Detection of Solanum betaceum Cav fruit maturity using YOLO11-based deep learning.

The tree tomato (Solanum betaceum Cav.) is a Solanaceae fruit native to South America with nutritional, functional, and economic value. However, assessing fruit maturity and making harvest-related decisions continue to rely primarily on manual visual inspection, which can be subjective and inconsistent under field conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of YOLO11-based object detection models for the automatic detection of the ripeness of Solanum betaceum fruits in a real-world agricultural setting. To this end, a dataset of 200 images captured with smartphones …

HY5 Positively Regulates Autophagy to Mediate Red Light-Induced Tomato Fruit Ripening.

Red light accelerates tomato fruit ripening, but the molecular link between light signalling and autophagy remains unclear. Here, we show that red light promotes fruit coloration by activating autophagy in tomato pericarp. This response largely depends on the transcription factor HY5, which positively regulates this process by directly activating ATG10 expression. ATG10 overexpression rescues the autophagic activity and the delayed coloration of hy5 mutants. Thus, the HY5-ATG10 module links red light to autophagy and fruit maturation, suggesting a target for improving fruit colour.

Electrostatic treatment enhances pollen viability and improves fruit quality in 'Xuxiang' kiwifruit.

Electrostatic treatment holds promise for enhancing pollen and seed viability, as well as improving crop quality. However, there are limited reports regarding the effects of electrostatically treated pollen on pollination and fruit quality in plants. In this study, an electrostatic pollination platform was established, treated pollen was used to pollinate the kiwifruit cultivar (Actinidia deliciosa cv. 'Xuxiang'), and in vitro germination experiments were conducted. In field experiment, style samples were collected every 0.5 hours over a continuous period of 20 hours, and pollen tube behavior …

Characterization and encapsulation properties of pectic polysaccharides derived from Choerospondias axillaris fruit.

The fruit of Choerospondias axillaris is commonly used in the food industry for producing candies and cakes. However, limited research on polysaccharides from C. axillaris fruit has restricted their application. In this study, a homogeneous pectic polysaccharide of 22.4 kDa, designated as CAP-3, was isolated from C. axillaris fruit. Structural characterization revealed that CAP-3 exhibited a backbone composed of consecutive 1,4-α-GalpA residues and alternating disaccharide units of 1,2-α-Rhap and 1,4-α-GalpA, with DM of 8.4% and DA of 0.05%. The side chains consisted of 1,6-β-Galp and 1,5-α-Ar…

Dynamic epigenetic and transcriptional regulatory network in pepper fruit development and ripening.

Pepper (Capsicum) is among the most widely cultivated and consumed vegetable crops worldwide. Although studies in model fruit crops such as tomato have provided insights into the genetic and epigenetic regulation of fruit development and ripening, comparable knowledge in pepper remains limited. Here, we employ a multiomics approach to investigate transcriptome and epigenome dynamics during pepper fruit pericarp development and ripening. Our analyses reveal coordinated changes in epigenetic modifications accompanying transcriptome reprogramming. Changes in H3K27ac are closely associated with ch…

Geographic Structuring of the Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus Populations in Morocco.

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (Tobamovirus fructirugosum, ToBRFV) is an emerging virus that affects tomatoes, capsicum, and chili. Since its first detection in Jordan in 2015, the virus has been reported in more than 40 countries across all the continents. In Morocco, the virus was reported for the first time in October 2021. However, its genetic diversity remains unexplored. In this work, we used a collection of 100 tomato fruits from local markets to investigate the virus's variability. Thirty-eight sequences were recovered and used to study evolutionary pressures acting on the N-terminus …

Examining Demographic Variables Associated with Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Skin Yellowness.

Background/Objectives: Skin yellowness measured using reflectance spectroscopy can be used as a proxy for 'skin carotenoid' concentration and as a valid estimate of fruit and vegetable intake. However, the association between different ethnic backgrounds, age, sex and self-reported skin colour on skin yellowness is yet to be explored. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study used a convenience sample to assess the relationship between skin yellowness (b*), measured using skin reflectance spectroscopy, and fruit and vegetable intakes across different age groups, sex, self-reported Caucas…

Nitric oxide and phytohormones molecular crosstalk regulating fruit quality and postharvest management.

Nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as a pivotal signaling molecule regulating postharvest fruit physiology, functioning far beyond its early recognition as a simple reactive nitrogen species. Increasing evidence highlights NO as a central signaling hub that integrates redox homeostasis, hormone signaling, transcriptional control, and post-translational regulation to modulate fruit ripening, senescence, and stress responses, and enhance disease resistance during postharvest storage. At the molecular level, NO participates in complex crosstalk with reactive oxygen species, reactive sulfur species, an…

Integrative genetic and hormonal coordination of endocarp/stone development in drupe fruit.

The hardened endocarp/stone is a defining feature of drupe fruits and is essential for seed protection, yet it poses significant challenges for fruit processing. Stone development is not an isolated process; rather, it is closely coordinated with seed and fruit growth through complex hormonal and genetic signaling networks. This review synthesizes advances in elucidating how these networks guide the developmental trajectory from early cellular specification in the ovary to lignification and programmed cell death (PCD). Following fertilization, a conserved transcriptional cascade is initiated i…

Fruit Damage Alters Headspace Volatile Chemistry and Host Attraction in Drosophila suzukii.

Spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a destructive pest of ripening berries and stone fruits. D. suzukii is attracted to ripening fruit volatiles, allowing it to occupy a distinct ecological niche from other Drosophila species. Ripening fruit volatiles act as relatively specific cues, which can be leveraged for pest management. Here, we tested whether volatiles from damaged host fruit serve as attractive adult host-finding cues. Using multivariate analysis, we characterized the headspace of mechanically damaged or undamaged blueberries and strawberries, find…

Fruit pit mimicking gallstone ileus: A diagnostic pitfall on CT-Case report.

Small bowel obstruction due to ingested fruit pits is rare and often underrecognized. In exceptional cases, these foreign bodies may mimic the clinical and imaging features of gallstone ileus, a complication of cholelithiasis involving biliary-enteric fistula formation and gallstone migration into the intestinal lumen. Such presentations may lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate management. This case highlights an uncommon but clinically relevant diagnostic pitfall: a pseudo-gallstone ileus caused by an impacted apricot pit in a patient with a prior ileocolic anastomosis. An Italian Caucasian…

An Importin Protein SlIMPA3 Interacts with SlLCD1 and Regulates Tomato Fruit Ripening.

A nuclear-localized cysteine desulfhydrase, LCD1, plays a crucial role in mediating endogenous hydrogen sulfide production in tomatoes. However, the mechanism underlying the nuclear localization of SlLCD1 is not yet fully understood. In this study, it was found that SlLCD1 specifically interacted with nuclear import receptor importin α3 (SlIMPA3). Furthermore, it was demonstrated that silencing SlIMPA3 through virus-induced gene silencing or introducing mutations in SlIMPA3 via CRISPR/Cas9 significantly accelerated fruit ripening. Moreover, enhanced chlorophyll degradation, carotenoid accumula…

100% Fruit Juice Intake, Glucose Profile, and Uric Acid: A Systematic Review.

Several studies suggest a favorable effect of 100% fruit juice (100%FJ) on cardio-metabolic risk. However, international dietary guidelines disagree on recommendations regarding fruit drink consumption, and the published European Food Safety Authority draft, based only on epidemiological data, suggested a direct relationship between 100%FJ intake and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gout. Thus, we performed a systematic review of both randomized controlled trials (RCT) and prospective studies that assessed the relationship between 100%FJ intake, uric acid metabolism, and …

Anti-Aging Properties of Chitosan-Based Hydrogels Rich in Bilberry Fruit Extract.

Photoaging is a process related to an increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Polyphenols can scavenge free radicals in the body, which can delay skin aging. Therefore, our work aimed to prepare a biologically active extract from dry fruits of Vaccinium myrtillus or Vaccinium corymbosum and use it for the preparation of hydrogels for topical application. Therefore, eight different extracts (using V. myrtillus and V. corymbosum and different extraction mixtures: methanol, methanol-water 1:1, water, acetone-water 1:1) were prepared and their phytochemical (total polyphenolic content, t…
