Carotid intima-media thickness, fibroblast growth factor 23, and mineral bone disorder in children with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a measure of atherosclerotic vascular disease and a surrogate biomarker for cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Mineral and bone disorders (MBD) are complications of CKD, contributing to vascular calcification and accelerated atherosclerosis. Increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)-the earliest detectable serum abnormality associated with CKD-MBD-has been linked with cardiovascular disease in patients with CKD. This study aimed to identify factors and analyze the relationship associated with high cIMT, hi

Trajectories of depression among patients in treatment for opioid use disorder: A growth mixture model secondary analysis of the XBOT trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To inform clinical practice, we identified subgroups of adults based on levels of depression symptomatology over time during opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment. METHODS: Participants were 474 adults in a 24-week treatment trial for OUD. Depression symptoms were measured using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) at nine-time points. This was a secondary analysis of the Clinical Trials Network Extended-Release Naltrexone versus Buprenorphine for Opioid Treatment (XBOT) trial using a growth mixture model. RESULTS: Three distinct depression trajectori

Growth-related changes in the influence of obesity on signs suggesting sleep-disordered breathing and sleepiness in young individuals with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), who cease growing earlier than individuals without DS. These characteristics may be associated with increased obesity and subsequent SDB signs, such as snoring and apnoea or excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Thus, we assessed the influence of growth on the association between obesity and SDB signs or EDS; we used questionnaires sent to young individuals with DS and their caregivers, in a cross-sectional study. METHODS: We sent out 2000 questionnaires to individuals with DS and their care

3-Chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid, a Metabolite of the Fungicide Fluopyram, Causes Growth Disorder in Vitis vinifera.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 3-chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid (PCA), a metabolite of the fungicide fluopyram, on grapevine. During spring and summer 2015, grapevine growth disorders were observed in several countries in Europe. An unprecedented herbicide-like damage was diagnosed on leaves and flowers, causing significant loss of harvest. This study proposes PCA as the causing agent of the observed growth disorders. PCA was shown to cause leaf epinasty, impaired berry development that leads to crop loss, and root growth anomalies in Vitis vinifera …

Partial Loss of USP9X Function Leads to a Male Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Disorder Converging on Transforming Growth Factor β Signaling.

BACKGROUND: The X-chromosome gene USP9X encodes a deubiquitylating enzyme that has been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders primarily in female subjects. USP9X escapes X inactivation, and in female subjects de novo heterozygous copy number loss or truncating mutations cause haploinsufficiency culminating in a recognizable syndrome with intellectual disability and signature brain and congenital abnormalities. In contrast, the involvement of USP9X in male neurodevelopmental disorders remains tentative. METHODS: We used clinically recommended guidelines to collect and interrogate the pa

Etiologic theories of idiopathic scoliosis: enantiomorph disorder concept of bilateral symmetry, physeally-created growth conflicts and possible prevention.

The detection of anomalous extra-spinal left-right skeletal length asymmetries in the upper limbs, periapical ribs, ilia and lower limbs of subjects with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) raises questions about skeletal bilateral symmetry of vertebrates in health and disorder, its origin and control. The vertebrate body plan externally has mirror-image bilateral symmetries that are highly conserved culminating in the adult form. The normal human body can be viewed as containing paired skeletal structures in the axial and appendicular skeleton as 1) separate left and right paired forms (eg

Profiles of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Chinese Emerging Adults: Associations With Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and Posttraumatic Growth.

Individuals who experience adverse events during their early life stages are more likely to face negative consequences across various life domains throughout their lifespan. While latent profile analysis has been increasingly applied to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) worldwide, simultaneous prospective investigations of negative and positive posttraumatic outcomes in Chinese emerging adults remain scarce. The present study aimed to extend prior literature by: (a) assessing the latent profile groupings of ACEs among emerging adults, and (b) analyzing the prospective associations between l

Overexpression in Plasmodium falciparum of an intrinsically disordered protein segment of PfUT impairs the parasite's proteostasis and reduces its growth rate.

The proteome of Plasmodium falciparum exhibits a marked propensity for aggregation. This characteristic results from the parasite's AT-rich genome, which encodes numerous proteins with long asparagine-rich stretches and low structural complexity, which lead to abundant intrinsically disordered regions. While this poses challenges for the parasite, the propensity for protein aggregation may also serve functional roles, such as stress adaptation, and could therefore be exploited by targeting it as a potential vulnerable spot in the pathogen. Here, we overexpressed an aggregation-prone segment of

Long-term effect of growth hormone on sleep-disordered breathing in Malaysian children with Prader-Willi syndrome: a retrospective study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The effect of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) on sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in Malaysian children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is under-investigated. We determined (1) the short- and long-term effects of rhGH and (2) factors associated with worsening SDB in children with PWS receiving rhGH. METHODS: This retrospective study included children with PWS (with and without rhGH) who had undergone at least 1 polysomnography. Outcomes measured were the presence of SDB before and after starting rhGH and the progress of SDB with and without rhGH. Serial insulin-like

Novel PFOS alternative OBS inhibits body growth of developing zebrafish by triggering thyroid function disorder and osteoclast differentiation.

The extensive use of the perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) alternative sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) has resulted in its widespread detection in the environment and enrichment in wildlife and humans. However, little is known about its potential toxicity, particularly in terms of body development. In this study, zebrafish embryos were acutely exposed to PFOS and OBS for a comparative developmental toxicity assessment. Both PFOS and OBS led to lower body weight and shorter body length, and the damaging effects of PFOS were more severe than those of OBS at the same exposure

Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Improves LPS-Induced Lipid Disorder and Organ Injury by Regulating Metabolomic Characteristics in Mice.

Sepsis is extremely heterogeneous pathology characterized by complex metabolic changes. Fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) is a well-known intestine-derived inhibitor of bile acid biosynthesis. However, it is largely unknown about the roles of FGF19 in improving sepsis-associated metabolic disorder and organ injury. In the present study, mice were intravenously injected recombinant human FGF19 daily for 7 days followed by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration. At 24 hours after LPS stimuli, sera were collected for metabolomic analysis. Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) network based on diffe

Growth and neurodevelopmental disorder with arthrogryposis, microcephaly and structural brain anomalies caused by Bi-allelic partial deletion of SMPD4 gene.

Neutral sphingomyelinases have an important role in generation of ceramide and phosphorylcholine from sphingomyelins which then act as secondary messengers in various signaling pathways of the cellular machinery. They function ubiquitously with a predominant role in the central nervous system. Neutral sphingomyelinase type 3, encoded by SMPD4 gene has recently been reported to cause a severe autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental disorder with congenital arthrogryposis and microcephaly. We report a 22-month-old girl having characteristic features of neurodevelopmental delay, prenatal onset gro

A case report of Noonan syndrome-like disorder with loose anagen hair 2 treated with recombinant human growth hormone.

Protein phosphatase 1 catalytic subunit beta (PPP1CB) is a disease-causing gene of Noonan-like syndrome, which acts via the RAS/MAPK pathway. To date, only 17 patients diagnosed with PPP1CB-related Noonan-like syndrome have been reported around the world, with few reports in Asia. Twelve reported patients are of short stature and only one patient was treated with growth hormone (GH); however, follow-up data is lacking. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported patient with complete recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment follow-up data; the patient has a de novo c.146C

Rumination mediates the relationships of fear and guilt to posttraumatic stress disorder and posttraumatic growth among adolescents after the Ya'an earthquake.

Background: Although previous research has demonstrated that fear and guilt have an effect on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it is still unclear how these two emotions affect posttraumatic growth (PTG). Moreover, few studies have examined the mechanisms by which fear and guilt affect PTSD and PTG. Guided by Lee et al.'s theory of PTSD generation mechanisms and Calhoun and Tedeschi's PTG theory, the current study proposes that intrusive rumination (IR) and deliberate rumination (DR) may play a mediating role in the effects of guilt and fear on PTSD and PTG. Objective: This study aimed to
