A Robust and Real-Time Framework of Cross-Subject Myoelectric Control Model Calibration via Multi-Source Domain Adaptation.

Surface electromyogram (sEMG) has been widely used in hand gesture recognition. However, most previous studies focused on user-personalized models, which require a great amount of data from each new target user to learn the user-specific EMG patterns. In this work, we present a novel real-time gesture recognition framework based on multi-source domain adaptation, which learns extra knowledge from the data of other users, thereby reducing the data collection burdens on the target user. Additionally, compared with conventional domain adaptation methods which treat data from all users in the sour

Exploring the effect of the Group Size and Feedback of non-player character spectators in virtual reality exergames.

Despite the widespread interest in leveraging non-player characters (NPCs) to enhance gameplay experiences, there is a gap in understanding of how NPC spectators (i.e., those virtual characters in the scene that watch users' actions) affect players. For instance, the impact of NPC spectators' presence and feedback on players' performance and experience has not been studied, especially in virtual reality (VR) exergames. This paper aims to fill this gap and reports two user studies that assess their effect on such games. Study 1 explored the impact of having NPC spectators present and their feed

Early communication development in children with Rett syndrome.

This retrospective pilot study investigated the course of pre-linguistic and linguistic communication development in children with Rett syndrome (RS) from birth to 24 months of age. Parents of 17 children with RS completed a questionnaire based on the Clinical Linguistic Auditory Milestone Scale. No child exceeded single word use and most children had begun to regress. Pre-regression delay was in evidence along with limited intentional gestural communication as a precursor to single word use. Limited use of communicative gestures is suggested as a possible early predictor of RS pending further…

Task demands and limb apraxia in stroke.

The present study was designed to examine the frequency and severity of apraxia in patients with left- or right-hemisphere stroke in both pantomime and imitation conditions and to compare the frequency of apraxia in each stroke group across the three patterns of apraxia described in Roy's model (Roy, 1996). Ninety-nine stroke patients and 15 age-matched healthy adults performed eight transitive gestures to pantomime and to imitation. Gestural performance was quantified as accuracy on five performance dimensions; a composite score, an arithmetic combination of the five performance dimensions, w…

The Cost of Social Integration: Distinct Neural Inefficiency in Autistic Children Underlies Symptom Severity.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, as individuals with ASD process social cues like gestures and facial expressions in a unique way. Despite this knowledge, the exact neurophysiological mechanisms driving these differences and their direct impact on clinical symptoms remain unclear. This study delves deeper into understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms involved in social cue integration, moving beyond mere behavioral observations. Specifically, we investigated how autistic children and typically developing (TD) peers process congruent …

Improving language without words: first evidence from aphasia.

The pervasiveness of word-finding difficulties in aphasia has motivated several theories regarding management of the deficit and its effectiveness. Recently, the hypothesis was advanced that instead of simply accompanying speech gestures participate in language production by increasing the semantic activation of words grounded in sensory-motor features, hence facilitating retrieval of the word form. Based on this assumption, several studies have developed rehabilitation therapies in which the use of gestures reinforces word recovery. Until now, however, no studies have investigated the benefic…

Neural and cognitive bases of upper limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neural and cognitive bases of upper limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration (CBD). METHODS: Eighteen patients with CBD underwent a cognitive neuropsychological assessment of apraxia and resting [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose PET scanning. Two complementary measures of apraxia were computed for each modality of gesture production. First, a performance score measured error frequency during gesture execution. Second, as a more stringent test of the integrity of the praxis system, the correction score measured the patient's ability to correct his or her errors on a sec

Hemispheric specialization in spontaneous gesticulation in a patient with callosal disconnection.

This is an investigation of spontaneous gesticulation in a left-handed patient with a callosal disconnection syndrome due to infarction of the total length of the corpus callosum. After callosal infarction, the patient gesticulated predominantly unilaterally with the left hand despite left apraxia. Bilateral gesticulation occurred later on and was presumably achieved by an increase in ipsilateral proximal control. Movement analysis further indicated that the two hemispheres are specialized for certain gesture types. Gestures with emotional connotation and batons (emphasizing prosody) were gene…

[Neuropsychological aspects of disorders of higher functions of the cerebral cortex in children with speech disorders].

A complex and multiaspects study of the high cerebral function--speech, gnosis, praxis, gesture and mimics has been coducted on 98 children with proved speech defects--alalia, dyslalia, dysgraphia, dyslexia and stammering. In high percentage of the children various focal neurological signs have been established (so called soft neurological symptoms). Very high was the percentage of the children with visual-space defects. Rhythm gnosis and praxis suffered mostly in children with motor alalia. The tests for gesture and mimics prevailed. The unified mechanism of the disturbed development of the s

Sequential and non-speech praxic abilities in developmental verbal apraxia.

Verbal and non-verbal sequential abilities were compared in a group of 10 children with developmental verbal apraxia. Manual gestures, constructional praxic abilities and non-speech volitional oral movements were also studied. Results indicated that these children were deficient in verbal sequential abilities, both with reference to their non-verbal sequential abilities and to normative data. As a group, the children did not present manual-gestural or constructional apraxias, nor oral apraxias for single non-speech volitional movements. However, most had difficulty with sequences of non-speech…

An fMRI study of imitation: action representation and body schema.

Recent neuropsychological investigations of apraxia have led to new hypotheses about the representational defects associated with imitation impairments in neurological patients. This fMRI experiment investigated the relation between imitation and the body schema in healthy subjects. Experimental conditions were derived from a factorial plan, and participants were asked to watch a human model performing bodily gestures and then to execute either an identical or a different action, with the same or different limbs. Brain areas activated when subjects imitated the model were traced to the represe…

[Technique and management of urinary catheterization in men].

INTRODUCTION: In France, the urinary catheterization especially in men, is governed by Article R. 4311-10 of Decree No. 2004-802 of 29 July 2004 of the Public Health Code. Although this gesture is framed by law, there is currently no French guidelines formalized on a single and easily accessible support for the technique and management of the urinary catheterization. The aim of this study was to provide a simple reference about technical aspects and management of urinary catheterization in men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The European recommendations on urinary catheterization were updated and ada

[Knee tendinopathies and sports practice].

Knee tendinosis are frequent in sports practice. They are often in relation with sports gesture. Chronic patellar tendinosis are found so more often at the specialist's of jump (athletics and collective sports). The tendinopathies of the tensor of the fascia lata are more often diagnosed at the runner's, while the tendinopathies of the biceps or the harmstrings concern more frequently cyclists. The clinical examination allows to precise the sport concerned, to make the diagnosis, and to look for abnormalities of the morphotype or technical errors. Proximal and distal. Rethinking linguistic form and use for clinical purposes.

With clinical purposes in mind, a review of the proximal/distal opposition is carried out in order to define a universal parameter of variability in semiotic procedures. By taking into consideration different-although notionally inter-related-senses of the proximal/distal opposition, a cluster of semiotic properties is proposed, which initially permits one to characterize dimensions of variability in the form and use of gestures. The subsequent and central aim of this paper is, however, to demonstrate that the same, or homologous, properties can also serve to characterize variability in the us…

Ideomotor apraxia in early Alzheimer's disease: time and accuracy measures.

Twenty-six Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 42 healthy control (NC) subjects were evaluated with neuropsychological and apraxia batteries. ADs produced a greater range of error types, but did not differ from NCs in their most frequent error types. Hand sequencing ability contributed significantly to AD praxis with no predictors for NCs. Although groups did not differ in gesture time, the AD group had significantly longer response latencies for periods prior to gesture execution and the effect was prominent for transitive tasks and nondominant hand use. Results illustrate the sensitivity of timing

FedEMG: Achieving Generalization, Personalization, and Resource Efficiency in EMG-Based Upper-Limb Rehabilitation Through Federated Prototype Learning.

Upper extremity amputation, often necessitated by traumatic injuries, significantly impacts an individual's well-being. This paper addresses the critical challenges of deploying deep learning for real-time electromyography-based gesture recognition in prosthetic control: generalization across users and time, the personalization-generalization trade-off, and computational constraints. We propose Federated Electromyography (FedEMG), a novel Federated Prototype Learning (FPL) framework that leverages a prototype-based approach for efficient knowledge transfer and a unique adaptive personalization

Development and Evaluation of a Hybrid Measurement System to Determine the Kinematics of the Wrist.

Optical Motion Capture Systems (OMCSs) are considered the gold standard for kinematic measurement of human movements. However, in situations … uracy of this hybrid system [MIMU + OMCS] during a simple hairdressing gesture. During hair cutting gestures, the root mean square error compared with the OMCS was 4.53° (1.45°) for flexion/extension, 5.07° (1.30°) for adduction/abduction, and 3.65° (1.19°) for pronation/supination. During combing gestures, they were significantly higher, but remained belo …

The challenge of apraxia: Toward an operational definition?

The diagnosis of limb apraxia relies mainly on exclusion criteria (e.g., elementary motor or sensory deficits, aphasia). Due to the diversity of apraxia definitions and assessment methods, patients may or may not show apraxia depending on the chosen assessment method or theory, making the definition of apraxia somewhat arbitrary. As a result, "apraxia" may be diagnosed in patients with different cognitive impairments. Based on a quantitative and critical review of the literature, it is argued that this situation has its roots in the evolution from a task-based approach (i.e., the use of gold s
