-tones freshwater recirculating aquaculture and biofloc ponds of Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) rearing.

This research aimed to improve the technique to maintain the oxygen content of two freshwater Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) culture systems (recirculating aquaculture system; RAS; and biofloc system; Floc). The dissolved oxygen content was increased by using a blower with flexible rubber hose aerators. For the first study, the effectiveness of oxygenation was investigated. As a result, the aerator and flexible rubber hose are appropriate for increasing oxygen levels in the fish pond. An air pump with a flexible aeration tube (400 W), one set of ejector aerators (250 W), and two sets of eje

Evaluation of three Bacillus spp. isolated from the gut of giant freshwater prawn as potential probiotics against pathogens causing Vibriosis and Aeromonosis.

Pathogens from the Vibrio and Aeromonas genera often cause detrimental effects to the aquaculture sector. Previously, antibiotics was used to resolve the infections, but this caused the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes into the environment. As an approach to address this issue, probiotic bacteria were introduced to improve the hosts' microbiome, disease protection, health condition, growth efficiency, feed consumption, stress response and general vigour. However, reports showed that some commercially available probiotics were restricted to a small number

A study of peatland-derived dissolved organic matter from headstream to sea using multiple analytical tools.

The River Thurso, North Scotland, receives substantial terrestrial deliveries of dissolved organic matter (DOM) leached from Europe's most extensive blanket bogs. The relatively short distance between peatlands and coastal ocean offers potential for research to investigate source-to-sea processing of terrigenous dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Here, we determined DOC concentrations in the bulk (< 0.4 μm), truly dissolved (< 5 kDa), and colloidal fraction (5 kDa - 0.4 μm) as well as DOM absorbance and fluorescence spectra during two river catchment surveys and two corresponding coastal plume su

Bioballs carrying a syntrophic Rhodococcus and Mycolicibacterium consortium for simultaneous sorption and biodegradation of fuel oil in contaminated freshwater.

Nonpathogenic effective bacterial hydrocarbon degraders, Rhodococcus ruber S103, Mycolicibacterium parafortuitum J101 and Mycolicibacterium austroafricanum Y502, were isolated from mixed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-enriched river sediments. They possessed broad substrate specificities toward various PAHs and aliphatic compounds as sole carbon sources. These strains exhibited promising characteristics, including biosurfactant production, high cell hydrophobicity, biofilm formation and no antagonistic interactions, and contained genes encoding hydrocarbon-degrading enzymes. The mixed b

Effects of different roadway deicing salts on host-parasite interactions: The importance of salt type.

The application of roadway deicing salts is increasing the salinity of freshwater systems. Increased salinization from salts, such as NaCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2, can have direct, negative impacts on freshwater organisms at concentrations found in nature. Yet, our understanding of how these salts can indirectly impact freshwater organisms by altering important ecological interactions, such as those between hosts and their parasites, is limited. Using a larval amphibian and infectious free-living helminth (i.e. trematode) model, we examined whether exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations

Heatwave effects on the swimming behaviour of a Mediterranean freshwater fish, the Iberian barbel Luciobarbus bocagei.

Heatwaves, which can be defined as increases of at least 5 °C in air temperature for more than five consecutive days for a specified reference period, are expected to become more frequent under the ongoing climate change, with freshwater organisms being particularly vulnerable to high temperature fluctuations. In Mediterranean-climate areas, depending on the extent of summer droughts and loss of longitudinal connectivity, river segments may become isolated, maintaining fish populations confined to a series of disconnected pools, with no possibility to move to thermal refugia and thus becoming

Mitigating the Expansion of Harmful Algal Blooms Across the Freshwater-to-Marine Continuum.

Anthropogenic nutrient overenrichment, coupled with rising temperatures, and an increasing frequency of extreme hydrologic events (storms and droughts) are accelerating eutrophication and promoting the expansion of harmful algal blooms (HABs) across the freshwater-to-marine continuum. All HABs-with a focus here on cyanobacterial blooms-pose serious consequences for water supplies, fisheries, recreational uses, tourism, and property values. As nutrient loads grow in watersheds, they begin to compound the effects of legacy stores. This has led to a paradigm shift in our understanding of how nutr

Who wins in the weaning process? Juvenile feeding morphology of two freshwater mussel species.

The global decline of freshwater mussels can be partially attributed to their complex life cycle. Their survival from glochidium to adulthood is like a long obstacle race, with juvenile mortality as a key critical point. Mass mortality shortly after entering into a juvenile state has been reported in both wild and captive populations, thus weakening the effective bivalve population. A similar phenomenon occurs during metamorphosis in natural and hatchery populations of juvenile marine bivalves. Based on a morphological analysis using scanning electron microscopy of newly formed juveniles of th

Modeling Key Drivers of Cholera Transmission Dynamics Provides New Perspectives for Parasitology.

Hydroclimatological and anthropogenic factors are key drivers of waterborne disease transmission. Information on human settlements and host mobility on waterways along which pathogens and hosts disperse, and relevant hydroclimatological processes, can be acquired remotely and included in spatially explicit mathematical models of disease transmission. In the case of epidemic cholera, such models allowed the description of complex disease patterns and provided insight into the course of ongoing epidemics. The inclusion of spatial information in models of disease transmission can aid in emergency

Biosynthesis, purification and characterization of polyhydroxybutyrate from Botryococcus braunii kütz.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is completely biodegradable which is metabolised by microorganisms in the soil as their sole food source in few years. The level of PHB up to 10.6% of algal dry weight is of great potential of the eco-friendly nature. Botryococcus braunii is mainly used for the production of biodiesel and is also capable of producing biopolymer polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB). In this study, Botryococcus braunii is used which generally produce PHB to around 20% of the dry weight. Three different microalgae were isolated from the fresh water of Kolavoi lake of Tamil Nadu. Seasonal difference of human adenoviruses in a subtropical river basin based on 1-year monthly survey.

In this study, the seasonal difference and the observable presence/absence of human adenovirus (HAdV) in the Puzih River basin in Taiwan was investigated. A total of 288 water samples were collected from 24 sites from March 2014 to February 2015. Human AdV analysis of sample was subjected to viral concentration using a GN-6 Metricel® filter, followed by DNA extraction, nested-PCR, and qPCR. Human AdV was detected in 34.3 % (99/288) of the entire river water sample. A higher percentage of HAdV (76.4 %) was obtained during the winter. The HAdV median concentration was relatively high in fall (1.
