Synchronism between Aspidosperma macrocarpon (Apocynaceae) resources allocation and the establishment of the gall inducer Pseudophacopteron sp. (Hemiptera: Psylloidea).

The joint interpretation of phenology and nutritional metabolism provides important data on plant tissues reactivity and the period of gall induction. A population of Aspidosperma macrocarpon (Apocynaceae) with leaf galls induced by a Pseudophacopteron sp. (Psylloidea) was studied in Goiás state, Brazil. Assuming the morphological similarity between host leaves and intralaminar galls, a gradient from non-galled leaves towards galls should be generated, establishing a morpho-physiological continuum. The phenology, infestation of galls, and the carbohydrate and nitrogen contents were monthly eva

Self-limiting outbreak of crayfish plague in an Austropotamobius pallipes population of a river basin in the Abruzzi region (central Italy).

Crayfish plague, caused by the oomycete Aphanomyces astaci, is a serious disease of European freshwater crayfish and has eliminated entire populations in several European countries. In September 2011, mortality was observed among the Austropotamobius pallipes population of a river basin in the Abruzzi region (central Italy), and A. astaci DNA was detected by PCR in dead crayfish. A systematic survey was carried out to evaluate the spread and the effects of the plague in the river basin. The source of the outbreak remained unknown since North American crayfish species, which frequently act as s

Regular dorsal dimples and damaged mites of Varroa destructor in some Iranian honey bees (Apis mellifera).

The frequency of damaged Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman (Mesostigmata: Varroidae) found on the bottom board of hives of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) has been used as an indicator of the degree of tolerance or resistance of honey bee colonies against mites. However, it is not clear that this measure is adequate. These injuries should be separated from regular dorsal dimples that have a developmental origin. To investigate damage to Varroa mites and regular dorsal dimples, 32 honey bee (A. mellifera) colonies were selected from four Iranian provinces: Isfahan, M

Characterizing herbivore resistance mechanisms: spittlebugs on Brachiaria spp. as an example.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and evolution of community-acquired methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strains in Africa is poorly understood. However, one particular MRSA lineage called ST88, appears to be rapidly establishing itself as an "African" CA-MRSA clone. In this study, we employed whole genome sequencing to provide more information on the genetic background of ST88 CA-MRSA isolates from Ghana and to describe in detail ST88 CA-MRSA isolates in comparison with other MRSA lineages worldwide. METHODS: We first established a complete ST88 reference genome (AUS0325) using Pa

Host-specific performance and host use in the kleptoparasitic marine snail Trichotropis cancellata.

Generalist parasites may disproportionately use certain hosts because of different benefits associated with each host species. I measured the growth rate of the marine snail Trichotropis cancellata, a facultative kleptoparasite that can suspension feed and steal food, on different hosts to determine the relative nutritional benefits of each host. The variation in tentacle (feeding structure) area among the hosts studied had the potential to provide parasitic snails with different amounts of nutrition for growth. In field experiments, suspension-feeding snails isolated from potential hosts grew

Mosquito host influences on development of filariae.

A brief review is presented of the literature relating to factors which limit the capacity of filariae to develop in mosquitoes, with particular emphasis on immune mechanisms. Most insects respond to bacterial infection by the production of potent antibacterial proteins, but little is known of this aspect of the immune response in mosquitoes or of the possible influence of immune proteins on the fate of filarial infections in mosquitoes. A summary account is given of recent experiments with the mosquito Aedes aegypti which involve passive transfer of immune haemolymph together with its in vitr

[Histopathology of bilharziasis].

Our conception of Bilharziosis, one of the oldest known illness, has been considerably modified during the last twenty years with the development of Immunology. In fact, it is now established that the severity of the illness depends upon the importance of granuloma which arises round the emprisoned egg in the tissues and the sclerosis mutilation which follows. It is possible to describe, successively around the egg, exsudative granuloma, productive granuloma, and sclerocicatricial nodule whose size will depend upon the tissular immunity. In particular this granuloma will be practically non-exi

The development of Onchocerca volvulus in two temperate blackfly species, Simulium ornatum Meigen and Simulium lineatum Meigen.

In view of the promise shown by temperate simuliids for laboratory colonization, the ability of Simulium ornatum and S. lineatum to support the development of Onchocerca volvulus was investigated. An injection technique is described for the introduction of O. volvulus microfilariae from a chimpanzee into female simuliids in the absence of a bloodmeal. RPMI 1640 medium, with penicillin, streptomycin and foetal calf serum, proved satisfactory as an inoculation medium. Third stage larvae were obtained in both S. ornatum and S. lineatum after seven days at 27 degrees C. The rate of development of

Mutual interactions of the apicomplexan parasites Toxoplasma gondii and Eimeria tenella with cultured poultry macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii and Eimeria tenella are two common parasites in poultry. Mixed infections are likely to occur frequently in chickens due to the high prevalence of both pathogens. In this study, we investigate the co-occurrence of the two pathogens in the same immunocompetent host cell population towards potential parasite-parasite as well as altered patterns of parasite-host interactions. METHODS: Primary macrophages from chicken blood were co-infected in vitro with T. gondii tachyzoites (RH strain) and E. tenella sporozoites (Houghton strain) for 72 h. Morphological observation

Characterization of the dual functions of Leishmania CK1.2 in both the parasite and the macrophage.

Leishmania CK1.2 (L-CK1.2) is a serine/threonine protein kinase essential for the survival of the protozoan parasite Leishmania, the causative agent of leishmaniasis. This study investigates the dynamic localization pattern of L-CK1.2 and the broad spectrum of its interacting partners within the parasite. Using proteomic analysis and confocal microscopy, we identified 230 L-CK1.2-associated proteins across the major parasite life stages. This analysis revealed the ubiquitous presence of L-CK1.2 in various cellular structures, including the cytoskeleton, basal body, and flagellum. Using an in v

Sex-Specific Immune Responses Mediate Host Specificity in Hookworm Infections.

Hookworm infections affect 500-700 million people worldwide and can lead to chronic conditions, such as malnutrition and anemia. The challen … is species are independent of the host immune landscape. These results underscore the complexity of host-parasite interactions and point to new directions for therapeutic strategies, which may differ between sex.

T. Muris Infection Dynamics of a Fresh, Wild Isolate: Is the Established E Isolate Still Relevant?

For decades, parasitic worms such as Trichuris muris have been maintained in laboratory animals, providing insights into host-parasite interactions and host immune responses. The most used T. muris isolate is the E isolate, established in the laboratory in 1954. However, one concern with these model systems is the potential for laboratory-induced selection and therefore changes in host-parasite interactions. To address these concerns, we compare the E isolate with a recently isolated T. muris isolate (M isolate), established from wild house mice (Mus musculus domesticus, Isle of May, UK), in t…

Study of the migration of Fasciola hepatica juveniles across the intestinal barrier of the host by quantitative proteomics in an ex vivo model.

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite that infects animals and humans causing fasciolosis, a worldwide-distributed disease responsible f … hock proteins HSP90 and alpha crystallin, amongst others. This study brings new insights into early host-parasite interactions in fasciolosis and sheds light on the proteomic changes in FhNEJ triggered upon excystment and intestinal wall crossing, which could serve to define new targets for the prevention and treatment of this widespread parasitic disease.

Legionella-protozoa-nematode interactions in aquatic biofilms and influence of Mip on Caenorhabditis elegans colonization.

Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaireś disease, is naturally found in aquatic habitats. The intracellular life cycle within protozoa pre-adapted the "accidental" human pathogen to also infect human professional phagocytes like alveolar macrophages. Previous studies employing the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans suggest that also nematodes might serve as a natural host for L. pneumophila. Here, we report for the first time from a natural co-habitation of L. pneumophila and environmental nematode species within biofilms of a warm water spring. In addition, we identified

The relation between the number of parasites/host and host age: population dynamic causes and maximum likelihood estimation.

We examined dynamical factors that shape the distribution of the number of parasites/host in constant or temporally varying environments, and with or without host-age dependent variation in host susceptibility and parasite mortality. We predict properties of the parasite distribution in the absence of density-dependent factors such as density-dependent mortality of recruitment and parasite-induced host mortality. These properties provide a criterion for the detection of density dependence in temporally variable systems with host-age dependent interactions. We have then introduced methods to es

Time-of-day of infection: impact on liver stage malaria parasites in untreated and drug-treated hosts.

BACKGROUND: Circadian clocks are thought to have evolved owing to the benefits of anticipating daily environmental rhythms. Daily environmental rhythms that impact on fitness include interactions between organisms, such as host-pathogen interactions. For example, host susceptibility to infection for taxonomically diverse hosts and pathogens varies across the circadian cycle. We previously revealed that mosquito vectors are less susceptible to malaria (Plasmodium) infection during their active phase (night time), and here we test whether a similar pattern occurs for infection of the mammalian h
