A simplified microimmunofluorescence test with trachoma-lymphogranuloma venereum (Chlamydia trachomatis) antigens has been devised as a screening test for antibody in human sera. The test differs from our standard procedure by amalgamating 15 different immunotypes into nine antigen pools, by using only three serum dilutions, and by dropping use of duplicate slides. The screening test could be performed on at least six times as many sera as the standard test for a given unit of effort. It was shown to have a sensitivity equal to the standard test and an ability to determine specific immunotype

The clinical concept of sexually transmitted diseases describes a common mode of transmission of pathogens spanning the full spectrum of medical microbiology. These organisms have few common biologic characteristics aside from their ability to colonize or invade particular anatomic sites. New information on the biology of sexually transmitted pathogens has led to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Understanding that patients with sexually transmitted pathogens may be asymptomatic or may be simultaneously infected with multiple organisms has important implications for epidemiologic

We report successful culture of Calymmatobacterium granulomatis by standard cell culture methods. Swabs were obtained from lesions in three patients with a clinical diagnosis of donovanosis. For two patients, there was histological confirmation of the disease (i.e., the presence of Donovan bodies in Giemsa-stained smears). Specimens were inoculated onto cycloheximide-treated HEp-2 cell monolayers in RPMI 1640 medium (supplemented with fetal calf serum, NaHCO3, vancomycin hydrochloride, and benzylpenicillin). At 48 h, organisms resembling Donovan bodies were identified in monolayer cultures fro

A 29-year-old female presented with chronic postpartum abdominal pain. Computerized tomography scan was consistent with ovarian carcinoma, and biopsy yielded macrophages laden with eosinophilic bodies. Cultures, histoplasma serologies, and taxoplasma serologies were negative. A diagnosis of pelvic donovanosis was reached; the patient was treated with azithromycin resulting in clinical and radiographic resolution.

Donovanosis has been ignored for many years until recently. The condition still has a limited geographical distribution. A significant epidemic of donovanosis has been identified in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa where it may be a risk factor for acquiring HIV in men. After a gap of more than 30 years, the organism was cultured by researchers in Durban, South Africa and Darwin, Australia. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques for donovanosis were developed soon after, most recently using a colorimetric detection system. Similarities between the causative organism, Calymmatobacterium granulom

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological and clinical features of donovanosis and their relevance to the possible coincident risk of HIV-1 transmission in patients attending an STD clinic.
DESIGN: Assessment of patients with donovanosis diagnosed by the detection of Donovan bodies on tissue smears stained by the RapiDiff technique.
SETTING: City Health STD Clinic, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and seventy one patients with donovanosis.
RESULTS: Donovan bodies were detected in 171 (130 men, 41 women). Ulcers were present for longer than 28 days

Sexually transmitted diseases in tropical Africa are a severe problem. The facilities for diagnosis and treatment in general are pour. Reliable informations on epidemiology are rare. Gonorrhea and non-gonorrheal urethritis are probably the commonest in tropical Africa, frequently giving rise to epididymitis, urethral strictures and salpingitis as well as pelvic inflammatory diseases, important factors of infertility. Evidence available suggests that the incidence of infectious syphilis is high. Some authors however are of the opinion that there is a steady decline of the condition. Among young

From the moment WHO was established in 1948, the control of venereal diseases was felt to deserve highest priority, together with activities to control malaria and tuberculosis. International action was needed in view of the high morbidity and mortality from venereal diseases, their serious human and social consequences, and the prevalence of congenital syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhoea, chancroid, venereal lymphogranulomatosis, granuloma inguinale). WHO immediately set up a global programme for the control of STDs and, with the participation of other agencies, espec…

The sexual transmitted pathogens associated with genital ulcers are Treponema pallidum, Haemophilus ducreyi, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, Chlamydia trachomatis and Herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. Although geographic differences still exist, herpetic infections prevalence is growing worldwide as the most frequent ulcerative sexual transmitted disease. The failure of the many different used guidelines in achieving a sustained reduction in the number of new cases, in particular the WHO syndromic management, leads into an over treatment of bacterial agents and missing of viral agents. This s

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common and they can involve the anus and rectum in both men and women. In this article, the main bacterial and viral STDs that affect the anus and rectum are discussed, including their prevalence, presentation, and treatment.
