A case of endobronchial actinomycosis.

Actinomycosis is an infectious disease caused by certain Actinomyces species. Actinomyces are Gram-positive, non-spore forming organisms characterized by obligate or facultative anaerobic rods that normally inhabit anaerobic niches of the human oral cavity. Cervicofacial, abdominal, pelvic and thoracic infections of Actinomyces are not uncommon, but endobronchial actinomycosis is rarely reported. Endobronchial actinomycosis can be misdiagnosed as unresolving pneumonia, endobronchial lipoma or malignancies. Endobronchial actinomycosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of any endo

Desulfitobacterium sp. strain PCE1, an anaerobic bacterium that can grow by reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene or ortho-chlorinated phenols.

A strictly anaerobic bacterium, strain PCE1, was isolated from a tetrachloroethene-dechlorinating enrichment culture. Cells of the bacterium were motile curved rods, with approximately four lateral flagella. They possessed a gram-positive type of cell wall and contained cytochrome c. Optimum growth occurred at pH 7.2-7.8 and 34-38 degrees C. The organism grew with L-lactate, pyruvate, butyrate, formate, succinate, or ethanol as electron donors, using either tetrachloroethene, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 3-chloro-4-hydroxy-phenylacetate, sulfite, thiosulfate, or fumarate as electron

Wound infection. Acute versus chronic cholecystitis.

Wound infection in 239 patients who underwent cholecystectomy were analyzed retrospectively. Seventeen per cent of the patients with acute cholecystitis had wound infection compared with 8.9 per cent of patients with chronic cholecystitis. Bacteriology of wound infections revealed Staphylococcus aureus in 76.4 per cent of the chronic cholecystitis group and in 12.5 per cent of the acute cholecystitis group. Wound infection in the acute cholecystitis group involved gram-negative rods predominantly. Organisms were isolated from bile culture in 71.4 per cent of acute cholecystitis patients compar

An older man with Bifidobacterium breve bacteremia, a rare condition in adults: A case report.

Bifidobacterium breve is an anaerobic, gram-positive rod commonly found in the human intestinal microbiota. While rarely associated with bacteremia, most cases occur in neonates receiving B. breve-containing probiotics. Here, we report a rare case of B. breve bacteremia in an 80-year-old man presenting in cardiopulmonary arrest, despite not taking B. breve-containing probiotics. Blood cultures identified B. breve, and an 18-day course of antibiotics resolved the bacteremia. The rarity of adult cases may reflect age-related microbiota shifts and potential underdiagnosis due to the limited accur

Triple Threat: A Case of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Septicemia Complicated by Multi-Valvular Endocarditis, Spinal Osteomyelitis, and Septic Embolic Stroke.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive rod associated with zoonotic infections, most commonly the soft tissues. It can be present in several ways, though most commonly as erysipeloid. Rarely, it may manifest systemically with septic organ involvement such as endocarditis or osteomyelitis. Here, we present the case of a 71-year-old male who presented to the hospital with back pain and neurological deficits. He was found to be bacteremic with E. rhusiopathiae, and imaging demonstrated the presence of multi-valvular endocarditis, spinal osteomyelitis with epidural abscess, and septic emb

Splenic abscesses in a returning traveler.

Burkholderia, an aerobic gram-negative rod, is the causative organism behind melioidosis and is a common soil and water organism found predominantly in South-East Asia. We report the case of a 68 year-old man returning from an extended trip to the Philippines, with splenic hypodense lesions on abdominal computer tomography scan, later confirmed to be culture-positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei. The patient was treated with a course of intravenous ceftazidime followed by eradication therapy with oral doxycycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. He recovered with complete resolution of symp

Listeria monocytogenes Infection in a Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) - New Mexico, 2011.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that can infect and cause disease in many species. In this case report, we describe a case of L. monocytogenes infection causing sepsis in a sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps). The sugar glider consumed a varied diet consisting of human food items, including cantaloupe. A nationwide outbreak of L. monocytogenes foodborne illness associated with cantaloupes occurred simultaneously with this incident case. In this case, the bacterial strains from the outbreak and glider were genetically distinct. Although rare,

Rothia dentocariosa sepsis in a pediatric renal transplant recipient having post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders.

BACKGROUND: Rothia dentocariosa (RD) is a Gram-positive rod that colonizes the human oral cavity and can cause infective endocarditis. RESULT: We report on a six-yr-old boy who underwent renal transplantation for polycystic kidney disease at the age of eight months. He developed post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders after four yr and progressive graft failure. Following chemotherapy, the patient presented with neutropenia and sepsis. RD was isolated from blood and treatment with piperacillin/tazobactam was initiated; however, the child died because of multiorgan failure. DISCUSSION:

Imaging Enterobacteriaceae infection in vivo with 18F-fluorodeoxysorbitol positron emission tomography.

The Enterobacteriaceae are a family of rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria that normally inhabit the gastrointestinal tract and are the most common cause of Gram-negative bacterial infections in humans. In addition to causing serious multidrug-resistant, hospital-acquired infections, a number of Enterobacteriaceae species are also recognized as biothreat pathogens. As a consequence, new tools are urgently needed to specifically identify and localize infections due to Enterobacteriaceae and to monitor antimicrobial efficacy. In this report, we used commercially available 2-[(18)F]-fluorodeoxygluc

In vitro attachment of oral microorganisms to solid surfaces: evaluation of a controlled flow method.

A flow cell method was modified to provide shear-controlled experimental conditions for monitoring initial attachment and detachment of oral microorganisms to solid surfaces. Whole unstimulated human saliva was collected and circulated at a flow rate of 1 ml/min, through a cell composed of two parallel test plates. Infrared-transparent plates of medium surface energy served as test substrata in these initial calibration experiments. The plates presented a similar distribution of polar forces and dispersion forces at the surface as that of human tooth enamel and some restorative dental material

Cefpodoxime: comparable evaluation with other orally available cephalosporins. With a note on the role of beta-lactamases.

The antibacterial activity of cefpodoxime, a new orally active methoxy-imino cephalosporin was evaluated in 470 recent isolates of gram-positive cocci and gram-negative rods from clinical specimens and compared to that of other orally active beta-lactam compounds. Cefpodoxime was highly active against ampicillin-resistant enterobacteria producing the plasmid-mediated TEM-1, TEM-2 or OXA-1 enzymes, as was the case for the other newer compounds. However, it was poorly active against cefuroxime-resistant (MIC greater than or equal to 16 mg/l) E. coli isolates, thus resembling cefetamet and cefixi

Bacterial Flora in the Sphenoid Sinus Changes with Perioperative Prophylactic Antibiotic Administration.

The complications of endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (ETSS) include meningitis and sinusitis, and these complications are troublesome. Some reports have investigated the type of bacteria and the susceptibility of sphenoid sinus mucosal flora to drugs. However, most specimens can be collected after perioperative antibiotic administration. In this study, 95 and 103 sphenoid sinus mucosal samples collected during ETSS from September 2013 to February 2015 and from June 2017 to January 2019, respectively, were examined for bacterial culture. Sphenoid sinus mucosal samples were collected after ant

Anaerobic and aerobic bacteriology of the saliva and gingiva from 16 captive Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis): new implications for the "bacteria as venom" model.

It has been speculated that the oral flora of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) exerts a lethal effect on its prey; yet, scant information about their specific oral flora bacteriology, especially anaerobes, exists. Consequently, the aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteriology of 16 captive Komodo dragons (10 adults and six neonates), aged 2-17 yr for adults and 7-10 days for neonates, from three U.S. zoos were studied. Saliva and gingival samples were collected by zoo personnel, inoculated into anaerobic transport media, and delivered by courier to a reference laboratory. Samples were cultur
