We analyzed the total hand length (HL) and length of noncarpal bones (NCL) in 50 Japanese patients with Ullrich-Turner syndrome (UTS) and in 443 other patients with short stature used as controls. In each patient group we calculated relative HL (RHL= HL/height) and relative NCL (RNCL= NCL/height). UTS patients had significantly greater RHL than controls. The greater RHL in UTS patients is mainly due to their longer, short tubular bones. The RHL is not affected by ages and karyotypes of UTS patients or growth hormone treatments given to them. We conclude that relatively longer hands are a commo

Accessory bones, variants, and coalitions are not uncommon at the hand-wrist region. They are often overlooked because they are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on imaging. However, they may sometimes present as a (painful) swelling or mimic a (sequel of a) fracture. Other symptoms may be attributed to impingement and exercise-related pain. Thorough knowledge of the anatomy, systematic imaging analysis, and the awareness of their existence are the clues to a correct identification. Plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) play a pivotal role in the correct diagnosis. I

A case of essential carpal osteolysis is reported. The morphological appearance of the hands is described. They showed ulnar deviation; they were short and pudgy, the carpus and metacarpus being almost absent. The fingers were normal, but the left thumb was atrophic. Radiographies of the left hand showed an almost complete disappearance of the carpus and severe irregularities of the ulna and radius. Aetiology, treatment and prognosis are briefly discussed.

Tuberculous dactylitis is a distinctly uncommon, yet well recognized form of tuberculosis involving the small bones of the hand or foot. It occurs in young children in endemic areas under 5 years of age. Tuberculosis of the short tubular bones like phalanges, metacarpals or metatarsals is quite uncommon beyond 6 years of age, once the epiphyseal centers are well established. The radiographic features of cystic expansion have led to the name "Spina Ventosa" for tuberculous dactylitis of the short bones. Scrofuloderma is a mycobacterial infection affecting children and young adults, representing

The vascular anatomy of the dorsal aspect of the hand is variable. Nevertheless the presence of the first and the second dorsal metacarpal artery (DMA) is constant. DMA3 and 4 are more variable. The anatomical study presented demonstrates the segmental vascularization of the metacarpal bones and the possibility of harvesting metacarpal bone flaps. The reliability of such a flap decreases from the second to the fifth metacarpal bone regarding the frequency of presence of the DMAs. The authors describe six new vascularized bone flaps from the third and the fourth metacarpal bones pedicled on the

The radiographic follow-up of a patient with Proteus syndrome is presented. Review of radiographs obtained at 3 years 10 months, 10 years, and 17 years 8 months indicated that the rate of growth in length of the oversized tubular bones of the hands was similar to that of the normal bones of the same hand. This observation supports the view that the primary lesion occurs in the early embryonic period, when the limb bud mesenchyme cells condense and cartilage differentiates producing oversized cartilage anlages, rather than being a defect of bone cell-mediated apposition and modelling processes

The collection of skeletal material at the University of Maryland School of Medicine now includes a small sample of scapulae and long bones of the upper extremities taken from cadavers of known handedness. This sample has been used to begin studies for determining the accuracy currently used for diagnosing handedness. Measurements have been taken of the deflection angle that results from dorsal inclination of the glenoid fossa, humeral length and head diameter bicondylar width, and radial and ulnar lengths. A radiohumeral index and the total combined length of the long bones for each extremity

Hand injuries contribute a considerable workload for any individual accident and emergency department. Not many studies are found in the Indian literature as far as the epidemiology of hand fractures is concerned. A prospective survey of the medical charts of all 10,977 patients attending the accident and emergency department of the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, from August 1, 2004, to July 31, 2006 was performed. Of these, 2,836 sustained one or more fractures, and hand fractures accounted for 5.4% of all fractures. This study compared the prevalence of hand fractures with that of all fr

In cases of severe segmental injury across the hand and wrist, but one or other fingers are still in peak condition, the fingers can be selected for replantation at the forearm bones to restore pinch function. Here we reported an unusual case with a severe crush-avulsion amputated injury to the right hand caused by a machine accident. We conducted hand reconstruction using heterotopic replantation of the amputated index and little fingers. During 19 months follow-up, the bone union healed well with satisfactory outcome. The interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joint of the fingers after the

BACKGROUND: Adipofascial flaps used in reconstruction of various tissue defects have been described by many authors and have several advantages.
METHODS: A clinical report of an extensive dorsal hand traumatic soft tissue injury where a new ultrathin oblique volar-to-dorsal adipofascial reverse turnover flap based on radial artery distal perforators is presented. Its width-to-length ratio was 1:4 (the longest ever reported), designed to cover primary free tendon grafts and exposed metacarpal bones.
RESULTS: The technique has provided very good hand function and cosmetic outcome, minimum dono

UNLABELLED: Complex hand injuries are associated with serious consequences including long period off-work, permanent disability, inability to return to original profession or to work at all. As these injuries are common, they create considerable economical consequences and, therefore, it is desirable their treatment would be as perfect as possible to reduce potential loss of function. The aim of the study was analysis of the structure of complex, multi-structural hand injuries and evaluation of the outcomes of the treatment of these injuries in both medical (recovery of function) and economica

We report a rare case of idiopathic, isolated, and bilaterally symmetrical brachymetacarpia of the fifth metacarpal bones in a 60-year-old woman followed for seropositive rheumatoid arthritis. Despite the radiographic anomaly, the patient remained asymptomatic and had normal hand function. Extensive investigations ruled out syndromic or metabolic causes. This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing rare skeletal variants in rheumatologic evaluations.

The carpal bones are deeply convex anteriorly. This bony gutter is converted by the flexor retinaculum into a tube - the carpal tunnel, which conveys the median nerve, together with the long flexor tendons of the fingers and thumb, into the hand. It is of special interest to the surgeon because it is the site of a common nerve entrapment, the carpal tunnel syndrome.

Incidence of arthrosis in the region of the hand-joint and carpal bones has proved to be substantially higher than generally assumed. This was established by X-ray analysis in more than 80 per cent of all cases investigated. The changes thus recorded were found to be related to sex and age. Studies were conducted into the relationship between arthrosis and previous trauma.

Three cases of a complex malformation of the hand involving syndactyly, polydactyly, and hypoplastic triphalangeal thumb are presented. In all three patients, six metacarpal bones and hypoplasticity of the thenar muscles were present. In one patient, both hands, except the most radial digits of the left hand, were completely fused by soft webs as reported by Haas and Ofodile. In two other patients, the extent of the webs differed from Haas's case, but one of them was similar to Ofodile's first case. In all instances the supernumerary digit had a triphalangeal configuration and the thenar muscl

The hand is very exposed to injuries in the daily man's work. The multiple functions of the hand are based on vitality, sensibility, motor function and stability. In severe hand injuries the functional results of the repair are often very poor. In a complex injury of the hand we are faced with the damage of the soft tissue and bone and the loss of vitality and function of the hand. The cause of hand injuries are mainly a crush trauma or the rotating saw. Basically, we recommend an extended primary repair. After the radical debridement we have to reconstruct the damaged structures. We start doi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Upper limb injuries are a common occurrence in the pediatric demographic, particularly wrist injuries, which constitute a noteworthy subset. Fractures involving the forearm, wrist, and phalanges are recurrent reasons prompting visits to emergency departments. This investigation endeavors to offer a comprehensive insight into hand and forearm fractures within the pediatric cohort, delineating data across various age groups, gender distributions, and fracture location.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved data from the reports of 834 post-traumatic wrist X-ray e

Background Axial dislocations of the trapezoid are rare, high-energy injuries. We present an unusual case of isolated dorsal dislocation of the trapezoid and index metacarpal at the scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal (STT) joint due to steering wheel injury. Case Description A 56-year-old man presented to our office with right hand pain for 10 days after a head-on motor vehicle accident (MVA) in which he suffered an axial load injury to his hand on the steering wheel. X-ray images were reported as unremarkable. Further workup with computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an isolated dorsal dislocation of

In 100 children (17 girls, 83 boys) with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, the average chronological age, pelvis bone age, and hand-wrist bone age were significantly different for the girls (8.2, 6.9, and 7.0 years, respectively; p < 0.05) and the boys (8.2, 7.4, and 5.9 years, respectively; p < 0.05). For the girls, the chronological age was greater than the pelvis bone age and the hand-wrist bone age (p < 0.05); there was no difference between the pelvis and hand-wrist bone age. For the boys, the chronological age was greater than the pelvis bone age and the hand-wrist bone age (p < 0.05); the pel

Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica - an epiphyseal developmental disturbance of the skeleton - is combined with exostose-like, tumor-simulating cartilaginous hypertrophy of bone tissue, mainly located at the epiphyses of the lower extremities and at the tarsal bones. In the case of multiple involvement the unilateral type prevails (hemimele type); within the epiphyses it is mostly the medial part which is undergoing changes. Rare sites are patella, head of the hip bone, shoulder joint, carpalia, more commonly affected are talus as well as other tarsal bones, distal femoral epiphysis and proxima
