Neuronal control of breathing: sex and stress hormones.

There is a growing public awareness that hormones can have a significant impact on most biological systems, including the control of breathing. This review will focus on the actions of two broad classes of hormones on the neuronal control of breathing: sex hormones and stress hormones. The majority of these hormones are steroids; a striking feature is that both groups are derived from cholesterol. Stress hormones also include many peptides which are produced primarily within the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) and secreted into the brain or into the circulatory system. In thi…

Sex hormones and primary headaches other than migraine.

The relation between sex hormones and migraine has been examined in a series of studies, leading to the definitions of pure menstrual migraine and menstrually-related migraine. The relation between sex hormones and other types of primary headache has been studied less extensively, but there is at least some evidence that hormones in general, and menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause in particular, also impact these disorders. This article reviews the available literature on changes of tension-type headache, cluster headache, other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias, and hemicrania continua duri…

Gonadal hormones and cognitive aging: a midlife perspective.

Gonadal steroids affect a variety of brain processes. Cognitive consequences of hormonal changes associated with menopause are of scientific interest and of relevance to public health. Natural menopause is a normal physiological process that can only be directly studied through observational research. Similarly, surgical menopause in humans is rarely directly amenable to experimental research. Causality with respect to cognitive outcomes is, therefore, difficult to infer. Cross-sectional and longitudinal findings from the Melbourne Women's Midlife Health Project, the Study of Women's Health Ac

Thyroid hormones affect plasma ghrelin and obestatin levels.

Using radioimmunoassay, the effects of thyroid hormones on plasma total ghrelin (Gh) and obestatin (Ob) concentrations were evaluated in thyrotoxic patients with an excess of thyroid hormones and in hypothyroid patients lacking endogenous thyroid hormones. 24 patients with thyrotoxicosis, 25 hypothyroid patents after total thyreoidectomy performed due to thyroid cancer, and 17 control subjects were examined. Compared with the controls, the ghrelin and obestatin were elevated in hypothyroidism, while they were decreased in thyrotoxicosis. The plasma Gh and Ob levels differ depending on the thyr…

Emerging roles for calcium-regulating hormones beyond osteolysis.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH), the active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], and PTH-related peptide (PTHrP), the mediator of hypercalcemia of malignancy, are all osteolytic hormones. Recent studies have demonstrated that endogenous PTH and PTHrP also exert bone anabolic activity and that PTHrP is a crucial modulator of growth plate development. At least part of these PTHrP functions can be mediated by intracrine effects, involving a unique interplay of cell surface membrane and intracellular signaling. 1,25(OH)2D also exerts bone anabolic effects and, as with PTHrP, acts on …

Gut hormones: implications for the treatment of obesity.

Bariatric surgery is the only effective treatment for patients with morbid obesity. This is no solution to the present obesity pandemic however. Currently licensed non-surgical pharmaceuticals are of limited efficacy and alternatives are needed. Harnessing the body's own appetite-regulating signals is a desirable pharmacological strategy. The gastrointestinal tract has a prime role in sensing and signalling food intake to the brain. Gut hormones are key mediators of this information, including: peptide YY (PYY), pancreatic polypeptide (PP), glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), oxyntomodulin (OXM),…

Ovarian hormones modulate social recognition in female rats.

The effects of estradiol and progesterone on social recognition were evaluated in a habituation-dishabituation procedure. Ovariectomized female rats were either given 18 microg/kg of estradiol benzoate followed by progesterone, 1 mg/rat, 48 h later or oil. The test consisted of 4 consecutive exposures to a juvenile rat and a final exposure to a novel juvenile. Although the time spent investigating the juvenile was reduced after repeated exposure in both groups, the reduction was larger in the group treated with ovarian hormones. When exposed to a novel juvenile, both groups displayed enhanced …

Can gut hormones control appetite and prevent obesity?

The current obesity epidemic is fuelled by the availability of highly palatable, calorie-dense food, and the low requirement for physical ac … ed comorbidities. One therapeutic target is the development of agents based on the gastrointestinal hormones that control appetite. This review discusses the hormones oxyntomodulin, peptide YY, glucagon-like peptide 1, pancreatic polypeptide, and ghrelin and their emerging potential as anti-obesity treatments.

Hypoxia, hormones, and endothelial progenitor cells in hemangioma.

Hemangiomas are the most common tumor of infancy, and although the natural history of these lesions is well described, their etiology remains unknown. One current theory attributes the development of hemangiomas to placentally-derived cells; however, conclusive evidence to support a placental origin is lacking. While placental tissue and hemangiomas do share molecular similarities, it is possible that these parallels are the result of analogous responses of endothelial cells and vascular progenitors to similar environmental cues. Specifically, both tissue types consist of actively proliferatin

[Pancreatic hormones and hormonal regulation of insulin secretion].

Endocrine pancreas producing insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide is under the influence of different types of regulation; among them the regulatory role of enteropancreatic axis plays an important role. Incretin effect of glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is significantly involved in the insulin secretion which is modulated by many other hormones. Diabetes mellitus, similarly to disturbances of other hormones, can cause impaired regulation of insulin and other pancreatic hormones.

Pituitary-gonadal hormones and interleukin patterns in leprosy.

The functional status of pituitary-gonadal hormones and their relationship to the pattern of inflammatory cytokines in the lepromatous (LL/BL) and tuberculoid (TT/BT) poles of leprosy were investigated. Gonadotropins [luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)], interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were significantly higher in LL/BL leprosy patients than in controls and were not different from controls in TT/BT patients. LH and FSH were positively correlated wit…

Nocturnal hormones and clinical rhythms in rheumatoid arthritis.

It is well known that some clinical signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) vary within a day and between days; the morning stiffness that is observed in patients who have RA has become one of the diagnostic criteria of the disease. The circadian changes in the metabolism or nocturnal secretion of endogenous corticosteroids is certainly responsible, in part, for the time-dependent changes that are observed in the inflammatory response and related clinical symptoms. More recently, melatonin (mLT), another circadian nocturnal hormone that is the secretory product of the pineal gland, has

Stress hormones in Ménière's disease and acoustic neuroma.

Stress has been postulated to trigger or contribute to inner ear pathologies but there is little objective evidence. We investigated stress hormones in Ménière's patients and patients with acoustic neuroma. Data were compared with those from a control group of patients with facial spasm. We assayed classic stress hormones including adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, growth hormone and prolactin. We found a strong positive correlation between cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone in Ménière patients and patients with acoustic neuroma but no correlation in patients with facial spasm. The …

Smoking and hormones in health and endocrine disorders.

Smoking has multiple effects on hormone secretion, some of which are associated with important clinical implications. These effects are mainly mediated by the pharmacological action of nicotine and also by toxins such as thiocyanate. Smoking affects pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, testicular and ovarian function, calcium metabolism and the action of insulin. The major salient clinical effects are the increased risk and severity of Graves' hyperthyroidism and opthalmopathy, osteoporosis and reduced fertility. Smoking also contributes to the development of insulin resistance and hence type 2 diabet

Disulfide-dependent multimeric assembly of resistin family hormones.

Resistin, founding member of the resistin-like molecule (RELM) hormone family, is secreted selectively from adipocytes and induces liver-specific antagonism of insulin action, thus providing a potential molecular link between obesity and diabetes. Crystal structures of resistin and RELMbeta reveal an unusual multimeric structure. Each protomer comprises a carboxy-terminal disulfide-rich beta-sandwich "head" domain and an amino-terminal alpha-helical "tail" segment. The alpha-helical segments associate to form three-stranded coiled coils, and surface-exposed interchain disulfide linkages mediat

The effect of thyroid hormones in psoriasis vulgaris.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Certain endocrinological disturbances are assumed to exacerbate psoriasis. In this study we compared the serum thyroid … antly higher than in those with normal hormone levels (P< 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The role of thyroid hormones in the etiopathogenesis of psoriasis and the effects of such differences in psoriatic patients must be investigated with wider and comprehensive laboratory and clinical studies.

Regulation of cell signalling cascades by steroid hormones.

Steroid hormones control a wide variety of cellular functions important for cell homeostasis, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Evidence collected in the last few years indicates that this regulation is mediated by a complex interface of direct control of gene expression (so-called "transcriptional" action, driven by receptors that are localized in cell nucleus) and by regulation of cell signaling/phosphorylation cascades ("extranuclear" action, mediated by receptors that are localized in close proximity to cellular membrane). Regulation of gene expression takes place via ligand-d…
