Significance of siderophore-producing cyanobacteria on enhancing iron uptake potentiality of maize plants grown under iron-deficiency.

BACKGROUND: In response to iron deficiency and other environmental stressors, cyanobacteria producing siderophores can help in ameliorating plant stress and enhancing growth physiological and biochemical processes. The objective of this work was to screen the potential of Arthrospira platensis, Pseudanabaena limnetica, Nostoc carneum, and Synechococcus mundulus for siderophore production to select the most promising isolate, then to examine the potentiality of the isolated siderophore in promoting Zea mays seedling growth in an iron-limited environment. RESULTS: Data of the screening experime

Genotype-dependent resilience mediated by melatonin in sweet corn.

BACKGROUND: Water deficits, exacerbated by climate change and unpredictable weather, have become a significant global challenge to agricultural productivity. In this context, exogenous melatonin treatment is well documented as a stress alleviator; however, its effects on various biological processes, particularly in less-explored genotypes, remain understudied. This study aimed to enhance water deficit resilience in sweet corn by applying foliar melatonin to four genotypes-Messenger, Dessert, Royalty, and Tyson under two levels of water deprivation induced by polyethylene glycol at 8% and 12%

Deciphering the role of nitric oxide in mitigation of systemic fungicide induced growth inhibition and oxidative damage in wheat.

Consento (CON) poses a significant environmental hazard as a systemic fungicide, adversely affecting the health of non-target organisms. Nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule, is known to play a crucial role in plant physiology and abiotic stress tolerance. However, whether NO plays any role to enhance fungicide CON tolerance in wheat seedlings is yet unclear. Therefore, we conducted a hydroponic experiment i) to investigate the morpho-physio-biochemical changes of wheat seedlings to fungicide CON stress, and ii) to examine the effects of NO and fungicide CON treatments on oxidative damage,

Effective bioremediation of clarithromycin and diclofenac in wastewater by microbes and Arundo donax L.

Bioremediation of pharmaceuticals has gained large research efforts, but there is still a need to improve the performance of bioremediation systems by selecting effective organisms. In this study, we characterized the capability to remove clarithromycin (CLA) and diclofenac (DCF) by the bacterium Streptomyces rochei, and the fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes versicolor. The macrolide antibiotic CLA and the non-steroid anti-inflammatory DCF were selected because these are two of the most frequently detected drugs in water bodies. Growth and content of the PhCs and a DCF metabolite

Effect of jasmonic acid on the phytoremediation of dinitrophenol from wastewater by Solanum nigrum L. and Atriplex lentiformis (Torr.) S. Watson.

Phytoremediation is one of the best methods for cleaning up natural resources like water because plants are eco-friendly and safe for the ecosystem. Hyperaccumulators, e.g., Solanum nigrum L. and Atriplex lentiformis (Torr.) S. Watson, have been used to remove toxic metals from soil and water through phytoremediation techniques, but it is unknown if they can remove hazardous chemicals such as dinitrophenol (DNP), from wastewater. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to study the efficiency of S. nigrum and A. lentiformis in removing DNP from wastewater. Jasmonic acid (JAC) was applied to the

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals key genes and coordinated mechanisms in two rice cultivars differing in cadmium accumulation.

Although Cd accumulation varies among rice varieties is recognized, the underlying mechanisms are not well clarified. In this study, comparative transcriptome analysis were performed by hydroponic culture system with two rice varieties, Y1540 (high Cd accumulator) and Y15 (low Cd accumulator) under 20 μM Cd stress. Results revealed 17,320 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in roots of Y15 (7,655 upregulated and 9,665 downregulated) and 17,386 DEGs in roots of Y1540 (8,823 upregulated and 8,563 downregulated) expose to 20 μM Cd stress. Gene ontology (GO) analysis enriched 24 and 26 terms in

Analysis of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) transcriptome regarding efficiency of phosphorus use.

Common bean is a highly important food in tropical regions, where most production occurs on small farms with limited use of technology and, consequently, greater vulnerability to abiotic stresses such as nutritional stress. Usually phosphorus (P) is the most limiting nutrient for crop growth in these regions. The aim of this study was to characterize the gene expression profiles of the genotypes of common bean IAC Imperador (P-responsive) and DOR 364 (P-unresponsive) under different P concentrations using RNA-seq transcriptome sequencing technology. Plants were grown hydroponically, with appli

Mercury mobility and effects in the salt-marsh plant Halimione portulacoides: Uptake, transport, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms.

The plant Halimione portulacoides, an abundant species widely distributed in temperate salt-marshes, has been previously assessed as bioindicator and biomonitor of mercury contamination in these ecosystems. The present study aims to assess uptake and distribution of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) within H. portulacoides, potential mercury release by volatilization through leaves, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms by investigating plant photochemical responses. Stem cuttings of H. portulacoides were collected from a salt-marsh within the Tagus estuary natural protected area, a

Cellular damage induced by cadmium and mercury in Medicago sativa.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) plantlets were exposed to Cd or Hg to study the kinetics of diverse stress indexes. In the so-called beaker-size hydroponic system, plantlets were grown in 30 microM of Cd or Hg for 7 d. Oxidative stress took place and increased over time, a linear response being observed with Cd but not with Hg. To improve the sensitivity of the stress assays used, a micro-assay system, in which seedlings were exposed for 24 h, was developed. Phytotoxicity of metals, quantified as growth inhibition, was observed well before there was any change in the non-protein thiol tissue concent

The Micro-battlefield under climate change: the domino effect of freeze-thaw cycles on Tributyl phosphate accumulation in grains via nutritional, metabolomic, and microbial profiling.

Under the context of climate change, the risks posed by emerging combined pollution to food security, particularly the accumulation and toxicity of contaminants in the edible parts of crops, remain poorly understood. This study investigated the individual and combined effects of freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) and the flame retardant tributyl phosphate (TBP) on rye growth, physiology, rhizosphere microbiome, quality, and grain accumulation through short-term hydroponic and long-term soil cultivation experiments. The results showed that combined FTC and TBP stress exerted a significant synergistic tox

More is not always better: phosphorus context shapes the effectiveness of single-strain and consortium plant growth-promoting bacteria in tomato.

Phosphorus availability determines whether single or consortium PGPB maximize tomato performance, demonstrating that rational inoculant design should prioritize functional complementarity over increasing microbial complexity. Phosphorus (P) availability is a major constraint for crop development and productivity, and beneficial bacteria are increasingly proposed to enhance plant P-acquisition efficiency. However, their comparative performance remains variable across studies and experimental contexts. This study investigated whether single plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) strains and a de

Phenotypic and Physiological Responses of Rice Seedlings to Co-Exposure of Polystyrene Microplastics and Heavy Metals.

The co-occurrence of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals in agricultural ecosystems poses emerging threats, yet their combined ecotoxicological effects on crop plants remain poorly understood. To address this gap, a hydroponic exposure experiment was conducted to evaluate the individual and combined effects of 50 mg·L-1 polystyrene (PS) microplastics, lead (Pb, 35 mg·L-1), and cadmium (Cd, 20 mg·L-1) on the phenotypic growth, biomass accumulation, and peroxidase (POD) activity of rice seedlings. The results indicated that: (1) Individual polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) treatment did not in

Ecotypic variation and inducible accumulation responses of Leersia hexandra Swartz under Cu(II) and Ni(II) co-contamination.

Heavy metal co-contamination is a global challenge for phytoremediation, particularly in regions impacted by mining and electroplating industries, where the selection of plant materials with stable and resilient accumulation traits remains a key bottleneck. This study investigated the differential responses of two ecotypes of L. hexandra, a historically contaminated-site ecotype and an uncontaminated cropland-site ecotype, to combined Cu(II) and Ni(II) stress in a hydroponic system. The contaminated-site ecotype exhibited significantly higher metal accumulation capacity than the cropland-site

[Exogenous Spermidine Regulates Ryegrass Root System Response to Cd Stress and Its Transcriptome Analysis].

The application of exogenous growth-regulating substances is an effective technique to enhance plant stress tolerance. Here, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous basal application of 0.1 mmol·L-1 spermidine (Spd) on both the physiology and molecular biology of ryegrass root systems under varying degrees (0, 5, and 10 mg·L-1) of cadmium (Cd) stress using ryegrass as the test plants. The results of physiological studies revealed that Cd stress significantly reduced the physiological functions of the ryegrass root system, whereas the addition of Spd effect

Nano mercury selenide as a source of mercury for rice.

Mercury (Hg) is a persistent and toxic metal while mercury selenide (HgSe) is generally considered as the environmental sink of Hg in its biogeochemical cycle. Recent studies found nano-sized HgSe (nano-HgSe) could be transformed by certain bacteria. This raises safety concerns about the application of selenium (Se) to curb Hg contamination in farmlands. Therefore, hydroponic experiments were performed in which rice plants were cultured with different concentrations of nano-HgSe and micro-sized HgSe (micro-HgSe) to explore their bioavailability and toxicity. It was found that both nano-HgSe an

Influence of nitrogen forms and application rates on the phytoextraction of copper by castor bean (Ricinus communis L.).

Fertilization is an important agricultural strategy for enhancing the efficiency of phytoremediation in copper (Cu)-contaminated soils. In this study, the effects of nitrogen (N) forms, including ammonium (NH4+-N) and nitrate (NO3--N), on the growth, translocation, and accumulation of Cu in the tissues of Ricinus communis L. were investigated in pot and hydroponic experiments. The results demonstrated that higher biomass and N contents in plants were obtained when N was supplied as NO3--N rather than NH4+-N. Application of N increased the Cu content in the roots of R. communis, with a higher c

Effects of free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) on nitrogen assimilation and growth of winter wheat under nitrate and ammonium fertilization.

A 2-year Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment was conducted with winter wheat. It was investigated whether elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (e[CO2 ]) inhibit nitrate assimilation and whether better growth and nitrogen acquisition under e[CO2 ] can be achieved with an ammonium-based fertilization as it was observed in hydroponic culture with wheat. Under e[CO2 ] a decrease in nitrate assimilation has been discussed as the cause for observed declines in protein concentration in C3 cereals. Wheat was grown under ambient [CO2 ] and e[CO2 ] (600 ppm) with three levels (deficiency, optima
