BACKGROUND: The incidence of secondary displacement in fractures of the greater tuberosity of the humerus remains high, irrespective of whether conservative or surgical treatment is administered. However, the specific risk factors contributing to secondary displacement of the greater tuberosity of the humerus have not been previously reported. The primary objective of this study was to analyze the risk factors associated with secondary displacement of the greater tuberosity of the humerus and to summarize corresponding guidelines for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective

Background Humeral shaft fractures were frequent orthopedic injuries, typically caused by trauma, and the optimal treatment approach remained a subject of discussion. Intramedullary interlocking (IMIL) nailing was a minimally invasive surgical method that offered superior biomechanical stability, especially for diaphyseal fractures, while promoting early mobilization. This prospective study assessed the functional outcomes of IMIL nailing in managing humeral shaft fractures. Objectives This study aims to evaluate the functional outcomes of IMIL nails in treating closed humeral shaft fractures

Proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) are a common type of fracture, particularly in older adults, accounting for approximately 5-6% of all fractures. This article provides a comprehensive review of PHFs, focusing on epidemiology, injury mechanism, clinical and radiographic assessment, classification systems, and treatment options. The incidence of PHFs varies across regions, with rates ranging from 45.7 to 60.1 per 100,000 person-years. Females are more susceptible to PHFs than males, and the incidence is highest in women over the age of 85. The injury mechanism of PHFs is typically bimodal, with…

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral shaft fractures are surgically challenging and plate osteosynthesis with a long straight plate is one operative treatment option in these patients although endangering the radial nerve distally. Helical plates potentially avoid the radial nerve by twisting around the humeral shaft. Aim of the study was to investigate in a human cadaveric model the biomechanical competence of helical plates versus straight lateral plates used for fixation of proximal third comminuted humeral shaft fractures.
METHODS: Eight pairs of humeral cadaveric humeri were instrumented using e

BACKGROUND: Elbow arthroplasty (EA) is an established technique for the treatment of select distal humeral fractures, yet little data exists regarding the safety and outcome of EA in the presence of an open distal humeral fracture where the risk of periprosthetic infection is an even greater concern. We hypothesized that EA does not carry an increased risk of infection or other postoperative complications when performed for simple open distal humeral fractures.
METHODS: Seventeen patients underwent total EA (n = 9) or hemiarthroplasty (n = 8) for an open distal humeral fracture. The open frac…

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar fracture usually occurs as a result of fall on an outstretched hand. Prompt management is essential to prevent complications. Functional outcome after management of this fracture may be predicted by some factors.
AIMS: The study aimed to review the management of supracondylar fractures and determine what factors have an impact on the functional outcome of the elbow using MEPS score in the early post-operative period.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was a retrospective study of all patients with supracondylar fractures that presented at the accident and emergency de

BACKGROUND: Either casting or in situ fixation (to prevent displacement) are recommended for minimally displaced pediatric lateral condyle fractures of indeterminate stability with ≤2 mm lateral displacement and narrowed fracture extension to the epiphyseal articular cartilage. This study compares casting only, acute prophylactic in situ pinning, and surgery if casting fails due to displacement.
METHODS: In total, 738 fractures at a level 1 trauma center between 2008 and 2014 were reviewed. All fractures were assigned a Song classification and Song 2 fractures followed to union were analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the lateral humeral condyle with displacement (>2 mm; <2 mm articular gap) require open reduction and stabilization. Non-displaced fractures should be treated conservatively; however, there are difficulties in the differentiation of complete (potentially unstable) an incomplete (stable) articular fractures. The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of conservative and operative treatment approaches as well as the accuracy of treatment decisions based on fracture stability displayed on repetitive X‑rays.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective data analysis of a

Most closed humeral shaft fractures can be successfully managed nonsurgically. However, fractures for which closed treatment is unsuccessful are stabilized using either plates or intramedullary nails. There are shortcomings associated with each technique, including the potential complications of nonunion, infection, shoulder pain, and radial nerve injury. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), an innovative alternative treatment, is gaining in popularity. This technique is based on the anterior humeral shaft providing a relatively safe surface for plate application, and limited open e
