Alterations in amino acid status in cats with feline dysautonomia.

Feline dysautonomia (FD) is a multiple system neuropathy of unknown aetiology. An apparently identical disease occurs in horses (equine grass sickness, EGS), dogs, rabbits, hares, sheep, alpacas and llamas. Horses with acute EGS have a marked reduction in plasma concentrations of the sulphur amino acids (SAA) cyst(e)ine and methionine, which may reflect exposure to a neurotoxic xenobiotic. The aim of this study was to determine whether FD cats have alterations in amino acid profiles similar to those of EGS horses. Amino acids were quantified in plasma/serum from 14 FD cats, 5 healthy in-contac…

Brucella suis biovar 2 isolations from cattle in Poland.

Bovine brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the Brucella genus, primarily by B. abortus, less frequently by B. meliten … g to the B. suis biovar 2. In Poland, as in many other European countries, wildlife (wild boars and hares) constitutes a huge reservoir of the said biovar. The results of the presented research indicate that B. suis biovar 2 can easily infect cattle, and undoubtedly plays a role in the epidemiology and control of bovine brucellosis.

Existential homecoming when facing death: A meta-ethnography of the end-of-life experiences of patients with a life-threatening illness.

BACKGROUND: Serious illness influences existential well-being. Dwelling is an existential dimension of well-being when coming to terms with one's situation, yet there is limited knowledge about how this may be achieved and fostered in clinical practice. AIM: To interpret and synthesise qualitative research findings about patients' experiences facing death at the end of life. DESIGN: A meta-ethnography based on Noblit and Hare's seven-phase process was conducted. DATA SOURCES: CINAHL, Ovid Medline, APA PsycInfo, and Embase, were searched. Qualitative interview studies published between 2014

Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD): Factor structure and convergent discriminant validity in 14- to 19-year-old middle-to-upper-income adolescents.

The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD; Salekin & Hare, 2016) self-report scale measures psychopathic traits and conduct disorder in children and adolescents. The present study tested the psychometric properties of the PSCD in a sample of middle-to-upper-income adolescents (N = 286, Mage = 15.40; SD = 1.21). Specifically, we tested the factor structure (one-, two-, three-, and four-factor models), convergent and discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity of the PSCD. As expected, we found that a four-factor PSCD model best fit the data. In addition, we found that the PSC

First case of Brucella suis biovar 1 infection in a dog in Switzerland.

As one of the most common zoonoses globally, brucellosis threatens not only animals but also humans with Brucella (B.) melitensis, B. abortus and B. suis biovar 1&3, being more virulent for humans than B. canis, B. ovis and B. suis biovar 2. Canine brucellosis is caused mainly by B. canis, however, B. suis infections in dogs have been reported sporadically in Europe and more frequently in Australia. B. suis infection in dogs is mainly associated with hunting or wild-animal exposure and rarely with consumption of commercial raw meat products. In Switzerland, B. canis is sporadically diagnosed i

Emergency nurses and the care of people who have self-harmed: A meta-ethnography.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm is a significant public health issue and a key focus of health policies globally. Emergency departments (EDs) often see self-harm cases, with emergency nurses playing a crucial role. However, care is inconsistent and substandard due to a lack of evidence-based practices and mixed attitudes among nurses. OBJECTIVE: To understand the social context of emergency nurses' practice with self-harm patients by synthesising qualitative research findings. METHOD: Noblit and Hare's meta-ethnography method was used to synthesise qualitative studies. Three databases (PsychINFO, CINA

Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD): Further validation of the parent-report version in a nationally representative U.S. sample of 10- to 17-year-olds.

The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD; Salekin & Hare, 2016) is a new self-report and informant measure designed to assess psychopathic characteristic domains along with symptoms of conduct disorder in youth. Previous factor analytic studies on the PSCD have found that the items are accounted for by a four-factor model reflecting grandiose-manipulative, callous-unemotional, daring-impulsive, and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms. The present study examined the factor structure, psychometric properties, and criterion-related validity of the parent-report version of the PSCD (PSCD-P) i

Tobacco use, smoking identities and pathways into and out of smoking among young adults: a meta-ethnography.

BACKGROUND: This meta-ethnography investigates how young adults describe their tobacco use, smoking identities and pathways into and out of regular smoking, to inform future smoking prevention and harm reduction interventions. METHODS: Eight databases were systematically searched using keywords and indexed terms. Studies were included if they presented qualitative data from young adults aged 16-25 reporting smoking histories and/or smoking identities from countries culturally similar to the UK. A systematic and rigorous meta-ethnographic approach was employed, consistent with Noblit and Hare'

Genomic Evaluation of the Genus Coltivirus Indicates Genetic Diversity among Colorado Tick Fever Virus Strains and Demarcation of a New Species.

The type species of the genus Coltivirus, Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV), was discovered in 1943 and is the most common tick-borne viral infection in the Western US. Despite its long history, very little is known about the molecular diversity of viruses classified within the species Colorado tick fever coltivirus. Previous studies have suggested genetic variants and potential serotypes of CTFV, but limited genetic sequence information is available for CTFV strains. To address this knowledge gap, we report herein the full-length genomes of five strains of CTFV, including Salmon River virus an

Increased risk of endemic mosquito-borne diseases in Canada due to climate change.

There are currently over 80 species of mosquito endemic in Canada-although only a few of these carry pathogens that can cause disease in humans. West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus and the California serogroup viruses (including the Jamestown Canyon and snowshoe hare viruses) are mosquito-borne viruses that have been found to cause human infections in North America, including in Canada. Over the last 20 years, the incidence of most of these endemic mosquito-borne diseases (MBD) has increased approximately 10% in Canada, due in large part to climate change. It is anticipated that

Social skills and psychopathic traits in maltreated adolescents.

Child maltreatment has frequently been associated with impaired social skills and antisocial features, but there are still controversies about the effect of each type of maltreatment on social behaviour. The aim of this study was to compare the social functioning and psychopathic traits of maltreated adolescents (MTA) with a control group (CG) and to investigate what types of maltreatments and social skills were associated with psychopathic traits in both groups. The types and intensity of maltreatment were evaluated through the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) in 107 adolescents, divided

Isolation and characterization of a California encephalitis serogroup orthobunyavirus from Finnish mosquitoes.

The mosquito-borne California encephalitis serogroup viruses of the genus Orthobunyavirus (family Bunyaviridae) include several causative agents of encephalitis in humans. Until recently, Inkoo virus (INKV) was the only orthobunyavirus isolated in Finland, showing high seroprevalence in the population. In this study, we recovered five orthobunyavirus isolates from mosquitoes collected in eastern Finland in the early autumns of 2007 and 2008 by inoculation of Vero cells. The isolates were determined by S, M and L segment sequences to represent the California encephalitis virus species but disti

An exploration of psychopathy in self-report measures among juvenile sex offenders.

Researchers have indicated that adult psychopathy often originates in childhood or adolescence. It has also been established that psychopathic traits are linked to disruptive behavior, criminality, and violence. As knowledge about psychopathy and its manifestations in juvenile sex offender populations remains limited, several instruments have been developed in an effort to measure the construct. In this study, we assessed how the relationship of diverse scales of psychopathy related to characteristics of sexual aggression, and determined which scales were most correlated to sexual and nonsexua

Predictive validity of callous-unemotional traits measured in early adolescence with respect to multiple antisocial outcomes.

This study investigated the predictive validity of youth callous-unemotional (CU) traits, as measured in early adolescence (Grade 7) by the Antisocial Process Screening Device (APSD; Frick & Hare, 2001), in a longitudinal sample (N = 754). Antisocial outcomes, assessed in adolescence and early adulthood, included self-reported general delinquency from 7th grade through 2 years post-high school, self-reported serious crimes through 2 years post-high school, juvenile and adult arrest records through 1 year post-high school, and antisocial personality disorder symptoms and diagnosis at 2 years po

Psychopathic heroin addicts are not uniformly impaired across neurocognitive domains of impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a hallmark characteristic of drug addiction and a prominent feature of externalizing disorders such as psychopathy that are commonly comorbid with drug addiction. In a previous study (Vassileva et al., 2007) we have shown that psychopathic heroin addicts evidence more impulsive decision-making on the Iowa Gambling Task relative to non-psychopathic heroin addicts. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether the observed impulse-control deficits in psychopathic heroin addicts would generalize to other neurocognitive domains of impulsivity, such as delay di

Population-based study of lymphoma in Germany: rationale, study design and first results.

A multi-centre, population-based case-control study of lymphoma among adults was conducted in Germany from 1999-2003. The study comprised 700 incident cases (Hodgkin lymphomas and non Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL) in the age range 18-80 years and 700 age-, sex- and area-matched controls obtained from population registries. Diagnosis was based on the REAL/WHO classification. Information on demographic characteristics, lifestyle, medical history and occupation was obtained by in-person interviews. Each participant was asked for a 24 ml blood sample. First results are focused on basic demographic char

Ehrlichiae and ehrlichial diseases in china.

The various ticks collected from different areas of China were examined for the existence of ehrlichial agents by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with genus- or species-specific primers designed on the basis of ehrlichial 16S rRNA genes and sequence analyses. In southern China, E. chaffeensis was detected in Amblyomma testudinarium ticks from infested cattle, Haemaphysalis yeni ticks from hare, and Ixodes ovatus ticks from Muntiacus reevesi. E. canis was identified in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from dogs and Boophilus microplus ticks from goats. A new species of the genus Ehrlichia, closel

Antagonists of the human TSH receptor: in vitro and in vivo studies of their functional and immunological effects.

We have developed and characterized a prototype of a TSH receptor antagonist derived from the hCG molecule. This may be used to block human TSH receptor both functionally and immunologically, particularly in the study of Graves' disease. Our hCG derived TSH receptor blocker compares favorably with other substances (e.g. deglycosylated forms of TSH, synthetic peptides of the alpha or beta subunit of TSH) that hare been reported to inhibit bTSH binding or bTSH-stimulated cAMP response (Joshi et al., 1981; Morris et al., 1988). It has a much higher affinity for human TSH receptor than the TSH sub

Sarcoptic mange in Swedish wildlife.

Mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. vulpes appeared among red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Scandinavia (south-west Finland) for the first time in this century in 1967. The disease was most probably introduced by foxes crossing the Gulf of Finland from Estonia. The mange epizootic spread northwards through Finland and reached Sweden in late 1975, when mangy foxes appeared in the northern part of the country. In 1984, mange was observed in most parts of Sweden. The disease was observed to spread rapidly in boreal areas, whereas it spread more slowly in agricultural areas. Mortality due to mange w
