How Shell Add-On Products Influence Varsity Football Helmet Performance?

PURPOSE: The study purpose was to investigate the laboratory-based performance of three commercially available shell add-on products under varsity-level impact conditions. METHODS: Pendulum impact tests were conducted at multiple locations (front, front boss, rear, side) and speeds (3.1, 4.9, 6.4 m/s) using two helmet models. Tests were performed with a single add-on configuration for baseline comparisons and a double add-on configuration to simulate collisions with both players wearing shell add-ons. A linear mixed-effect model was used to evaluate peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotati

Efficacy of Molding Helmet Therapy following Suturectomy for Craniosynostosis: A Single-center, Retrospective Analysis in Japan.

Craniosynostosis limits normal cranial growth, significantly affecting the growth and development of children. This increase in intracranial pressure results in significant cosmetic and functional losses. This study investigated the efficacy of combining molding helmets with suturectomy for craniosynostosis. Patients who underwent suturectomy and molding helmet therapy for craniosynostosis at a single institution between 2017 and 2024 were included. Changes in cephalic index (CI) and cranial vault asymmetry index (CVAI) were analyzed. A total of 14 patients (12 males, 2 females) were included,

Do motorcycle helmets reduce road traffic injuries, hospitalizations and mortalities in low and lower-middle income countries in Africa? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Studies in Africa have examined the association between helmet use and injury prevention, however, there has been no systematic review to synthesize the literature within an African context nor has there been any meta-analysis examining the effect of helmet use on injury prevention. METHODS: The review was performed in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute for Systematic Reviews. Articles were searched using several databases (e.g. CINAHL, OVID Medline) and select gray literature (e.g. TRID) sources. Articles were included if they were quantitative studies published in Engli

Electric scooters: a quick way to get to the emergency department?

Introduction Electric scooters (e-scooters) are rife but are yet to be legalised in the UK. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether there had been an increase in the number of e-scooter injuries referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) service at our unit. We present here what is, to our knowledge, the largest dataset regarding e-scooter-related injuries in the UK.Method A double cohort study in which details of patients sustaining e-scooter-related injuries that were referred to the OMFS department were collected, prospectively, for a 16-week period in 2020 (investigatio

Demographics of Positional Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly; Risk Factors and Treatment.

In the last 3 decades, the incidence of positional cranial deformations in infants, such as positional plagiocephaly and positional brachycephaly, has increased. The deviating shape often causes parental concern for the later psychosocial wellbeing of the child. Treatment options are nonoperative, varying from positional change to helmet therapy, of which the effect has often been debated. Multiple risk factors have been associated with an increased risk on the development of these deformations. The goal of this study was to assess the impact of known risk factors on the type and severity of r

Head and Spinal Injuries in Equestrian Sports: Update on Epidemiology, Clinical Outcomes, and Injury Prevention.

Equestrian sports represent a variety of activities involving a horse and rider. Due to the unpredictable nature of horses, their height, and potential high speeds involved, equestrian athletes are at risk of head and spinal injuries. This review describes the epidemiology, injury mechanisms, and risk factors for equestrian sports-related head and spinal injuries. Traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, are more common than spinal injuries. Both injury types are most commonly related to a rider fall from a horse. Spinal injuries are less common but are associated with potentially sign

Laboratory and On-field Data Collected by a Head Impact Monitoring Mouthguard.

Although concussion continues to be a major source of acute and chronic injury in automotive, athletic and military arenas, concussion injury mechanisms and risk functions are ill-defined. This lack of definition has hindered efforts to develop standardized concussion monitoring, safety testing and protective countermeasures. Recent research has provided evidence of the role of repetitive head impact exposure as a predisposing factor for the onset of concussion using developed instrumented helmets and mouthguards. To overcome this knowledge gap, we have developed, tested and deployed a head imp

Evaluation of a novel bicycle helmet concept in oblique impact testing.

BACKGROUND: A novel bicycle helmet concept has been developed to mitigate rotational head acceleration, which is a predominant mechanism of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This WAVECEL concept employs a collapsible cellular structure that is recessed within the helmet to provide a rotational suspension. This cellular concept differs from other bicycle helmet technologies for mitigation of rotational head acceleration, such as the commercially available Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) technology which employs a slip liner to permit sliding between the helmet and the head during

Patterns of injury among motorized two-wheeler pillion riders in New Delhi, India.

BACKGROUND: Motorized two-wheelers (MTWs) such as scooters and motorcycles place drivers and passengers at significant risk of injury and death in the event of a road traffic accident. In India, where road traffic is poorly regulated and consists of vehicles ranging from semitrucks to animal carts, the MTW pillion rider (backseat passenger) is particularly vulnerable. Annually, approximately 140,000 Indians are injured or killed in MTW road traffic accidents. In 2011, the city of New Delhi renewed a mandatory helmet use exemption for its 8 million women. We sought to identify the patterns of i
