Eye signs and tic disorders: Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Eye tics are among the most common manifested symptoms of tic disorders, including Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS). METHODS: A review of medical literature or ocular signs and symptoms of tic disorders was conducted. RESULTS: Tic disorders are characterized by repetitive and often disabling movements that primarily involve the eyes, face, neck, and voice apparatus. In addition, patients with tics may have eye problems related to medications used to control tics. Some eye signs are atypical in tic disorders and their presence may suggest alternate diagnoses. CONCLUSION: Ey

[Analysis of personality dimension of the children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome].

196 children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome were tested by using Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). The result indicated that the introversion personality and high psychological defense level were the main psychological personality characteristics of those children. It suggested that the psychological support and positive guide could decrease the psychological depression and lower the psychological defense levels of patients and then reduce the symptoms.

Abnormal topography of EEG microstates in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Quantitative analysis of scalp EEGs was performed on 13 patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) and 25 matched controls. The analysis method was adaptive segmentation, which describes the topography and sequence of brain electric fields in continuous EEG. The GTS patients showed an abnormal increase in fields with a right-frontal/left-posterior configuration. The GTS patient's EEGs did not differ from normal controls in the average duration of the brain electric microstates, field stability and EEG carrier frequency. To find out whether the abnormal activity is similar to movement-r

Advance information and movement sequencing in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome is a chronic neurological disorder manifested by involuntary motor tics and vocalisations. Because the basal ganglia have been implicated in the pathology underlying Tourette's syndrome, the present two procedures, both involving sequential movements, sought to determine the extent to which patients with Tourette's syndrome were reliant on, and could utilise different levels of advance information. Patients with Tourette's syndrome were found to be more reliant than controls on external visual cues to execute rather than to initiate a motor programme. When there was a high

Can children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome edit their intentions?

In this paper we describe a cognitive mechanism, the Intention Editor, which is triggered whenever there are several intentions competing in parallel with each other. This mechanism is hypothesized to be a subcomponent of a larger mechanism, the Supervisory Attentional System (SAS: Shallice, 1988) which serves inhibition in general. The Intention Editor interrupts one of several simultaneously activated intentions, preventing it from executing its action, utterance, or thought. This mechanism appears to develop during the first five to six years of life. We propose that an impairment in the de

[Current theories on the etiology and treatment of Gilles de la Tourette's disease].

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a condition marked by: (1) onset usually in childhood and adolescence, i.e. between 2 and 15 years of life; (2) violent facial tics and echolalia; (3) increased excitability and apathy; (4) progressive increase in symptoms intensity; (5) chronic course. This syndrome is threefold more frequent in men than in women. None hypothesis concerning its etiopathogenesis (genetic, organic, organic-functional, psychomotor, and mixed) does explain its origin. Many cases respond with some degree of relief to neuroleptics, carbamazepine, clonidine, and glucocorticosteroids

Cassette EEG sleep recordings in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) patients often complain of sleep problems, and questionnaire studies indicate that sleep disturbance is frequent. Decreased slow wave sleep and increased awakenings have been reported in laboratory polysomnography in TS patients, and a serotoninergic disorder of arousal has been postulated. We recorded outpatient sleep in 20 patients newly diagnosed with TS utilizing a 4-channel cassette EEG system. The newly-diagnosed patients were predominantly male, and ranged in age from 10 to 36 years. Some had taken psychotropic medications in the past, but none had been treated sy

[Stereotaxic thalamotomy in the combined treatment of Gilles de la Tourette's disease].

The manifestations of Tourette's disease, represent the combination of neurologic and psychopathologic symptomatology. The patients show such manifestations as tics and obsessions while both groups of symptoms are fairly resistant to conservative therapy. The authors describe a case where stereotaxic cryodestruction of the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus was applied in addition to the treatment of the patient with medicamentous agents, psychotherapy and measures of social rehabilitation. Of special interest are descriptions of the effects of electric stimulation of different brain struct

Reflex tics in two patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Two patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) showed tics triggered by external stimuli. This unusual feature is of significance to the aetiology of GTS and in particular the relationship between GTS and the startle response.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome in twins: clinical and neurochemical data.

A pair of identical twins (probability of monozygosity by genetic marking = 99.99%) with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) were studied clinically and neurochemically. The two boys were distinguished within the family by dramatic differences in their behavior and tics. Twin 1 had severe motor tics, loud vocalizations, coprolalia, and school behavior problems, whereas twin 2 was only mildly affected. Neither boy had ever been treated with medication for his tic disorder. Lumbar puncture was performed on each after a night of bed rest. In spite of the marked clinical differences between the

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is not linked to D2-dopamine receptor.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome has an important genetic component; the pathophysiology of this disorder may involve the dopamine system. We tested a D2-dopamine receptor (locus DRD2, recognized by probe hD2G1) for genetic linkage with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Using a genetic linkage map of the region of DRD2 on the long arm of chromosome 11 and restriction fragment length polymorphism data from a total of four markers (DRD2 itself, D11S84, D11S29, and PBGD), we were able to exclude linkage of this candidate gene and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in two extended kindreds segregating for

Routine and quantitative EEG analysis in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GdlT) is a neurobehavioral disorder, with a reportedly high frequency of EEG abnormalities. We performed EEGs on 48 consecutive patients with GdlT, and frequency analysis in 26 patients (17 males), and compared the results with those from age- and sex-matched normal controls. Routine 18-channel EEG revealed minimal diffuse nonspecific slowing in only 3 of 48 patients (6%) and in 2 of 26 controls (7.7%). The frequency analysis of the EEG of the 26 GdlT patients and their normal controls showed similar brain activity. We conclude that no significant differences

Pain in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and related tic disorders.

Although pain is not generally recognized as a symptom of tic disorders, we have seen a number of patients in whom this was a prominent feature, at times even the symptom of greatest concern. The commonest pain complaints are those arising from the actual performance of a tic. Most often this follows directly from the discomfort produced by sudden or repeated extreme exertion. Here the origin of the pain is usually musculoskeletal, though rare examples of neuropathic pain may occur. Pain also may arise from striking or being struck by a moving body part involved in large amplitude tics. Other

Contingent negative variation in adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Three deflections or waves of the Contingent Negative Variation (CNV): the Slow Negative Wave (SNW), the Terminal CNV (TCNV) and the Post Imperative Negative Variation (PINV) were studied in 18 adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and in 15 controls. The patients showed a reduced SNW, a normal TCNV and an increased PINV. Moreover, at the right parietal region the patients demonstrated a decreased SNW, TCNV and PINV. The results are discussed in relation to behavioral and neuropsychological disturbances found in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The fish gill: site of action and model for toxic effects of environmental pollutants.

The gill epithelium is the site of gas exchange, ionic regulation, acid-base balance, and nitrogenous waste excretion by fishes. The last three processes are controlled by passive and active transport of various solutes across the epithelium. Various environmental pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, acid rain, and organic xenobiotics) have been found to affect the morphology of the gill epithelium. Associated with these morphological pathologies, one finds alterations in blood ionic levels, as well as gill Na,K-activated ATPase activity and ionic fluxes. Such physiological disturbances may underly

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. A postmortem neuropathological and immunohistochemical study.

Immunocytochemical studies of the human forebrain have shown that enkephalin-like, dynorphin-like and substance-P-like immunoreactivity (respectively ELI, DLI, and SPI) normally present in unique pattern (now termed woolly fibers) in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra, in which their concentration is at its densest. Quantitative determinations moreover indicate that the levels of all 3 peptides are higher in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra than in any other region of the brain. We report here the distribution of immunoreactivity of these 3 peptides in the brain of a patient show
