PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Wine contains chemical and biological contaminants. Symptoms such as facial flushing, asthma and oral allergic swelling and burning (oral syndrome) have been attributed to these contaminants and food additives. Their clinical implications should be known.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have reported a high prevalence of hypersensitivity symptoms after intake of alcoholic drinks in the general population. Red wine was the most common beverage implicated. Wine contains many contaminants. Some of them come from Hymenoptera insects that fall into the wine when grapes are colle…

Patients with mastocytosis have an increased risk for mast cell activation events including anaphylaxis when exposed to certain drugs and Hymenoptera venom. Hypotension and cardiovascular collapse without skin or other systemic manifestations can occur after Hymenoptera stings, during the perioperative period, and after exposure to nonsteroidal ntiinflammatory drugs, opioids, and other mast cell activating medications, including vancomycin and quinolones. This chapter reviews the epidemiology, mechanisms, diagnosis, management, and treatment options for Hymenoptera venom and drug-induced react…

BACKGROUND: Bites by poisonous European snakes of the genus Vipera lead to local tissue damage and systemic symptoms such as generalized oedema, hypotension, gastrointestinal symptoms, haemolysis and renal dysfunction. Not rarely anaphylactic symptoms like urticaria, localized angioedema and asthma are observed.
OBJECTIVE: To look for snake venom-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E antibodies in patients with a history of bites by European vipers and for cross-reactions with Hymenoptera venoms, that have a similar composition.
METHOD: Ten patients with a history of bites by Vipera aspis or Vipera…

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate neem oil and neem extract for the management of key honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) pests. Neem pesticides inhibited the growth of Paenibacillus larvae (Ash, Priest & Collins) in vitro but had no effect on the growth of Ascophaera apis (Olive & Spiltoir). Azadirachtin-rich extract (neem-aza) was 10 times more potent than crude neem oil (neem oil) against P. larvae suggesting that azadirachtin is a main antibiotic component in neem. Neem-aza, however, was ineffective at controlling the honey bee mite parasites Varroa jacobsoni (Ouduemans) and Acarap

Here are two cases of two male patients of 57 and 62 years of age, already known as allergic to stinging hymenoptera venom, who after a horsefly bite have presented a serious 3-4 degree-type Mueller classification systemic reaction. The diagnosis has been carried out clinically and after an accurate environmental anamnesis and along with prick tests and RAST, further specific entomological confirm. In literature the so called wasp-mosquito-syndrome has been indicated where hyaluronidase has been referred to as the cross allergen, between the hymenoptera venom and the mosquito saliva, which lik…

Determining the effects of chemicals used in agricultural pest control on non-target organisms such as parasitoids is crucial for biological control programs. The pupal endoparasitoid wasp Pimpla turionellae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is an important biological control agent that relies on natural hosts, such as the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), to complete its development. This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo and in silico impacts of the antifungal agent terbinafine (TRB) on the oxidative stress markers and detoxification enzymes of adult P. turionellae.…

Doryctobracon maculatus Marinho, a new species of Braconidae (Opiinae) collected in the municipalities of Piracicaba and São Roque, state of São Paulo, Brazil, is described and illustrated. This new species is placed in group of species with areolate propodeum, but is easily distinguished from other species of this group, and other members of the genus by the noticeable black to dark-brown spots on the head, mesosoma and metasoma. This new species was reared in larvae of Anastrepha pseudoparallela (Diptera, Tephritidae) in passion fruits, Passiflora alata Curtis (Passifloraceae). An illustrate

BACKGROUND: Severe anaphylaxis to honeybee or vespid stings is associated with a variety of risk factors, which are poorly defined.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the association of baseline serum tryptase concentrations and other variables routinely recorded during patient evaluation with the frequency of past severe anaphylaxis after a field sting.
METHODS: In this observational multicenter study, we enrolled 962 patients with established bee or vespid venom allergy who had a systemic reaction after a field sting. Data were collected on tryptase concentration, age, sex, culprit insect,

INTRODUCTION: From the literature, patients with a history of anaphylaxis to hymenoptera venom and positive specific IgE have shown a correlation between elevated tryptase levels and two clinical situations: systemic mastocytosis and an increased risk of reactions to venom immunotherapy or hymenoptera sting. Other clinical scenarios could explain elevated tryptase levels.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 67 year old male (P1) and a 77 year old male (P2) were evaluated for previous severe anaphylaxis to hymenoptera sting. They underwent standard diagnostic work-up for hymenoptera venom allergy. Having …

Venom immunotherapy (VIT) for Hymenoptera allergy is accepted as safe and effective. However, widely varying success rates and frequencies of side effects are reported. Differences between various Hymenoptera species could account for these diverging results. We therefore analyzed 205 patients with a history of systemic allergic reactions to either honeybee (148 patients) or yellow jacket stings (57 patients) during VIT. All patients had a positive skin test to the respective venom before VIT, were monitored for side effects of VIT, and submitted to a sting challenge while they were receiving …

BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis involves the abnormal proliferation of mast cells and clinical variability. In the case of anaphylaxis, the triggering antigen, often associated with Hymenoptera allergens, must be identified. The common fig (Ficus carica) requires the fig wasp (Blastophaga psenes) for pollination.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the ingestion of B. psenes as a trigger of anaphylaxis in patients with mastocytosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Skin prick tests (SPTs) and specific immunoglobulin E to the possible involved allergens were carried out in the patient and in 4 controls allergic to Hymenop…

A 49-year-old man had mild parkinsonism after being stung by a wasp, a member of the Hymenoptera order. His clinical course was stable for 6 months after which his condition rapidly progressed to a severe akinetic-rigid syndrome with evidence, on a magnetic resonance imaging brain scan, of marked destruction of the basal ganglia. The symptoms did not respond to standard antiparkinsonian medications. Repeated courses of plasmapheresis followed by monthly intravenous infusions of immunoglobulin and long-term administration of azathioprine halted and appeared to partially reverse his deterioratio…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To analyse the association of systemic allergic hymenoptera sting reactions with mastocytosis and elevated baseline serum tryptase and to discuss diagnosis and treatment in patients with both diseases.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent large studies on patients with mastocytosis a much higher incidence of severe anaphylaxis following hymenoptera stings than in the normal population was documented. In patients with hymenoptera venom allergy, elevated baseline tryptase is strongly associated with severe anaphylaxis. Fatal sting reactions were reported in patients with mastocytosis, …

Although many antimicrobial components (i.e. antimicrobial peptides) have been found in many social Hymenoptera venoms, no antimicrobial compound is purified and characterized from parasitic Hymenoptera. From the venoms of the ectoparasitic wasp, Nasonia vitripennis, a defensin-like antimicrobial peptide named defensin-NV was purified and characterized. Defensin-NV is composed of 52 amino acid residues including 6 cysteines forming 3 disulfide bridges. Its amino acid sequence is VTCELLMFGGVVGDSACAANCLSMGKAGGSCNGGLCDCRKTTFKELWDKRFG. By BLAST search, defensin-NV showed significant sequence simil…

The brinjal fruit and shoot borer (BFSB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a very detrimental pest that causes significant economic losses to brinjal crop worldwide. Infested brinjal fruits were collected from vegetable fields located at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi, India, during two consecutive seasons (2021-2022). The larvae of the pest were brought to the laboratory and reared under controlled conditions of 25 ± 0.5 °C and 70 ± 5% relative humidity, for the emergence of parasitoids. In addition, the survey of Hymenoptera par…

Hymenoptera venom allergy is characterised by systemic anaphylactic reactions that occur in response to stings from members of the Hymenoptera order. Stinging by social Hymenoptera such as ants, honeybees, and vespids is one of the 3 major causes of anaphylaxis; along with food and drug exposure, it accounts for up to 43% of anaphylaxis cases and 20% of anaphylaxis-related fatalities. Despite their recognition as being of considerable public health significance, stinging ant venoms are relatively unexplored in comparison to other animal venoms and may be overlooked as a cause of venom allergy.…

Allergy to Hymenoptera (Apis mellifera, Vespula species, Polistes species, Vespa crabro) venom can be safely and effectively treated by venom immunotherapy (VIT), which in the 40 years since its introduction has been able to prevent reactions to stings, and to treatment as well, though systemic reactions, occasionally severe, are possible. Areas covered: We reviewed the recent literature on VIT by searching in PubMed for the terms 'venom immunotherapy' and 'Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy' to highlight the current status of VIT and the likely development in the coming years. Expert commentary:…

Systemic allergic reactions following insect stings, most often by hymenoptera (honey bee, wasp), are usually of the immediate type and thus mediated by venom specific IgE-antibodies. The most frequent clinical symptoms are urticaria, angioedema, asthma and anaphylactic shock. While in epidemiological surveys up to 4% of individuals report a history of systemic allergic reactions following hymenoptera stings, fatal cases are extremely rare. Diagnosis is based on history, skin tests and estimation of venom specific serum IgE-antibodies (RAST). For treatment of mild systemic reactions antihistam…
