Could concurrent biopsy and microwave ablation be reliable? Concordance between frozen section examination and final pathology in CT-guided biopsy of lung cancer.

PURPOSE: Microwave ablation combined with concurrent biopsy has been used for lung cancer. Frozen section (FS) diagnosis is an important supplement for the final pathology (FP). Thus, a retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the concordance between FS examination and FP in the computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy of lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent percutaneous transthoracic needle lung biopsies and were diagnosed using both intraoperative FS examination and FP were retrospectively enrolled. Concordance between FS findings and FP in the diagnosis of malignan

Frozen Section for Detection of Lymph Nodes After Cervical Injection with Indocyanine Green (ICG) for Sentinel Lymph Node Technique in Endometrial Cancer Staging.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the role of frozen section (FS) in identifying an absence of lymph nodes during sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy for apparent early-stage endometrial cancer (EC). METHODS: Consecutive apparent early-stage EC patients who had SLNs removed after cervical injection with indocyanine green (ICG) from 1 June 2014 to 30 June 2016 were analyzed. An empty node (EN) was defined as an SLN specimen without evidence of lymph node(s). The association of tumor and patient characteristics with an EN was evaluated, and trend analysis to compare the rate of ENs ov

Frozen section analysis of SLNs in trunk and extremity melanoma has a high false negative rate but can spare some patients a second operation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of frozen section (FS) analysis of sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) in melanoma. METHODS: Five hundred seventy-one patients underwent FS analysis of SLN between 1/2000 and12/2010. Surgical and pathological characteristics, recurrence, and survival were analyzed. Comparisons were made using χ2 and Fisher's exact t-test. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-three (23%) patients were SLN positive of which 63 (47.4%) were identified on FS. 16/70 SLN metastases not identified on FS (23%) were seen only on immunohistochemistry. FS analysis detect

Impact of axillary ultrasound and core needle biopsy on the utility of intraoperative frozen section analysis and treatment decision making in women with invasive breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to evaluate the impact of preoperative axillary ultrasound and core needle biopsy (CNB) on breast cancer treatment decision making. A secondary aim was to evaluate the impact on the utility of intraoperative sentinel lymph node (SLN) frozen section. METHODS: A review of 84 patients with clinically negative axilla who underwent axillary ultrasound was performed. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive/negative predictive value for axillary ultrasound with CNB was calculated. RESULTS: Thirty-one (37%) had suspicious nodes. Of 27 amenable to CNB, 12 (14%) were malig

The impact of routine frozen section analysis during nephroureterectomy or segmental ureterectomy for urothelial carcinoma on final surgical margin status and long-term oncologic outcome.

OBJECTIVE: The utility of intraoperative frozen section analysis (FSA) at the surgical margins (SMs) in patients with upper urinary tract cancer has not been established. We herein assessed the clinical significance of routine FSA of ureteral SMs during nephroureterectomy (NU) or segmental ureterectomy (SU). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of our Surgical Pathology database identified consecutive patients undergoing NU (n=246) or SU (n=42) for urothelial carcinoma from 2004 to 2018. FSA (n=54) was correlated with the diagnosis of frozen section controls, the status of final SMs,

Association of Intraoperative Frozen Section Controls With Improved Margin Assessment During Transoral Robotic Surgery for Human Papillomavirus-Positive Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

IMPORTANCE: Intraoperative margin assessment is an important technique for ensuring complete tumor resection in malignant cancers. However, in patients undergoing transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal carcinomas, tissue artifact may provide pathologic uncertainty. OBJECTIVE: To assess the benefit of providing frozen section control samples ("positive tumor biopsies") for use during intraoperative margin assessment for patients undergoing TORS for human papillomavirus (HPV)-16-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohor

Multiple Myeloma Presenting as Massive Amyloid Deposition in a Parathyroid Gland Associated with Amyloid Goiter: A Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Mimic on Intra-operative Frozen Section.

Clinical examples of amyloid deposition in parathyroid glands are exceedingly rare and usually present as an incidental finding in a patient with amyloid goiter. Here, we present the first histologically documented case of parathyroid amyloid deposition that presented as a mass. The patient did not have hyperparathyroidism. The parathyroid gland was submitted for intra-operative frozen section and concern for medullary thyroid carcinoma was raised. An important histologic clue arguing against medullary thyroid carcinoma was the evenly dispersed nature of the amyloid. Histologic perinuclear cle

Comparison of intraoperative frozen section analysis of sentinel node with preoperative positron emission tomography in the diagnosis of axillary lymph node status in breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Although axillary lymph node status is an important prognostic factor and axillary dissection is regarded as the gold standard for staging, it requires radical surgery which is accompanied by considerable postoperative problems such as lymphedema. This study was carried out to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative positron emission tomography (PET) and intraoperative frozen biopsy of sentinel lymphadenectomy (SLND) in detecting axillary lymph node metastasis. METHODS: We studied 18 patients who had preoperative PET and SLND for breast cancer in the Department of Surgery

Excellent Prognosis of Patients With Invasive Lung Adenocarcinomas During Surgery Misdiagnosed as Atypical Adenomatous Hyperplasia, Adenocarcinoma In Situ, or Minimally Invasive Adenocarcinoma by Frozen Section.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study revealed that intraoperative frozen section (FS) analysis could differentiate invasive lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) accurately from preinvasive lesions. However, few articles have analyzed the clinical impact of FS errors such as underestimation of invasive adenocarcinomas (IACs), and whether complementary therapy is needed remains controversial. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the prognosis of patients undergoing limited resection for invasive LUAD misdiagnosed as atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH), adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), or minimally invasive adenocarcinom

Impact of analysis of frozen-section margin on reoperation rates in women undergoing lumpectomy for breast cancer: evaluation of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data.

BACKGROUND: Reoperation for positive margins after lumpectomy for breast cancer is common. Intraoperative analysis of frozen-section (FS) margins permits immediate re-excision, avoiding reoperation. The aim of this study was to compare reoperation rates between an institution using routine FS analysis of all margins and the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) data. METHODS: We designed a retrospective cohort analysis comparing the NSQIP data from a FS single institution with the national NSQIP data from 2006 to 2010. Women undergoing lumpectomy for cancer were identified (N
