[Overview of the biological etiology of transsexualism].

Gender identity disorder, or transsexualism as it is more commonly known, is a highly complex clinical entity. The general belief among behavioural scientists and physicians is that transsexualism is an identifiable and incapacitating disease which can be diagnosed and successfully treated by reassignment surgery. Although the exact etiology of gender identity disorder is unknown, several environmental, genetic and anatomical theories have been described. The reviewers draw attention to the possible genetic, hormonal, immunological and anatomical causes. An attempt is made to point out the fut

Population differences in finger-length ratios: ethnicity or latitude?

The relative length of the second and fourth fingers (the 2D:4D ratio) has been taken to be an indicator of prenatal exposure to testosterone, and hence possibly relevant to sexual orientation and other sex-differentiated behaviors. Studies have reported a difference in this ratio between Caucasian males in Britain and in the U.S.: higher average 2D:4D ratios were obtained in Britain. This raises the question of whether differences among different Caucasian gene pools were responsible or whether some environmental variable associated with latitude might be involved (e.g., exposure to sunlight

Testing bias: The hidden influence of race, gender, and identity in medical assessment.

Implicit bias in medical education has been documented, but its influence on standardized assessments remains underexplored. This study examines whether patient demographic descriptors in clinical vignettes impact examinee multiple-choice question answer choice selection and clinical decision-making. A randomized, controlled survey was conducted among third- and fourth-year medical students and first-year residents. Participants (N = 376) answered clinical vignette multiple-choice questions in either a "standard group" (without demographic descriptors) or a "demographic group" (identical quest

HCV incidence in people with HIV in southwest China: A retrospective cohort study (2004-2023).

INTRODUCTION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are global public health concerns. Little research has been conducted on HCV incidence in people with HIV (PWH). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study to investigate HCV incidence and associated factors in PWH. HCV-negative PWH registered in national HIV databases were enrolled and followed up from 2004 to 2023. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to identify factors associated with HCV infections. RESULTS: The study followed 50 245 HCV-negative PWH, totaling 272 979.3 person-years (PYs

Conjugal visitation rights, privileges and standards of provision inside European prisons: A socio-legal study of extant literature.

Conjugal visits in prisons remain controversial, with the bulk of literature concentrated in the United States. A socio-legal study mapped and described conjugal visitation rights and provision in prisons in the Council of Europe region, where over half a million are detained. A systematic search and socio-legal assessment of empirical literature, Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) country missions, and European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence was conducted. No date restriction was applied. Despite Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights not guaranteeing a right for

Heterogeneity in the Prevalence of High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Infection in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Negative and Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. We assessed (i) the prevalence of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection and associated factors, and (ii) the prevalence of vaccine-preventable HPV infections in MSM in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Togo. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017-2018 among MSM ≥18 years old followed in community-based clinics. HPV infection was investigated in oral and anal samples using the e-BRID system. Factors associated with HR-HPV infection were identified using multivariate logistic re

An epidemiological study of HIV-infections in Frankfurt/Main and other major cities in Germany.

Epidemiological studies can help to understand the effects of medical treatment of HIV infections. Accordingly, this study was designed to discuss the most important parameters in Frankfurt/Main and other big German cities from 1984 to 2000. The number of HIV tests performed by Frankfurt's Virology has been decreasing continually since 1991. A decrease of new infections in men could be registered, whereas the number of HIV infected women rose. From 1985 to 2000 an annual mean value of 478 HIV infected men and 121 HIV infected women was registered in Frankfurt. The gender proportion was followe

Human papillomavirus-associated carcinomas in Hawaii and the mainland U.S.

BACKGROUND: To the authors' knowledge, human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated carcinomas in Hawaii have not been studied in detail. METHODS: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data (from 1973-1996) were used to study rate of incidence patterns of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the uterine cervix, vulva/vagina, anus, penis, and palatine tonsils among Asian/Pacific Islanders and whites in Hawaii and among whites in the U.S. in general. RESULTS: With the exception of invasive cervical SCC, male and female Asian/Pacific Islanders in Hawaii had considerably lower incidence rates of HP

[Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteremia and HIV infection. Retrospective study of 41 episodes in 30 patients].

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary infections and bacteraemia, essentially due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, are frequently reported in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We retrospectively analyzed episodes of bacteraemia in HIV-infected patients to determine whether supplementary risk factors could be ascertained and whether it would be advisable to propose vaccination. METHODS: From June 1986 to February 1992, 41 episodes of bacteraemia in 30 HIV-infected patients were observed in 7 different wards. Data on age, sex, risk group, Centers for Disease

In situ hybridization to detect Epstein-Barr virus DNA in oral tissues of HIV-infected patients.

Thirty biopsies of oral mucosal lesions and normal oral mucosa were obtained from 26 HIV-seropositive individuals and studied for virus infections with Epstein-Barr virus-specific DNA probes (EBV). In situ DNA hybridization was carried out on frozen and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Specifically bound biotinylated virus probes were detected with the streptavidin-gold-silver technique and visualized by standard and interference reflection microscopy. In 9/30 biopsies, EBV DNA was clearly demonstrated in the upper two thirds of oral epithelia. This finding corresponded to peculiar c
