Survival of microvascular free flaps in head and neck surgery after early interruption of the vascular pedicle.

Six to nineteen days after insertion of free flaps in oral defects three patients had secondary haemorrhages that necessitated the abolition of venous drainage in two cases and venous and arterial connections in the third. The flaps survived.

[Surgical treatment of cancer of the base of the tongue and epiglottis].

This paper reports the surgical treatment of 10 cases of cancer of the base of the tongue and the epiglottis resected by a translaryngeal approach. In addition, a brief description of the technique is introduced. All patients had squamous cell cancer which was obviously advanced to stage IV and the tumor mass had extended to the whole root of the tongue, the vallecula and the epiglottis. After operation, all patients learned to swallow effectively and no persistent aspiration occurred. The speech articulation was satisfactory. Postoperative follow-up of all the patients, the shortest being 13

Expression of EGFR and Cerb-B2 as prognostic factors in cancer of the tongue.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue is sometimes associated with local recurrence and regional metastases despite adequate surgical excision. The present study sought to determine if epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and Cerb-B2 expression has prognostic or predictive value in SCC of the tongue, as with other epithelial malignancies. The study sample comprised of 27 patients with carcinoma of the tongue who underwent partial glossectomy and neck dissection between 1990 and 1999. Average follow-up was 54 months. Specimens from 23 patients were analyzed for growth factor expression…

A Novel Macroglossia Severity Index for Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We propose the first classification scheme for macroglossia in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), the BWS Index of macroglossia (BIG). BACKGROUND: A clinically relevant anatomic scoring system to better characterize macroglossia severity could improve care in BWS. METHODS: Patients with molecularly confirmed BWS seen were included. Relationships among BIG scores, tongue reduction surgery, clinical score, percent mosaicism, and polysomnography were examined. RESULTS: Patients were classified from BIG0 to BIG3. BIG0 included those without macroglossia; BIG1 included t

Obstructive sleep apnoea and the role of tongue reduction surgery in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a rare paediatric overgrowth disorder. Associated macroglossia is a feature of many children with BWS and is felt to be a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Sleep-disordered breathing is highly variable in this population. The relationship between degree of macroglossia or other genotypic or phenotypic factors and OSA severity has not been established. The natural history of OSA in this population is unknown; a variety of conservative and surgical therapies have been used to treat OSA in children with BWS but none have been studied systematical

Management of cancer of the base of tongue.

The management of base of tongue cancer has evolved steadily over time. Organ preservation with primary radiation therapy has produced excellent oncologic and functional outcomes. Concomitant chemotherapy has become important in patients with locoregionally advanced disease. Planned neck dissection after organ preservation therapy continues to be an integral step for regional control. This article reports the results of a literature review of base of tongue cancer emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to obtain optimal results in terms of cure and quality of life.

DSHARP: Deep Incompressible Motion Estimation With Sinusoidal-Transformed Harmonic Phase for Tagged MRI.

Tagged magnetic resonance imaging (tMRI) is a valuable tool for visualizing and quantifying tissue deformation in vivo. Its use is often ham … ated incompressible motions, real 3D human tongue data acquired during speech from both healthy and glossectomy subjects, and cardiac tagged MRI from the public STACOM 2011 benchmark. Our approach outperforms HARP, SinMod, SyN, PVIRA, VoxelMorph, and DeepTag in tracking accuracy, computation speed, and preservation of incompressibility.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the head and neck after radiation for squamous cell carcinoma.

A 60-year-old man presented with malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the oropharynx. The mass extended into the nasopharynx and larynx and caused severe upper airway obstruction that required emergency tracheotomy. Ten years earlier, he had undergone a right partial glossectomy and segmental mandibulectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the right tongue base, followed by 50 Gy of radiation delivered over 33 sessions. The tumor was so aggressive that changes in its volume were visually distinguishable during physical examination over a 2-week hospital stay. Histologic evaluation revealed 7 mitotic…

Unusual Papillary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tip of Tongue Presenting in a Patient Status Post Heart Transplant.

Oral papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is an unusual variant of squamous cell carcinoma with a better prognosis. The most common location of PSCC in the oral cavity is the gingiva and buccal mucosa, and it is exceedingly rare in the tongue. Herein, we present a case of PSCC in an 85-year-old male with a history of heart transplant and long-term use of immunosuppression medication. A verrucous pedunculated mass measuring 3.5 cm in the greatest dimension was present on the tip of tongue and a partial glossectomy was performed. Histological diagnosis was well differentiated PSCC with focal…
