Herpes-associated erythema multiforme can be controlled by continuous suppressive treatment with oral acyclovir. Erythema multiforme is not prevented if oral acyclovir is administered after a herpes simplex recurrence is evident and it is of no value after erythema multiforme has occurred. Two young children with unilateral photophobia, redness, blepharospasm and corneal epithelial defects unresponsive to conservative therapy were seen between December 1982 and June 1983. Herpes simplex virus was established as the causal agent in both cases, only after the children had been examined under general anesthesia and appropriate cultures obtained. The difficulties in diagnosing herpetic keratitis in children and the treatment and long-term prognosis are discussed.

Therapeutically unresponsive erosive or ulcerative lesions caused by the herpes simplex virus developed in five patients with advanced cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The chronic progressive character of the herpetic infection probably was the consequence of immunosuppression resulting from advanced lymphoma or its treatment. Herpes simplex infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous ulcerations in patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas.

The incidence of viral warts, recurrent herpes simplex and herpes zoster has been assessed in a group of patients with possible secondary immune deficiency states and compared to a control group. Patients with cell-mediated immune deficiency appear to be more prone to warts and zoster infection as compared to patients with humoral immune deficiency.
