The effect of virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal on pain intensity and body perception disturbance in complex regional pain syndrome.

The present study investigated the effects of virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal on pain intensity and body perception disturbance (BPD) in patients with complex regional pain syndrome. Patients with complex regional pain syndrome were assigned randomly to three experimental groups: the 'virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal' (VBS) group (n=13), the 'watching movement only' group (n=13), and the 'mental rehearsal only' (n=13) group. Then, pretreatment pain intensity and BPD were compared with post-treatment perceptions. The results showed that pain intensity did not decrease sig

Identification Revisited.

The author's aims in this paper are twofold. The first aim is to consider the psychoanalytic concept of identification. What kind of concept or group of concepts is this; in which respects is it radical in reconfiguring psychological theory; and how far might we separate notions of receptive and projective identification? The author's second aim is to pursue the implications for understanding human development and psychopathology. The author illustrates how relatively neglected forms of identification play pivotal roles at different levels of communicative functioning, as well as shape seeming

Identity, Belonging, and Psychological Well-Being Among Indigenous Minorities: The Case of Bedouin Young Adults.

This cross-sectional study examined identity, belonging, perceived discrimination, and psychological well-being among 348 Bedouin young adults in Israel (ages 18-30; M = 20.8, SD = 3.7). The survey assessed identity endorsement and centrality, belonging to the Bedouin community, perceived discrimination, perceived identity threats, and psychological well-being. Latent class analysis identified three descriptive identity profiles: (1) Ambivalent/Moderate Bedouin (mixed identities with moderate endorsement; n = 158), (2) Bedouin-Centered (near-exclusive endorsement of Bedouin identity with limit

Transition shock trajectories and their reciprocal mediation with professional identity on nursing interns' retention: A longitudinal study with educational implications.

BACKGROUND: Transition shock (TS) is a core stressor influencing nursing students' career choices. However, its dynamic trajectories during internship and influence on retention intentions remain underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To identify heterogeneous TS trajectories in nursing interns, examine associations of psychological capital, internship bullying, and organizational support with trajectory categories, and investigate the longitudinal reciprocal effects between TS and professional identity (PI) and their subsequent impact on retention intentions. DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal study wi

From breast cancer patient to teammate: The role of exercise group identity in enhancing well-being.

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have found evidence of the link between physical exercise and improved well-being in breast cancer patients. However, there is little research on physical exercise in a group setting that examines the (re)configuration of social identities and their relationship with well-being among these patients. The study aimed to analyze the configuration of cancer patient identity and the change in its salience when a new social identification as a member of a physical exercise group is incorporated in self-concept, and how this new identity could strengthen the perception of we

The comparability of the visual and verbal versions of the Inclusion of Community in Self scale.

AIMS: Many factors affect the utility and practicality of measures in longitudinal studies characterized by transient participants such as those caught in the cycle of incarceration. The current study evaluated the psychometric equivalency of a visual and a verbal version of a single-item connectedness measure; the aim was to determine whether the different formats can be used interchangeably depending on feasibility. METHODS: Participants were 133 jail inmates (49% male; 43% Black; Mage  = 35 years, SD = 10 years) interviewed just before release from jail. RESULTS: Results provide evidence

Assistive technology and people: a position paper from the first global research, innovation and education on assistive technology (GREAT) summit.

Assistive technology (AT) is a powerful enabler of participation. The World Health Organization's Global Collaboration on Assistive Technology (GATE) programme is actively working towards access to assistive technology for all. Developed through collaborative work as a part of the Global Research, Innovation and Education on Assistive Technology (GREAT) Summit, this position paper provides a "state of the science" view of AT users, conceptualized as "People" within the set of GATE strategic "P"s. People are at the core of policy, products, personnel and provision. AT is an interface between th

The meaningful identity: A longitudinal look at the interplay between identity and meaning in life in adolescence.

Identity formation in adolescence is closely linked to searching for and acquiring meaning in one's life. To date little is known about the manner in which these 2 constructs may be related in this developmental stage. In order to shed more light on their longitudinal links, we conducted a 3-wave longitudinal study, investigating how identity processes and meaning in life dimensions are interconnected across time, testing the moderating effects of gender and age. Participants were 1,062 adolescents (59.4% female), who filled in measures of identity and meaning in life at 3 measurement waves du

Socialization of social anxiety in adolescent crowds.

In this study, we looked at whether social anxiety is socialized, or influenced by peers' social anxiety, more in some peer crowds than others. Adolescents in crowds with eye-catching appearances such as Goths and Punks (here termed Radical), were compared with three comparison groups. Using data from 796 adolescents (353 girls and 443 boys; M ( age ) = 13.36) at three timepoints, the results show that adolescents affiliating with the Radical crowd tended to select peers from the same crowd group. Being a member of a crowd in itself did not predict socialization of social anxiety, but adolesce

Autobiographical memory, autonoetic consciousness, and identity in Asperger syndrome.

Previous results from research on individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) suggest a diminished ability for recalling episodic autobiographical memory (AM). The primary aim of this study was to explore autobiographical memory in individuals with Asperger syndrome and specifically to investigate whether memories in those with AS are characterized by fewer episodic 'remembered' events (due to a deficit in autonoetic consciousness). A further aim was to examine whether such changes in AM might also be related to changes in identity, due to the close relationship between memory and the self and to

Meanings and political implications of "psychopathology" in a gender identity clinic: a report of 10 cases.

Beginning in August 2007, we committed ourselves to a clinical review the co-morbid diagnostic patterns of the last 10 patients interviewed by our Gender Identity Clinic. We found 90% of these diverse patients had at least one other significant form of psychopathology. This finding seems to be in marked contrast to the public, forensic, and professional rhetoric of many who care for transgendered adults. Much of this rhetoric sounds remarkably certain about the long-term value of gender transition, hormones, and sex reassignment surgery in improving the lives of those with Gender Identity Diso

Psychiatric diagnosis and the oppression of women.

The system of psychiatric diagnosis which has recently been adopted by most western countries has features, which in various ways, work against the interests of women. This is important as the diagnostic scheme is not a theoretical work which will lay gathering dust on the bookshelves in medical libraries, it is a practical tool which forms the basis for the categorization of 'the insane'. Once the label has been assigned, it is then quite likely that the person labelled will be encouraged or even forced to have certain treatments. This may cause disquiet if the initial labelling is suspect. T

Gender roles, illness orientation and use of medical services.

The study investigates illness orientation as a factor which may account for sex differences in the utilization of medical care. First, sex differences in the way symptoms are perceived, evaluated and acted upon (illness orientation) are analyzed. Then gender role factors which may account for sex differences in illness orientation are examined. Finally, the degree to which gender role factors and illness orientation account for sex differences in medical care utilization are assessed. The study population includes 1648 adults between the ages of 18 and 59. Medical record data covering 7 years
