The treatment of desquamative gingival lesions.

The treatment of desquamative gingival lesions is dependent on the correct diagnosis of the underlying disease, which is frequently dermatologic. This is determined by clinical observations, as well as by histologic and immunologic examination of gingival biopsy specimens. The recommended treatment of desquamative lesions caused by lichen planus, cicatricial pemphigoid (benign mucous membrane pemphigoid), pemphigus, and psoriasis, the most common dermatoses causing gingival lesions, is summarized on the basis of 62 cases and reports in the literature.

The free autogenous gingival graft.

The free autogenous gingival graft is an excellent surgical procedure for treating gingival extension. It is a procedure that can be performed rapidly with little postoperative trauma to the patient. Its greatest feature is the high degree of predictability of success in producing a specific dimension of masticatory mucosa. However, we have a moral and ethical obligation to our patients to be more selective in its use in treating gingival recession. Too many patients have been subjected to unnecessary surgery, especially in cases in which the recession has been of long duration and is stable.

Gingival recession and tooth mobility.

Tooth mobility measurements were carried out on 107 teeth with gingival recession in 20 subjects. Alveolar bone dehiscence around 43 of these teeth was measured during flap surgery in 13 subjects. No significant correlation was found between gingival recession and tooth mobility, and between tooth mobility and alveolar bone dehiscence. A positive, significant correlation was present between gingival recession and bone dehiscence. In 17 of the subjects, tooth mobility of 29 homologous contralateral teeth with and without gingival recession was compared. The difference was not significant. The r

Clinical Effects of Zinc-containing Stents on Gingivitis: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the effects of zinc-containing stents on gingival inflammation, bleeding, and plaque regrowth in patients with gingivitis. METHODS: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at Çukurova University, enrolling 42 systemically healthy gingivitis patients aged 18-30. Participants were assigned to either a test group (Zn group) or a control group (placebo stents) and instructed to wear their stents for at least 12 h daily for 4 weeks after scaling. Clinical measurements, including gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and bleeding on prob…

Desquamative Gingivitis Revisited: A Narrative Review on Pathophysiology, Diagnostic Challenges, and Treatment.

Background and objectives: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a clinical term used to describe gingival conditions marked by erythema (unrelated to dental plaque), epithelial desquamation, and various intraoral lesions, with occasional extraoral involvement. It is typically linked to a range of underlying diseases. Materials and methods: A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library, searching with keywords like "oral dysplasia", "oral mucosa lesions", or "desquamative gingivitis". In addition to the literature review, a case report of …

Investigation of Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax in gingivitis and periodontitis patients.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to determine the prevalence of Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax in periodontitis and gingivitis patients and their distribution according to some risk factors. METHODS: The study was conducted on a total of 120 people, including 40 patients with periodontitis, 40 patients with gingivitis, and 40 healthy individuals as a control group. Scraping samples taken from mandibular right incisal region, maxillary right sulcus region and maxillary right palatal cervical regions were examined under a light microscope for E. gingivalis and T. tenax. RESULTS: Prevalence …

Self-perceived quality of social roles, activities and relationships predicts incident gingivitis.

OBJECTIVES: While physical health status is known to impact social functioning, a growing literature suggests that social well-being may aff … , moderate or low. The main outcome was incident self-reported gum bleeding (dichotomous, proxy for gingivitis). Survey-weighted logistic regression modelling adjusted for overall health status, sociodemographic (e.g. age, sex, race/ethnicity), socioeconomic (e.g. income, education) and behavioural (e.g. tobacco, alcohol) confounders and was used to predict …

"Plasma cell gingivitis" encompasses multiple entities: a retrospective series of 37 cases.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell gingivitis is defined as gingival inflammation comprised of plasma cell infiltrates. This diagnostic criterion is non-specific and underlying mechanisms remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: We performed a multidisciplinary clinico-pathological review of cases previously identified as "gingivitis with plasma cell infiltrates", with assessment of putative contributing factors and critical appraisal of the final diagnosis. MATERIALS & METHODS: Cases previously identified as "gingivitis with plasma cell infiltrates" between 2000 and 2020 were included from archives from the GEMUB …
