In craniofacial surgery, a wide spectrum of pathological conditions are usually treated. The aetiology of these could be congenital, traumatic, infective, post-tumor resection, postradiation, autoimmune, iatrogenic, or other miscellaneous conditions. The surgical approach for the procedures is usually via a coronal incision. In a large proportion of the patients, the frontal bone is removed to obtain intracranial access. The frontal bone is then replaced either in its original form or in a remodeled state. In congenital conditions the supraorbital bar and frontal bone is often also removed, re

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anatomical interaction between uncinate process and agger nasi cell to better understand the anatomy of the frontal sinus drainage pathway by endoscopy, spiral computed tomography (CT) and sectioning.
METHODS: Twenty-one skeletal skulls (forty-two sides) and one cadaver head (two sides) were studied by spiral CT together with endoscopy and collodion embedded thin sectioning at coronal plane. The sections with the thickness of 100 microm were stained with hemotoxylin and eosin.
RESULTS: Under endoscopy, a leaflet of bone to the middle turbinate, which is given of

INTRODUCTION: Shunt-related craniosynostosis causing craniocerebral disproportion represents a particular complication of the treatment of hydrocephalus. When the modification of the shunt opening pressure does not improve the symptomatology, surgery for correction of craniocerebral disproportion is indicated. We present the results and advantages of the split bi-frontal bone technique that is a modification of the previous used frontal bone advancement technique.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 5 patients with iatrogenic craniosynostosis treated in our institution from 1995

Although intranasal frontal sinusotomy can now be performed for most cases of chronic frontal sinusitis, the osteoplastic frontal sinus procedure with obliteration, unfortunately, still is considered by many to be the standard for chronic frontal sinusitis against that which other frontal sinus procedures are judged. Unobliterating the previously obliterated sinus is indicated for patients with evidence of frontal sinus pathology on CT or MR images and for patients with chronic symptoms with equivocal radiologic results. The reopened frontal sinus can be reventilated and remucosalized, or reob

INTRODUCTION: The extent of bone exposure is one of the major factors contributing to failure of endoscopic frontal sinusotomy procedures. Double flaps providing cover of exposed bone have already been described for Draf III procedures in a cadavre study using posterior and lateral pedicled nasoseptal flaps. As these flaps overlap on the septal side, they cannot be raised from the same nasal cavity in a Draf IIb procedure. We describe a new technique using 2 local mucoperiosteal flaps raised from the same side to entirely cover the bone margins exposed by Draf IIb frontal sinusotomy.

Mucocoele of the frontal sinus presents with initial sign of forehead swelling in about 10% of cases, and cases with huge intracranial extension have been reported to be rare. We present a case of a giant frontal sinus mucocoele with intra-cranial and intra-orbital extensions exerting a mass effect on the anterior cranial fossa in a 78 year old Nigerian female with resultant forehead swelling, proptosis and total blindness of the left eye. Diagnosis was made on clinical and radiological basis, and enucleation using coronal flap approach was done. Immediate repair of the resultant frontal bone

The authors present the embryology and comparative anatomy of the frontal sinuses pertinent to a discussion of the systemic factors which influence frontal sinus pneumatization. There are at least three important factors involved: 1) craniofacial configuration, 2) thickness of the frontal bone, 3) growth hormones. Various clinical entities which illustrate these points are discussed.

The materials ordinarily used to reconstruct bone defects in the calvaria and facial bones either are difficult to shape, are partially resorbed by the body, or are likely to become infected if used near a contaminated area such as the frontal sinus. Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (plaster of Paris) has been known for years to have excellent reparative qualities in bone defects, but ordinarily it is quickly resorbed. Consequently, a new material, a composite of a dense form of plaster of Paris and hydroxylapatite, was devised to provide nonabsorbable hydroxylapatite particles for bone to form aro

OBJECTIVE: This study presents the clinical characteristics, imaging manifestations, and surgical experience in 38 patients diagnosed with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia in fronto-orbital region (foFD).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data from 38 patients who had surgery for foFD. The surgical procedure typically involved extensive tumor removal, followed by immediate reconstruction of the frontal bone and orbit using synthetic materials. Additionally, 9 patients underwent simultaneous microscopic decompression of the optic canal.
RESULTS: Common clinical manifestations in

The ethmoid bone undergoes significant changes in the course of life. The critical period is the time from 9 to 35 years of age. The changes in its shape depend upon the intensity of pneumatization of the ethmoid labyrinth and frontal sinus. If pneumatization of the labyrinth is excessive, the ethmoidal cells are not covered by the frontal bone. On the contrary, they are incorporated in the inferior floor of the anterior cranial fossa, resulting in a possible risk of penetration during surgical ethmoidectomy.

To compare the radiographic and computed tomographic (CT) findings and to evaluate the sensitivity of radiography and CT for diagnosis of nasal aspergillosis in dogs, the radiographic and CT studies of 48 dogs with chronic nasal disease were reviewed separately. The radiographic and CT findings were recorded, and a diagnosis was made. The results obtained in the dogs with nasal aspergillosis (n = 25) were used. Based on definite aspergillosis as diagnosis, CT had a sensitivity of 88% and radiography of 72%. Considering definite and probable aspergillosis as equivalent, CT had a sensitivity of

BACKGROUND: Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare and potentially deadly complication of frontal sinusitis consisting of subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with fever and soft tissue swelling of the forehead. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) depicted an abscess in the subcutaneous tissue frontally and an epidural empyema, while a cranial computed tomography (CT) scan revealed bone erosion as a sign of osteomyelitis. The patient was treated accordingly.
CONCLUSIONS: This rare condition is essential

This study was designed to investigate the differences between single-stage and gradual advancement of cranial vault in adult cats. Fifteen animals underwent fronto-parietal craniotomy including the roof of the frontal sinus. They were randomly assigned to three experimental groups; single-stage advancement (n = 5), gradual distraction with intact dura-bone attachments (n = 5), and gradual distraction after separation of the dura from the fronto-parietal bone segment (n = 5). Development of an extradural dead space and new bone formation were evaluated with CT scans at 1, 4 and 12 weeks. After

The possibilities and limitations of conventional radiography and CT in detecting maxillo-facial fractures are shown both experimentally and in a clinical setting. In 36 patients examined by both methods after maxillo-facial trauma, CT and conventional radiography (including pluridirectional tomography) proved to be equal in detecting fractures of the orbital roof, the anterior wall of the frontal sinus, the nasal bone and the pterygoid process. CT is inferior to conventional radiography in fracture of the orbital floor, the frontal base of the skull, the hard plate and the zygomatic arch. CT

This study aimed to evaluate extensive cranioplasty involving the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal bones without removing the floating bone flaps in the treatment of sagittal synostosis. Sixty-three children with sagittal synostosis, aged 5 months to 3 years, were included in the study. The frontal bone flap was removed using an air drill. The occipital and bilateral temporal bone flaps were cut open but not detached from the dura mater or fixed to produce floating bone flaps. The skull bone was cut into palisade-like structures. Brain compression from both sides and the base of the

Frontal sinus has complex anatomy and is the most difficult sinus to dissect under the nasal endoscope. In case of difficult accessibility through the frontal recess, we can make a detour to more invasive and external procedures to treat chronic or intractable frontal sinus diseases. However, these approaches usually need advanced surgical skills and sometimes can result in minor and/or major complications. Therefore, we developed a new surgical technique to treat frontal mucocele in a patient with severe new bone formation at the frontal recess and presented our experiences with literature re
