We report two cases illustrating treatment for adjacent facial gingival recession using guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes. The clinical results showed that GTR obtained soft tissue coverage of the root surfaces and was effective in reducing hypersensitivity and improving the esthetics. In both cases, satisfying clinical results have been maintained for 6 to 12 months after re-entry procedure.

A conscious effort should be made at the time of tooth extraction to eliminate or lessen the creation of a defect within the residual alveolar ridge. This objective can be achieved if teeth are extracted in an atraumatic manner and appropriate implant materials are placed into the sockets to prevent the eventual collapse of the ridge. Guided tissue regeneration procedures also may be used to prevent collapse within the ridge or augment an existing defect. In many instances, deformed ridges can be augmented to their former dimensions by the use of pouch, interpositional, or onlay graft procedur…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Transplantation of cultured postnatal allogeneic thymus has been successful for treating athymia, mostly associated with complete DiGeorge syndrome, for more than 20 years. Advances in molecular genetics provide opportunities for widening the range of athymic conditions that can be treated while advances in cell culture and organ/tissue regeneration may offer the prospect of alternative preparations of thymic tissue. There are potential broader applications of this treatment outside congenital athymia.
RECENT FINDINGS: At the same time as further characterization of the cul

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic patches can be used to repair large congenital diaphragmatic hernia defects but may be associated with infection, recurrence, and thoracic deformity. Biosheets (collagenous connective tissue membranes) have been used in regenerative medicine. We evaluated the efficacy of Biosheets in a rabbit model.
METHODS: Biosheets were prepared by embedding silicone plates in dorsal subcutaneous pouches of rabbits for 4weeks. In group 1 (n=11), Gore-Tex® sheets (1.8×1.8cm) were implanted into a diaphragmatic defect. In group 2 (n=11), Seamdura®, a bioabsorbable artificial dural subs

Scaffolds are implants or injects, which are used to deliver cells, drugs, and genes into the body. Different forms of polymeric scaffolds for cell/drug delivery are available: (1) a typical three-dimensional porous matrix, (2) a nanofibrous matrix, (3) a thermosensitive sol-gel transition hydrogel, and (4) a porous microsphere. A scaffold provides a suitable substrate for cell attachment, cell proliferation, differentiated function, and cell migration. Scaffold matrices can be used to achieve drug delivery with high loading and efficiency to specific sites. Biomaterials used for fabrication o

Inflammatory periodontal diseases are a leading cause of tooth loss and are linked to multiple systemic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke. Reconstruction of the support and function of affected tooth-supporting tissues represents an important therapeutic endpoint for periodontal regenerative medicine. An improved understanding of periodontal biology coupled with current advances in scaffolding matrices has introduced novel treatments that use cell and gene therapy to enhance periodontal tissue reconstruction and its biomechanical integration. The principle of 'guided bone regeneration' was first described in 1988 on the basis of animal-experimental data. Six weeks after transmandibular defects had been created and protected by non-resorbable teflonmembranes, complete bone regeneration was found. The technique was based on the selective repopulation of the wound: every infiltration of cells outside the neighbouring bone tissue was prevented by the application of the membrane. Additional animal experiments showed that guided bone regeneration was a viable treatment option for local bone defects surrounding dental implants. Clinical p

Periodontal disease is one of the most common diagnoses in small animal veterinary medicine. This infectious disease of the periodontium is characterized by the inflammation and destruction of the supporting structures of teeth, including periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Traditional periodontal repair techniques make use of open flap debridement, application of graft materials, and membranes to prevent epithelial downgrowth and formation of a long junctional epithelium, which inhibits regeneration and true healing. These techniques have variable efficacy and are made more cha

Chronic periodontitis is a serious infectious and inflammatory oral disease of humans worldwide. Conventional treatment modalities are effective for controlling periodontal disease. However, the regeneration of damaged periodontal tissues remains a major challenge in clinical practice due to the complex structure of the periodontium. Stem cell-based regenerative approaches combined with the usage of emerging biomaterials are entering a new era in periodontal regeneration. The present review updates the current knowledge of periodontal ligament stem cell-based approaches for periodontal regener

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate histological changes in an animal model for bladder exstrophy and fetal repair of the bladder defect with a molecular-defined dual-layer collagen biomatrix to induce fetal bladder wall regeneration.
METHODS: In 12 fetal lambs the abdominal wall and bladder were opened by a midline incision at 79 days' gestation. In 6 of these lambs an uncorrected bladder exstrophy was created by suturing the edges of the opened bladder to the abdominal wall (group 1). The other 6 lambs served as a repair group, where a dual-layer collagen biomatrix was sutured into the bladder wall and

The objectives of this study were to observe hard tissue changes in guided bone regeneration (GBR) with intact periosteum and soft block deproteinised bovine bone mineral (DBBM), and evaluate whether the result of horizontal bone augmentation varied by initial peri-implant defect depth. Forty patients with a single missing tooth and contained peri-implant defect were categorised into three groups according to their presurgical defect depth (≤ 2, 2-4, and 4-6 mm). Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were collected and reconstructed preoperatively, postoperatively, and at six months' fol

Electrospinning can be used to mimic the architecture of an acellular nerve graft, combining microfibers for guidance, and pores for cellular infiltration. We made electrospun nerve guides, from polycaprolactone (PCL) or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), with aligned fibers along the insides of the channels and random fibers around them. We bridged a 10 mm rat sciatic nerve defect with the guides, and, in selected groups, added a cell transplant derived from autologous stromal vascular fraction (SVF). For control, we compared to hollow silicone tubes; or autologous nerve grafts. PCL nerve guides had

Aging influences peripheral nerve regeneration. Nevertheless, most basic research of bioabsorbable nerve conduits including commercial products have been performed in very young animals. Results from these studies may not provide information about axonal regeneration in aged tissue, because young nerve tissue holds sufficient endogenous potential for axonal regeneration. The clinical target age for nerve conduit application is most likely going to increase with a rapidly growing elderly population. In the present study, we examined axonal regeneration after sciatic nerve defects in aged and yo

Alveolar bone resorption following tooth extraction is not uncommon. The dimensions of the alveolar bone are of great importance from both esthetic and implant planning reasons. This paper reviews the rational of ridge preservation following tooth extraction in order to minimize bone loss. The different treatment modalities for that purpose will also be discussed. When extracting a tooth, the dental professional should consider performing a ridge preservation procedure according to the accepted indications. The knowledge of the various options as well as their pros and cones will help the clin

UNLABELLED: Clinicians are often confronted with changes in the anatomy of the local site following tooth extraction. Successful management of the extraction socket can be challenging, particularly in the aesthetic zone. Proper management is necessary to ensure that the implant used to support a prosthesis will remain stable. This article will recommend a classification system for various types of extraction sockets. A simple, noninvasive approach to the grafting and management of sockets when soft tissue is present but the buccal plate is compromised following tooth extraction will also be di
