Meta-analysis of functional subdivisions within human posteromedial cortex.

The posteromedial cortex (PMC)-comprising posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), retrosplenial cortex (RSC), and the precuneus (PrC)-is perhaps best known for its involvement in the default mode network. There is no consensus regarding the specific functions of PMC, however, and its component regions each exhibit distinct, but partially overlapping functional profiles. To date, there has been minimal effort to disentangle the functions of these regions. In the present study, we use Neurosynth ( http://neurosynth.org ) to conduct an unbiased meta-analysis of the PMC based on fMRI coactivation and se

7 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging of caudal anterior cingulate and posterior cingulate cortex atrophy in patients with trigeminal neuralgia.

The cingulate cortex (CC) is a brain region that plays a key role in pain processing, but CC abnormalities are not unclear in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The purpose of this study was to determine the central causal mechanisms of TN and the surrounding brain structure in healthy controls and patients with TN using 7 Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Whole-brain parcellation in gray matter volume and thickness was assessed in 15 patients with TN and 16 healthy controls matched for sex, age, and regional variability using T1-weighted imaging. Regions of interest (ROIs) wer

Ethanol facilitates socially evoked memory recall in mice by recruiting pain-sensitive anterior cingulate cortical neurons.

Alcohol is a traditional social-bonding reinforcer; however, the neural mechanism underlying ethanol-driven social behaviors remains elusive. Here, we report that ethanol facilitates observational fear response. Observer mice exhibited stronger defensive immobility while observing cagemates that received repetitive foot shocks if the observer mice had experienced a brief priming foot shock. This enhancement was associated with an observation-induced recruitment of subsets of anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) neurons in the observer mouse that were responsive to its own pain. The vicariously acti

Direct neurophysiological evidence for a role of the human anterior cingulate cortex in central command.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is still controversial. The ACC has been implicated in such diverse functions as cognition, arousal and emotion in addition to motor and autonomic control. Therefore the ACC is the ideal candidate to orchestrate cardiovascular performance in anticipation of perceived skeletal activity. The aim of this experiment was to investigate whether the ACC forms part of the neural network of central command whereby cardiovascular performance is governed by a top-down mechanism. METHODS & RESULTS: Direct local field potential (LFP) recordings

The impact of PICALM genetic variations on reserve capacity of posterior cingulate in AD continuum.

Phosphatidylinositolbinding clathrin assembly protein (PICALM) gene is one novel genetic player associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), based on recent genome wide association studies (GWAS). However, how it affects AD occurrence is still unknown. Brain reserve hypothesis highlights the tolerant capacities of brain as a passive means to fight against neurodegenerations. Here, we took the baseline volume and/or thickness of LOAD-associated brain regions as proxies of brain reserve capacities and investigated whether PICALM genetic variations can influence the baseline reserve cap

Isolated astasia manifested by acute infarct of the anterior corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus.

Astasia, the inability to stand and walk, in the absence of weakness or ataxia, is uncommon and unique. This syndrome is easy to misdiagnose as vestibulocerebellar disease. We report a patient with anterior callosal and cingulate infarction presenting as isolated astasia. A 65-year-old hypertensive man was admitted to our hospital with marked truncal instability. On neurological examination, he was unable to stand and walk independently. When asked to stand up from a sitting position, he had to grasp something nearby to propel himself upwards, and could not use his axial muscles. He collapsed

Abnormal Degree Centrality of Bilateral Putamen and Left Superior Frontal Gyrus in Schizophrenia with Auditory Hallucinations: A Resting-state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Dysconnectivity hypothesis of schizophrenia has been increasingly emphasized. Recent researches showed that this dysconnectivity might be related to occurrence of auditory hallucination (AH). However, there is still no consistent conclusion. This study aimed to explore intrinsic dysconnectivity pattern of whole-brain functional networks at voxel level in schizophrenic with AH. METHODS: Auditory hallucinated patients group (n = 42 APG), no hallucinated patients group (n = 42 NPG) and normal controls (n = 84 NCs) were analyzed by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Meditation experience is associated with differences in default mode network activity and connectivity.

Many philosophical and contemplative traditions teach that "living in the moment" increases happiness. However, the default mode of humans appears to be that of mind-wandering, which correlates with unhappiness, and with activation in a network of brain areas associated with self-referential processing. We investigated brain activity in experienced meditators and matched meditation-naive controls as they performed several different meditations (Concentration, Loving-Kindness, Choiceless Awareness). We found that the main nodes of the default-mode network (medial prefrontal and posterior cingul

Structural characteristics of neurons and macrogliocytes in interconnected regions of the mesoaccumbocingulate dopaminergic system in rats.

Studies in rats (n = 6) in normal conditions addressed the morphometric parameters of neurons and macrogliocytes in the interconnected anteromedial regions of the mesoaccumbocingulate (MAC) dopaminergic system, which is important for diagnosing and identifying the morphogenesis of addiction states. A spatial model of the system was constructed which took into account the mean distance of frontal sections from the frontal pole; the densities of neurons and macrogliocytes were assessed in the central part of the paranigral nucleus of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the compact zone of the s

[Peripheral alexias].

The brain lesions could lead to impairments of the comprehension and production of written language. This acquired inability is named alexia. It is a significant problem for neurologists and ophthalmologists. Our study presents a classification of the alexias, whose pathology was describe first by Dejerine (1891; 1892). There are two varieties of alexias: central alexias and peripheral alexias (especially agnozic alexia and attentional alexia). In agnozic alexia, the patient cannot read, but can write, understand and speak. It results from a type of cerebral disconnection in which the angular

Functional MRI changes during panic anticipation and imagery exposure.

While undergoing fMRI, six patients with DSM IV diagnosis of panic disorder and six normal controls performed directed imagery of neutral, moderate and high anxiety situations based on an individually determined behavioral hierarchy. Brain activity was compared during high vs neutral anxiety blocks for each group of subjects using SPM99b. Panic patients showed increased activity in inferior frontal cortex, hippocampus and throughout the cingulate both anterior and posterior, extending into the orbitofrontal cortex and encompassing both hemispheres. These areas may constitute the important circ

Inversion of the hemispheric laterality of the anterior cingulate gyrus in schizophrenics.

The anterior cingulate gyrus (acg) is involved in mechanisms of attention and emotion, where the right hemisphere is considered to be dominant. One of the models for neuropsychological dysfunction in schizophrenia suggests an impairment in the balance of lateralized functions. Fourteen adult human female brains, having no macroscopic lesions, were used in this study. Seven brains came from female patients with clinical diagnoses of residual schizophrenia (DSM-III-R; APA 1987). Seven female brains were used as controls. Thirteen male brains were also studied, with the sole purpose of establishi

Organization of cingulo-ponto-cerebellar connections in the cat.

This study deals with three different aspects of the organization of connections from the cingulate gyrus to the cerebellum. (1) With the use of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase as a retrograde tracer, the distribution of cingulate neurons projecting to the pontine nuclei was studied. Retrogradely labeled cells were found in layer 5 in all parts of the cingulate gyrus. Average densities of cingulo-pontine cells were similar in the different cytoarchitectonic subdivisions, although some density gradients were observed. The projection was found to be remarkably strong. Average densit

Claustroneocortical projections studied in the cat by means of multiple retrograde fluorescent tracing.

The topographical interrelations of claustroneocortical cells and their degree of divergent collateralization were investigated in cat by means of retrograde fluorescent double labeling. The tracers Fast Blue (FB) and Nuclear Yellow (NY) were injected in several combinations in two different cortical fields. FB-labeled and NY-labeled cells were found in all cases in the insular portion of the ipsilateral claustrum (CII). The distributions of labeled cells confirmed the organization reported in previous studies. In some cases the two labeled cell populations were segregated in different parts o

Top-down and Bottom-up Regulated Auditory Phantom Perception.

Auditory phantom percepts such as tinnitus are associated with auditory deafferentation. The idea is that auditory deafferentation limits the amount of information the brain can acquire to make sense of the world. Because of this, auditory deafferentation increases the uncertainty of the auditory environment. To minimize uncertainty, the deafferented brain will attempt to obtain or fill in the missing information. A proposed multiphase compensation model suggests two distinct types of bottom-up related tinnitus: an auditory cortex related tinnitus and a parahippocampal cortex related tinnitus.

Maturation of the limbic system revealed by MR FLAIR imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cortical signal intensity (SI) of the limbic system in adults is known to be higher than in neocortical structures, but time-related changes in SI during childhood have not been described. OBJECTIVE: To detect maturation-related SI changes within the limbic system using a fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR sequence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty children (10 boys, 10 girls; age 3.5-18 years, mean 11.2 years) with no neurological abnormality and normal MR imaging examination were retrospectively selected. On two coronal FLAIR slices, ten regions of interest (ROI) with

Smaller regional volumes of brain gray and white matter demonstrated in breast cancer survivors exposed to adjuvant chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown cognitive impairment in breast cancer survivors who were exposed to adjuvant chemotherapy. Neural damage by chemotherapy might have played some part in these findings. The current study explored the regional brain volume difference between breast cancer survivors exposed to adjuvant chemotherapy (C+) and those unexposed (C-). METHODS: High-resolution 1.5-tesla brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) databases of breast cancer survivors and healthy controls were used. Brain images were preprocessed for optimal voxel-based morphometry. Comparisons of gray

Neural and computational mechanisms of effort under the pressure of a deadline.

Deadlines fundamentally shape motivation. Research examining effort-based choices finds effort is an avoided cost. However, this overlooks how making progress on longer-term goals to be reached before deadlines motivate people to exert high effort for little immediate reward. Here, we test a framework where motivation depends on deadline pressure (work remaining / time remaining). Across four studies we use computational modelling examining decisions when physical effort makes progress on goals with deadlines. In support of the hypotheses, deadline pressure significantly impacts decision-makin
