Gait analysis and pedobarography were done on 58 surgically corrected clubfeet in 40 children. The average age of patients at the time of surgery was 6.7 months. The average age of the children at the time of the gait analysis was 6.1 years. Twenty-two children (32 feet) were 5 years old and younger. Eighteen children (26 feet) were older than 5 years old. Cadence, velocity, duration of single-limb stance, step length, and ground reaction force measurements were not significantly different from normal children. Differences noted in clubfeet were: 1) duration of single-limb stance among bilater…

The role of cutaneous sensation during gait is controversial. Hence this double-blind study investigated the effect of partial foot anaesthesia on gait velocity. Twenty healthy female subjects were randomly allocated to treatment or control groups. Velocity was determined from three walking trials over a compliant foam walkway. Eutectic Mixture of Local Anaesthetics (EMLA) or Vitamin E Cream was applied to the undersurface of the feet of subjects in treatment or control groups respectively. All subjects rested in sitting for 60 minutes and gait was reassessed. Mean velocity significantly decre…

Skipping, a gait children display when they are about four- to five-years-old, is revealed to be more than a behavioural peculiarity. By means of metabolic and biomechanical measurements at several speeds, the relevance of skipping is shown to extend from links between bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion (namely galloping) to understanding why it could be a gait of choice in low-gravity conditions, and to some aspects of locomotion evolution (ground reaction forces of skipping seem to originate from pushing the walking gait to unnaturally high speeds). When the time-courses of mechanical energy…

This article will review those electrophysiological investigations which have addressed the neuronal mechanisms underlying impaired gait. The aims of the review are to provide further insights to the underlying pathophysiology of impaired gait and also towards the selection of an appropriate treatment. From the patients' point of view the first indication of a central motor system lesion is an impairment of movement, most notably locomotion. These symptoms are characteristic in cases of spasticity, cerebellar lesion or Parkinson's disease. Clinical examination reveals typical changes in tendon…

Until now the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of vascular parkinsonism (VP) have been disputed. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether quantitative gait analysis can differentiate between the gait pattern of patients with VP and the gait pattern of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). Twelve patients with VP, 12 patients with PD, and 10 neurologically nondiseased controls were examined by quantitative gait analysis. Patients with VP, having a similar gait velocity and stride length, showed relatively preserved arm swing with markedly more anteflexion in th…

Analysis of gait in patients with acute unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders was performed using foot switches and electromyography, with the aid of a telemetry system. Among the eight parameters set for the analysis, the occurrence rate of abnormality in the coefficient of variation (CV) was the highest (78%) for the time from heel strike to forefoot strike, followed by that of the location of maximum monophasic contraction of the gastrocnemius during stance, swing and stance. No significant laterality concerning the abnormally increased CV value in those parameters was found except for…

The characteristics of acute deterioration in truncal movements, posture and gait were studied in patients admitted with acute non-neurological disease. Reversible gait abnormalities with characteristics of a 'lower-half parkinsonism' were associated with a disorder of axial movement, disability (as assessed by an activities of daily living score), and low mental test score. There was no association of gait dysfunction with tests of upper limb apraxia. An 'at risk' sub-group of elderly patients was identified who during an acute illness lose their walking independence, of whom some also have g…

The purpose of the study was to evaluate objectively and quantitatively the possible effects of surgical correction for equinus deformity on the gait of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Evaluation criteria selected were based on time and distance parameters of stride during gait. Ten children with confirmed diagnoses of CP took part in the study. They were tested before surgery and after surgery at four-month intervals for a period of up to one year. Results were compared to published data obtained on able-bodied, growing children to determine whether progress after the operation was faster …

The purpose of this descriptive study was to quantify the work that is accomplished by major muscle groups of the affected limb of 10 children with spastic hemiplegia secondary to cerebral palsy during walking. Cinematographic film and force-plate data were used in a biomechanical link-segment model to calculate the positive and negative work performed by the muscles around each joint. The results revealed that the ankle plantar flexors produced just over a third of the positive work for the affected limb instead of the normal two thirds. The greatest proportion of positive work was performed

An automated system designed and developed at this laboratory was used to measure spasticity in the thigh musculature of fifteen patients with hemiplegia. In addition, each subject was timed during a gait trial over a measured distance at maximum speed. Analysis of the data revealed no statistically significant correlation between spasticity in the thigh musculature and the gait speed of the subjects studied. Factors which may have contributed to the findings are mentioned.

Translation gain is a key Redirected Walking (RDW) technique in Virtual Reality (VR) that enables users to navigate virtual environments (VEs) larger than the available physical space. The technique was originally developed to scale users' walking distance in the VE and is typically applied continuously, regardless of the user's motion state. We introduce Gait-Synced Translation Gain (GSTG), a novel approach that adapts translation gain by synchronizing it with the user's gait cycle. GSTG leverages the single-limb support phase of walking-when users are less stable and thus less sensitive to e…

Gait is a highly coordinated motor behavior that integrates musculoskeletal and neuromotor control. Analysis of gait parameters is widely used in murine studies as functional biomarkers of locomotor development and disease progression. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive characterization of how gait matures during the rapid growth preceding skeletal maturity, an age range often used in preclinical gait studies. We analyzed gait longitudinally in healthy C57BL/6J mice from 6 to 16 weeks of age, timed to the onsets of sexual and skeletal maturity, respectively. More than 30 gait paramet…

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor dysfunction and complex gait abnormalities. Traditional linear methods often fail to capture the intricate movement patterns in PD. This review highlights Multiscale Entropy (MSE) as a promising tool for assessing gait dynamics, offering deeper insights into movement variability across multiple temporal scales. MSE distinguishes healthy and pathological gait patterns, enhancing early diagnosis and disease monitoring. Advances in wearable sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have boosted MSE's…

This study aimed to integrate deeplabcut (dlc) with our Automatic Gait Analysis Through Hues and Areas (AGATHA) algorithm. Prior work with AGATHA shows that it can be used to understand spatiotemporal gait adaptations in multiple disease models. However, AGATHA cannot detect kinematic variables, like joint angles, which dlc was designed to measure. Here, these two approaches are integrated, and the gait variables that can be achieved with both methods are compared. To train dlc, hand digitization of high-speed videos was conducted to estimate the location of several key anatomical markers; the…

Detection of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and grading of these diseases' severity have high clinical significance. These tasks based on walking analysis stand out compared to other methods due to their simplicity and non-invasiveness. This study has emerged to realize an artificial intelligence-based disease detection and severity prediction system for neurodegenerative diseases using gait features obtained from gait signals. For the detection of the disease, the problem is divided into parts which are subgroups of…

BACKGROUND: It is known that cochlear implantation may alter the inner ear and induce vestibular disorders.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does cochlear implantation influence gait stability? Material and Methods. An experimental group of twenty-one subjects scheduled for cochlear implantation underwent gait testing twice, on the day before cochlear implantation (BCI) and three months after cochlear implantation (ACI), using a motion capture system. A control group of 30 age-matched healthy individuals were also tested.
RESULTS: In the experimental group, the gait stability ratio (GSR) was found to …

OBJECTIVE: To examine hip contact force (HCF), calculated through multibody modelling, in a large total hip replacement (THR) cohort stratified by patient characteristics such as body mass index (BMI), age and function.
METHOD: 132 THR patients undertook one motion capture session of gait analysis at a self-selected walking speed. HCFs were then calculated using the AnyBody Modelling System. Patients were stratified into three BMI groups, five age groups, and finally three functional groups determined by their self-selected gait speed. By means of statistical parametric mapping (SPM), statist…
