Meeting patients where they are: The Tacoma MAX clinic's collaborative low-barrier approach to HIV care.

In Tacoma, Washington, people with HIV (PWH) face significant barriers to care. This study compares viral suppression and patient-centered o … , 78.4% RW; p = 0.4). -2.5 years (60.0% MAX, 92.1% RW; p = 0.003). MAX had higher baseline rates of housing instability (p = 0.11) and mental illness (p = 0.02) but cited immediate access, non-judgmental care, and wraparound services as being "lifesaving", with fewer unmet mental health needs and greater care access and education.Low-barrier models play a vital role …

Changes in health-related social needs and in depression and anxiety symptoms in Massachusetts low-income, community health center patients: an observational cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This observational cohort study examined relationships between changes in health-related social needs (HRSN) and mental health symptoms. METHODS: A prospective cohort of adult community health center patients in Boston, Massachusetts completed surveys at baseline and 3-year follow up (LiveWell study, 2020-2024). Changes in HRSNs were categorized as decreased, unchanged, or increased based on the cumulative change in three domains: food insecurity, housing instability, and financial stress. Primary outcomes were changes in depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-8) and anxiety (Gen…

Individual Contributions of Adverse Childhood Experiences to Adolescent Substance Use.

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with adolescent substance use. However, the influence of individual ACEs after controlling for concurrent ACEs is understudied. Methods: Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 3200), we evaluated binary logistic models to test associations from 11 individual ACEs at ages 3-9 (physical abuse; emotional abuse; neglect; housing instability; food insecurity; community violence; parental depression, problematic substance use, intimate partner violence [IPV], incarceration, and death) to adole…

Centering Multilingual Patient Voices in the Co-Design of a Health-Related Social Needs Screening Tool in an Urban Safety-Net Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Health-related social needs (HRSNs) such as housing instability, food insecurity, and transportation barriers are associated with adverse health outcomes and disproportionately affect racially and ethnically marginalized populations. Despite federal mandates and increased investments in screening infrastructure, HRSN screening tools are often implemented without sufficient patient input, potentially reducing engagement and reinforcing stigma. OBJECTIVE: To describe a community-participatory process evaluation to co-design a HRSN screening tool with patients in a linguistically div…

COVID-19 vaccine deliberation among people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at greater risk for severe morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19 due to comorbid, chronic, medical conditions and structural inequities associated with housing instability and incarceration. As such, they are a population that would greatly benefit from COVID-19 vaccination. METHODS: We surveyed 350 syringe exchange clients between March 2021 and June 2021 to collect information on vaccine uptake among PWID, facilitators and barriers to vaccination, and demographic correlates of vaccine hesitancy. RESULTS: Findings highlight that amon…

Respondent-driven sampling to recruit adolescents in Kenya.

PURPOSE: Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) uses long-chain referral whereby members of the target population recruit other members. We descri … he impoverished urban environments where our study was implemented also experience food insecurity, housing instability and violence. RDS can therefore be a valuable recruitment approach for future studies to reach vulnerable adolescents and design interventions that address the variety of health-related challenges that affect this underserved population.

Comparison of counseling methods to promote employment for HIV+ ADULTS.

BACKGROUND: Despite improved health and during a strong job market (pre-COVID-19), a substantial proportion of HIV+ adults remained unemploy … former colleagues, and uncertainty about career direction. Ongoing barriers included substance use, housing instability, ambivalence about forfeiting government benefits, as well as inadequately treated depression. Success in employment for about half of participants is, in this context, a reasonable outcome.

A method for the quantitative and reversible trapping of sulfidic gases from headspaces and its application to the study of wine reductive off-odors.

Some relevant food systems release tiny amounts of sulfidic gases, whose measurement is difficult because of their inherent instability. The present paper demonstrates that Cu(I) solutions trap quantitatively and stabilize sulfidic gases. Once trapped, the gases remain stable for weeks at 4 °C and at least 8 days at 75 °C. Trapped gases can be quantitatively released with tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP) and brine dilution and then determined by GC. Trapping solutions, placed in 20-mL opened vials housed in 100 mL hermetically-sealed flasks containing wine in anoxia, have been used to mon

At the intersection of criminal justice involvement and sexual orientation: Dynamic networks and health among a population-based sample of young Black men who have sex with men.

Mass incarceration of young Black men has a significant impact on their network composition and stability that, in turn, may have major impl … xual networks. Multivariate analyses demonstrate that the association between one's history of CJI, housing instability and drug use is partially explained by one's network CJI. In addition, a higher prevalence of network CJI is associated with increased turnover in the confidant network, and this network instability is also related to important health and social out …
