OBJECTIVE: Provide an overview of existing management strategies to suggest a guideline for surgical management of lumbar disk herniation in pregnant women based on time of presentation.

BACKGROUND: Emergency general surgery patients are increasingly being managed with an open abdomen (OA). Factors associated with complications after primary fascial closure (PFC) are unknown.
METHODS: Demographic and operative variables for all emergency general surgery patients managed with OA at an academic medical center were prospectively examined from June to December 2013. Primary outcome was complication requiring reoperation.

UNLABELLED: The objectives were to determine the frequency, and to describe the clinical and therapeutic aspects of amoebic liver abscess. This was a retrospective study in the general surgery department of the Gabriel Touré teaching hospital from 1 January 2004 to December 2008. Clopheline (2-3 micrograms/kg; 2-2.2 micrograms/kg in weak patients) as a component of premedication, for the induction to anesthesia, and in combined endotracheal anesthesia as an analgesic and vegetostabilizing agent has been used in 150 patients, aged 60 to 85 years during planned and emergency surgery. Reduced doses of barbiturates (3 mg/kg) and fentanyl (1.5-2.1 micrograms/kg for the induction to anesthesia and 0.5-0.67 micrograms/kg for analgesia maintenance) were used. At certain stages use was made of droperidol, beginning with a test dose 1.25 mg and not exceeding 5 mg during surgery.

All patients who had undergone general surgery in three different periods of time were prospectively recorded. Results were found to have been improving with significance owing to peri-operative antibiotic prophylaxis, mechanical suturing (for gastro-intestinal anastomoses), and introduction of a system of regular documentation. Rates of postoperative complications were also affected by the individual surgeon's efficiency and techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Because we have a limited number of surgeries performed under general anesthesia, implant removal after plate fixation for clavicular fracture is often performed under local anesthesia. However, it is unclear whether local anesthesia or general anesthesia is preferred. Therefore, we conducted a questionnaire survey of patients who had undergone implant removal surgery under local or general anesthesia after clavicle fracture surgery to assess their impressions of each procedure and which anesthesia they would prefer if they were to undergo plate removal in the future.
