We have studied under optic and electronmicroscopes the alterations of glomeruli in contralateral kidneys of rats with experimental hydronephrosis. Forty-eight Wistar rats, divided into two groups (control and experimental) were used. They were sacrificed 3, 6, 9 and 12 days after ureteral obstruction. There was a slight hypertrophy of glomeruli and hiperplasia of other components accompanied by a increased development of podocytes.

An experimental model for investigating the effects of localized X-irradiation of a single ureter or the bladder trigone in rats is described. Obstruction of the urinary tract in the irradiated region gives rise to hydroureter and hydronephrosis and the development of these, as detected urographically, gives a clear-cut end point. Unilateral hydronephrosis was induced by temporary ligature of the left ureter in 29 rabbits. In 21 animals so treated, chronic pyelonephritis was simultaneously induced by intravenous application of a suspension of E. coli. Ultrasonographic examination of the upper urinary tract in 109 asymptomatic pregnant women was performed to determine the degree of dilatation, the time of onset, and the range of "physiologic" changes detectable by this method. Classification is established and prevalence and degree of dilatation are categorized by trimesters. Six infants with hydronephrosis developed hypertension during the first year of life. Five of them, all with proved or suspected acute urinary tract infection, had transient hypertensive episodes lasting for 7 to 17 days. One of the five infants, who had ureteropelvic junction obstruction and unilateral hydronephrosis, remained normotensive after nephrectomy. Ultrasonography and CT scanning identified moderate right-side hydronephrosis associated with right proximal and distal ureteral strictures, as well as partial stenosis of the left distal ureter. This research investigated the unstudied impact, in 416 cases of stone-induced hydronephrosis detected radiographically in 369 patients, of stone size on the stone's location in the urinary tract and on the hydronephrosis grade.
