Exposure to first-person shooter videogames is associated with multisensory temporal precision and migraine incidence.

Adaptive interactions with the environment require optimal integration and segregation of sensory information. Yet, temporal misalignments in the presentation of visual and auditory stimuli may generate illusory phenomena such as the sound-induced flash illusion, in which a single flash paired with multiple auditory stimuli induces the perception of multiple illusory flashes. This phenomenon has been shown to be robust and resistant to feedback training. According to a Bayesian account, this is due to a statistically optimal combination of the signals operated by the nervous system. From this

Subthreshold violations of trajectory predictions are sensitive to TMS of cerebellum Crus I/II.

We recently suggested that when visual objects move towards each other, it may involve a trajectory prediction and sensory checking at the level of milliseconds. We examined this possibility by exploring the consequences of a sub-threshold manipulation of squares trajectories on a newly found illusion, i.e., the perception of a gap at the time of the collision. We first examined the consequences of the manipulation on the conscious illusion. In a more exploratory way, we studied the EEG correlates of the manipulation, as well as the impact of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on the cere

Pupillary adjustments to the illusory depth of rotoreliefs.

Recent studies in the perception of visual illusions as well as mental imagery indicate that adjustments of the eye pupils reflect the perception instead of the light input stimulating the eyes. The present study put to test the expectation that similar adjustments of the eye pupil and, possibly, of other oculomotor responses like vergence, would be triggered by the stereokinetic effect, that is, illusory depth. In an eye-tracking study, both gaze direction and pupillary changes were measured while observers viewed "rotoreliefs,"' that is, rotating two-dimensional patterns, that are known to g…

Grip forces isolated from knowledge about object properties following a left parietal lesion.

When lifting two objects with equal weight but different size, we judge the smaller object to be heavier. This size-weight illusion has been intensively tested by the recruitment of fingertip grip forces during precision lifting. Previous findings have suggested that perceptual (object size) prediction can influence sensorimotor prediction (anticipatory grip force scaling to the object size) but these predictions could be processed independently. This study investigates whether the anticipatory scaling of the grip forces according to object properties critically depends on the integrity of the

Visual symptoms in Parkinson's disease and Parkinson's disease dementia.

Visual symptoms are common in PD and PD dementia and include difficulty reading, double vision, illusions, feelings of presence and passage, and complex visual hallucinations. Despite the established prognostic implications of complex visual hallucinations, the interaction between cognitive decline, visual impairment, and other visual symptoms remains poorly understood. Our aim was to characterize the spectrum of visual symptomatology in PD and examine clinical predictors for their occurrence. Sixty-four subjects with PD, 26 with PD dementia, and 32 age-matched controls were assessed for visua…

The moderating role of early traumatic experiences on the association of schizotypal traits with visual perception.

The findings on the association of schizotypal traits with the perception of visual illusions are scarce and inconsistent and have not taken into consideration potential effects of childhood traumatic experiences, a risk factor for schizophrenia-spectrum conditions. Thus, the present study addressed the question of potential moderating effects of early traumatic experiences on the association between different aspects of schizotypal traits with the perception of the Müller-Lyer and Navon's Hierarchical Letters (NHL) illusions. The study revealed that (a) increased suspiciousness was associated…

Distortions of space and time in and around objects and events.

Our perceptual experience is not a veridical representation of the world around us. We perceive structure in the form of objects and events, and this structure has consequences. Like gravity distorts space and time in the physical world, objects and events distort space and time in our minds, resulting in a plethora of illusions that observers can readily appreciate for themselves. Moreover, many of these distortions of space (caused by objects) and time (caused by events) appear to be perfect analogs of one another-suggesting a deep relationship between the representation of space and time, o…

Induced movement based on subtraction of motion from the inducing object.

Induced movement occurs not only when an object surrounding a stationary one moves below threshold but when it moves above threshold. The above-threshold effect is particularly puzzling and seemingly irrational because the relative displacement should be fully accounted for by perceiving the moving object in motion. The accepted theory has been that such excess motion can be explained in terms of a separation of systems: The enclosed object is governed by the relationship to its immediately surrounding frame of reference, and the latter is governed either by the relationship to its surrounding

Perception of spatial orientation in microgravity.

Experiments during space and parabolic flights have shown that human spatial orientation in microgravity differs to a significant extent from its performance on earth. Due to the missing reference of gravitational force, unusual perceptual phenomena are observed, from inversion illusions to errors of perceived motion and position with respect to the spacecraft. This article gives an overview of results collected from space missions and parabolic flight campaigns, and proposes new lines of research about the perceptual phenomena of spatial orientation in microgravity. It is shown that most of t…

Fooling your feelings: artificially induced referred sensations are linked to a modulation of the primary somatosensory cortex.

Recent studies demonstrated tactile illusions in healthy subjects by manipulating visual and tactile information. For example, a rubber hand, lying on a table in front of the subject and not connected with the body, can be felt by the subject as belonging to his or her own body by a simple visuotactile manipulation. Aim of the present study was to create an illusion in which the subject feels touch on a body site which is different from the actual touch, hence showing a referral of touch similar to those reported in phantom limb patients. Since it is known from animal studies that tactile illu…

Causal Inference of Body Ownership in the Posterior Parietal Cortex.

How do we come to sense that a hand in view belongs to our own body or not? Previous studies have suggested that the integration of vision and somatosensation in the frontoparietal areas plays a critical role in the sense of body ownership (i.e., the multisensory perception of limbs and body parts as our own). However, little is known about how these areas implement the multisensory integration process at the computational level and whether activity predicts illusion elicitation in individual participants on a trial-by-trial basis. To address these questions, we used functional magnetic resona

"Tricking the Brain" Using Immersive Virtual Reality: Modifying the Self-Perception Over Embodied Avatar Influences Motor Cortical Excitability and Action Initiation.

To offer engaging neurorehabilitation training to neurologic patients, motor tasks are often visualized in virtual reality (VR). Recently introduced head-mounted displays (HMDs) allow to realistically mimic the body of the user from a first-person perspective (i.e., avatar) in a highly immersive VR environment. In this immersive environment, users may embody avatars with different body characteristics. Importantly, body characteristics impact how people perform actions. Therefore, alternating body perceptions using immersive VR may be a powerful tool to promote motor activity in neurologic pat

Heading representations in primates are compressed by saccades.

Perceptual illusions help to understand how sensory signals are decoded in the brain. Here we report that the opposite approach is also applicable, i.e., results from decoding neural activity from monkey extrastriate visual cortex correctly predict a hitherto unknown perceptual illusion in humans. We record neural activity from monkey medial superior temporal (MST) and ventral intraparietal (VIP) area during presentation of self-motion stimuli and concurrent reflexive eye movements. A heading-decoder performs veridically during slow eye movements. During fast eye movements (saccades), however,…

The role of the limbic system in experiential phenomena of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Experiential phenomena occurring in spontaneous seizures or evoked by brain stimulation were reported by 18 of 29 patients with medically intractable temporal lobe epilepsy who were investigated with chronic, stereotaxically implanted intracerebral electrodes. The phenomena mainly consisted of perceptual (visual or auditory) hallucinations or illusions, memory flashbacks, illusions of familiarity, forced thinking, or emotions. Experiential phenomena did not occur unless a seizure discharge or electrical stimulation involved limbic structures. For such phenomena to occur, seizure discharge or e…

From avatars to body swapping: The use of virtual reality for assessing and treating body-size distortion in individuals with anorexia.

In the last 30 years, virtual reality (VR) has offered innovative solutions for assessing and treating body representation disturbances in anorexia nervosa (AN). The most recent and innovative trend is the exploitation of the so-called VR-based body swapping illusion. The aim of this case study was to report the use of this VR protocol within a multidisciplinary treatment of AN. A patient with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 diagnosis of AN underwent an intensive multidisciplinary outpatient treatment. Three sessions of a VR-based body swapping illusion (i.e., the experimental induction

How magic changes our expectations about autism.

In the vanishing-ball illusion, the magician's social cues misdirect the audience's expectations and attention so that the audience "sees" a ball vanish in the air. Because individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are less sensitive to social cues and have superior perception for nonsocial details compared with typically developing individuals, we predicted that they would be less susceptible to the illusion. Surprisingly, the opposite result was found, as individuals with ASD were more susceptible to the illusion than a comparison group. Eye-tracking data indicated that subtle temporal

Neural Representations in Visual and Parietal Cortex Differentiate between Imagined, Perceived, and Illusory Experiences.

Humans constantly receive massive amounts of information, both perceived from the external environment and imagined from the internal world. To function properly, the brain needs to correctly identify the origin of information being processed. Recent work has suggested common neural substrates for perception and imagery. However, it has remained unclear how the brain differentiates between external and internal experiences with shared neural codes. Here we tested this question in human participants (male and female) by systematically investigating the neural processes underlying the generation
