Insight into global research on health literacy and heart diseases: A bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) has shown its important role on reducing the burden of heart diseases. However, no study has provided a comprehensive worldwide view of the data regarding HL and heart diseases. The study aimed to provide insight into: (1) the intellectual structure, (2) research trends, and (3) research gaps on HL and heart diseases; and (4) to explore HL scales commonly utilized in heart studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies related to HL and heart diseases were retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. All publications published between 2000 and 2021 were include

Trends in health and disability in Botswana. An analysis of the global burden of disease study.

PURPOSE: Globally, years of life lost are declining, while years lived with disability are increasing. In high socio-demographic index countries, this trend has been attributed to an overall ageing population and rehabilitation services have begun to adjust to this change. In low- and middle-income countries, this trend is less well understood. Hence, the WHO's 'Rehabilitation 2030 Call for Action' and 'Rehabilitation in Health Systems Guide' call for better assessment of the situation. In order to understand trends and causes in middle income countries such as Botswana, we examine the change

Mosquito-Borne Diseases as a Global Health Problem: Implications for Pregnancy and Travel.

IMPORTANCE: Mosquitoes are the most common disease vectors worldwide. A combination of factors, including changes in public health policy, climate change, and global travel, has led to the resurgence and spread of these diseases in our modern world. Pregnant women are vulnerable to a number of these illnesses, and obstetricians are likely to encounter pregnant travelers who have been exposed. OBJECTIVE: This review was conducted to summarize knowledge of mosquito-borne diseases and their relevance in pregnancy. This will allow obstetricians to provide proper advice regarding travel and prepar

Neonatal resuscitation in global health settings: an examination of the past to prepare for the future.

As rates of childhood mortality decline, neonatal deaths account for nearly half of under-5 deaths worldwide. Intrapartum-related events (birth asphyxia) contribute to approximately one-quarter of neonatal deaths, many of which can be prevented by simple resuscitation and newborn care interventions. This paper reviews various lines of research that have influenced the global neonatal resuscitation landscape. A brief situational analysis of asphyxia-related newborn mortality in low-resource settings is linked to renewed efforts to reduce neonatal mortality in the Every Newborn Action Plan. Poss

Mentoring health researchers globally: Diverse experiences, programmes, challenges and responses.

Mentoring experiences and programmes are becoming increasingly recognised as important by those engaged in capacity strengthening in global health research. Using a primarily qualitative study design, we studied three experiences of mentorship and eight mentorship programmes for early career global health researchers based in high-income and low- and middle-income countries. For the latter, we drew upon programme materials, existing unpublished data and more formal mixed-method evaluations, supplemented by individual email questionnaire responses. Research team members wrote stories, and the t…

Laboratory systems and services are critical in global health: time to end the neglect?

The $63 billion comprehensive global health initiative (GHI) emphasizes health systems strengthening (HSS) to tackle challenges, including child and maternal health, HIV/AIDS, family planning, and neglected tropical diseases. GHI and other initiatives are critical to fighting emerging and reemerging diseases in resource-poor countries. HSS is also an increasing focus of the $49 billion program of the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Laboratory systems and services are often neglected in resource-poor settings, but the fu…

Global tuberculosis trends: a reflection of changes in tuberculosis control or in population health?

BACKGROUND: Many international organizations are advocating for new funds for tuberculosis (TB) specific interventions. Although this approach should help reduce TB incidence, improvements in population health may also be important. We have analyzed the association between changes in population health and health service indicators, and concomitant changes in TB incidence between 1990 and 2005. METHODS: Country level data on population health and health services, economic and epidemiologic indicators were obtained for 165 countries. Regression methods were used to estimate the association of c

Smoking as a persistent global health challenge: perspectives on heated tobacco products.

Smoking remains one of the leading preventable causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, significantly contributing to the healthcare burden. Despite decades of public awareness, many people are unable to quit combustible cigarette (CC) smoking due to nicotine dependence and/or limited access to effective cessation support. Various alternative tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products (HTPs) and nicotine pouches have been promoted as lesser harm alternatives; among which HTPs have received increasing attention lately. However, these products differ substantially in thei

Chikungunya virus: global epidemiology, transmission dynamics, and emerging challenges for public health.

During the last twenty years, Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), an arthropod-borne alphavirus, has resurged globally and emerged as an important public health concern. Driven by viral adaptive mutations, rapid urbanization, climate change, and the global expansion of Aedes mosquito habitats, CHIKV has continuously expanded its geographic distribution and triggered recurrent outbreaks across multiple continents. In this review, we comprehensively synthesize recent progress in virology, epidemiology, vector biology, diagnostic innovations, and vaccine research, emphasizing the integrated mechanisms tha

From PHEIC to PHECs: reclaiming Africa's agency in global health security governance.

In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the African Union elevated the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to autonomous status, empowering it to declare Public Health Emergencies of Continental Concern (PHECs). This mechanism was first operationalized in 2024 in response to sustained mpox transmission across multiple African countries, despite the World Health Organization's (WHO) earlier lifting of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). This article examines the PHECs as a decolonial intervention in global health governance. Applying the Critique, …

Nicotine-containing products and the cardiovascular system: mechanisms and global health implications.

Tobacco use and emerging nicotine-delivery systems remain major, preventable drivers of cardiovascular disease worldwide. Although tobacco cigarette smoking has declined in some high-income regions, progress is uneven, with persistently high rates across parts of Europe, alongside rapidly expanding global markets for e-cigarettes, heated-tobacco products and oral nicotine formulations. Youth addiction to nicotine-containing products has emerged as an urgent public health challenge, as engineered e-cigarette devices delivering large nicotine doses facilitate early dependence and might establish

Folate and global health umbrella review series, part 2: syntheses on cancers.

BACKGROUND: Folate has been examined extensively in relation to carcinogenesis due to its role in one-carbon metabolism impacting the synthesis of DNA and RNA, methylation processes, and genomic integrity. Current evidence on the relationship between folate status and the risk of cancer is equivocal: low or deficient folate status may contribute to an increased risk of cancers, while high-dose folic acid supplementation may have adverse effects on carcinogenesis. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects up to Febru

US Global Health Leadership: The First Year of the Second Trump Administration.

The second Trump administration has shaken the foundations of US leadership in global health, with this column assessing rapid shifts in global health governance. By analyzing how the administration's anti-science ethos, foreign assistance cuts, and multilateral disengagement have undermined global solidarity, the column considers the destabilizing impacts on global health and examines how other states, regional bodies, and international organizations are responding to this US decline. This examination reveals both strains for global health promotion and resilience within a changed governance …

Structural ageism in health professional education: A Brazilian case with global implications.

Ageism remains a pervasive yet underexamined form of discrimination within health professions education. This narrative review develops a typology of educational ageism comprising three interrelated dimensions: curricular ageism, reflected in the omission or tokenistic inclusion of geriatrics and gerontology; institutional-structural ageism, expressed through organizational priorities, resource allocation, and policy frameworks that devalue aging-related care; and perceptual ageism, reflected in student attitudes shaped by professional socialization and the hidden curriculum. Grounded in the B
