Study and ranking of determinants of Taenia solium infections by classification tree models.

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is an important public health problem occurring mainly in developing countries. This work aimed to study the determinants of human T. solium infections in the Eastern province of Zambia and rank them in order of importance. A household (HH)-level questionnaire was administered to 680 HHs from 53 villages in two rural districts and the taeniasis and cysticercosis status determined. A classification tree model (CART) was used to define the relative importance and interactions between different predictor variables in their effect on taeniasis and cysticercosi

Active and passive smoking and risk of narcolepsy in people with HLA DQB1*0602: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: We examined the risk of narcolepsy associated with active and passive smoking among genetically susceptible individuals. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study in King County, Wash., USA. Between 2001 and 2005, we enrolled 67 cases through physicians and public outreach, and 95 controls through random-digit dialing. Subjects were aged between 18 and 50 years and positive for HLA DQB1*0602. All subjects were administered in-person interviews about their history of active and passive smoking. RESULTS: We observed an increased risk of narcolepsy associated with

Medical comorbidity in bipolar disorder: implications for functional outcomes and health service utilization.

OBJECTIVE: This is the first cross-national population-based investigation exploring the prevalence and functional implications of comorbid general medical disorders in bipolar disorder. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Canadian Community Health Survey (N = 36,984). Analyses were conducted to ascertain the prevalence and prognostic implications of predetermined comorbid general medical disorders among persons who screened positive for a lifetime manic episode (indicative of a diagnosis of bipolar disorder). Within the subpopulation of people who screened positive for a manic episode, the

Anxiety and depression symptoms, and lack of emotional support among the general population before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A prospective national study on prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and emotional support among the general population are unclear. We therefore assessed if the prevalence of high Anxiety and Depression Symptoms (ADS) levels and lack of Emotional Support (ES) increased, and if risk factors of ADS and ES changed. METHODS: Data was extracted from surveys conducted with the Dutch longitudinal population-based LISS panel (N = 3,983). ADS and ES were assessed in March 2019 and 2020. Risk factors for ADS and ES were extracted from surveys in November 2018 and 2019. These were: ADS, gender, educat

Associations between adverse childhood experiences and physical activity domains among middle-aged and older adults: a national analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are widely recognized as risk factors for various negative health outcomes. However, the impact of ACEs on different domains of physical activity in adulthood remains underexplored. Understanding these associations is crucial for designing effective interventions to promote physical activity and reduce health disparities in vulnerable populations. This study aimed to investigate the cumulative effects of ACEs on occupational, leisure-time, and transport-related physical activity among middle-aged and elderly adults. METHODS: Using the life hist

Relationships among production systems, preschool nutritional status, and pesticide-related toxicity in seven ecuadorian communities: a multi-case study approach.

BACKGROUND: Among small Andean potato farmers, greater pesticide use and better linkage to markets are promoted as ways to improve farm outputs and incomes. The health of household members is assumed to improve with higher incomes, although evidence to support such an assumption remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: Using a multidisciplinary approach, we sought to characterize agricultural systems producing potatoes and to assess relationships between these characteristics and farm household health indicators. METHODS: We included seven communities linked to a regional agricultural potato production pl

Job-related risk of latent tuberculosis infection in a homogeneous population of hospital workers in a low incidence area.

BACKGROUND: Few comprehensive tuberculin surveys were carried out in a homogeneous population of health care workers (HCWs) in a low incidence area to assess the risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection by different occupational groups and units. METHODS: Community and occupational factors and tuberculin skin test (TST) reactivity were determined in 1,755 HCWs. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of tuberculin reactivity was 6%. Predicting factors for TST reactivity were age >47 years (OR = 2.88), history of household TB contact (OR = 2.41), years of work as HCW (OR = 2.57), physician (OR = 1.88), an

Occupational health risks and provision gaps among live-in caregivers: findings from a qualitative interview study of Polish live-ins in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Migrant live-in caregivers play an important role in home-based long-term care, yet their working and living conditions remain largely underregulated. Despite increasing evidence of precarious employment and health risks among live-in caregivers internationally, little is known about their occupational health risks and access to occupational health care. METHODS: This qualitative interview study is part of the project Live-In Health and reports findings from 16 semi-structured interviews with Polish live-in caregivers (15 females and one male) working in German private households.

Temporal Connectivity of Social Contact Networks in Urban and Rural India.

BACKGROUND: The epidemic potential of infectious diseases depends on how contacts connect individuals over time-a form of temporal connectivity that has rarely been quantified in resource-poor settings. We used the forward-reachable path (FRP)-the proportion of population reachable from an index person via direct or indirect connections-to quantify temporal connectivity in contact networks relevant for acute respiratory transmission. METHODS: From empirical social-contact data collected in rural and urban Tamil Nadu, India, we derived contact-location-specific network statistics. These statis

The impact of providing intensive care and practical help in mid-life on employment transitions in Europe.

This paper examines how caregiving influences employment transitions among employed mid-life adults (50-69 years) who began providing non-professional care on a daily basis to someone inside or outside their household. Using data from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) from 2004 to 2017, we apply a difference-in-difference model with propensity score weighting to estimate probabilities of various employment change outcomes for each care status. These outcomes include reducing working hours, exiting the labour market, and retiring. Results are compared to those who con

Prevalence and social-ecological correlates of parents' adherence to the 24 h movement guidelines for adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: a national cross-sectional survey in Canada.

Canadian adults are at high risk of chronic diseases from physical inactivity, excessive sedentary behaviour, and poor sleep. Understanding the social-ecological correlates of these behaviours is essential for informing public health interventions. This study examined social-ecological correlates of adherence to the Canadian 24 h Movement Guidelines among parents during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (December 2020). We used baseline data from an online longitudinal survey investigating Canadian parents' adherence to 24 h movement behaviours guidelines. Each guideline was dichotomize

Embodied harm, normalised suffering: experiences of unpaid care and domestic work among women across the life course in sub-Saharan Africa.

Unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW) is an important determinant of women's health and wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While its gendered burden and health consequences are increasingly documented, less is understood about how women interpret these consequences and how the unequal responsibility for UCDW becomes normalised as ordinary, unavoidable, or morally valued. Guided by necrosocial incorporation, a framework we develop by bringing ecosocial theory into conversation with necropolitics, we examine these processes across the life course in Kenya and Uganda. We conducted a reflexive

Patient Perception of University Hospitals' PCs for People Initiative.

The COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic world have highlighted the integral part that social connections play in one's mental and emotional well-being. The modern world had to suddenly adapt and accommodate an abundantly virtual one. Those who were unable to make these technological adaptations, many being low socioeconomic households, were facing many new obstacles, such as losing in-person jobs and being disconnected from their community and services by not having the technology to stay in contact, all while living through a global pandemic. University Hospitals understands and recognizes th
