APASA: adaptive selection of informative peritumoral regions for improved automated cancer lesion analysis.

Precise cancer lesion analysis in medical imaging critically depends on the accurate definition of regions of interest (ROIs), which directly influence diagnostic and clinical outcomes. While peritumoral features are known to enhance lesion characterization, efficiently defining meaningful peritumoral ROIs remains a challenge. We propose an adaptive peritumoral area selection approach (APASA) that systematically identifies the most informative ROI surrounding a lesion, enabling the extraction of meaningful radiomic features for improved diagnostic performance. Unlike conventional heuristic or

The impact of tissue detection on diagnostic artificial intelligence algorithms in prostate digital pathology.

Tissue detection is a crucial first step in most digital pathology applications. By applying image segmentation algorithms, all tissue is delineated and background discarded from further analyses, improving both computational efficiency and analytical results. Details of the segmentation algorithm are rarely reported, and there is a lack of studies investigating the downstream effects of a poor segmentation algorithm. Disregarding tissue detection quality could jeopardize patient safety if diagnostically relevant parts of the specimen are excluded from analysis in clinical applications. This s

Masked Vascular Structure Segmentation and Completion in Retinal Images.

Early retinal vascular changes in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy often occur at a microscopic level. Accurate evaluation of retinal vascular networks at a micro-level could significantly improve our understanding of angiopathology and potentially aid ophthalmologists in disease assessment and management. Multiple angiogram-related retinal imaging modalities, including fundus, optical coherence tomography angiography, and fluorescence angiography, project continuous, inter-connected retinal microvascular networks into imaging domains. However, extracting the microvascular network, which

Uncertainty-aware segmentation quality prediction via deep learning Bayesian Modeling: Comprehensive evaluation and interpretation on skin cancer and liver segmentation.

Image segmentation is a critical step in computational biomedical image analysis, typically evaluated using metrics like the Dice coefficient during training and validation. However, in clinical settings without manual annotations, assessing segmentation quality becomes challenging, and models lacking reliability indicators face adoption barriers. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework for predicting segmentation quality without requiring ground truth annotations during test time. Our approach introduces two complementary frameworks: one leveraging predicted segmentation and uncerta

Application research of artificial intelligence software in the analysis of thyroid nodule ultrasound image characteristics.

Thyroid nodule, as a common clinical endocrine disease, has become increasingly prevalent worldwide. Ultrasound, as the premier method of thyroid imaging, plays an important role in accurately diagnosing and managing thyroid nodules. However, there is a high degree of inter- and intra-observer variability in image interpretation due to the different knowledge and experience of sonographers who have huge ultrasound examination tasks everyday. Artificial intelligence based on computer-aided diagnosis technology maybe improve the accuracy and time efficiency of thyroid nodules diagnosis. This stu

Dual-Stream Cross-Fusion Learning For Retinopathy of Prematurity Fundus Image Quality Assessment.

The considerable variability in images of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has the potential to influence the accuracy of clinical analysis and diagnosis. It is therefore essential to ensure the reliability of the assessment of fundus image quality in order to facilitate accurate subsequent tasks. The current automated image quality assessment techniques may not fully encompass the nuanced intricacies of ROP images, potentially resulting in erroneous outcomes. This paper presents a novel, specifically designed approach, namely RIQA, for the assessment of the quality of ROP images. The proposed

Coupling between visual alpha oscillations and default mode activity.

Although, on average, the magnitude of alpha oscillations (8 to 12 Hz) is decreased in task-relevant cortices during externally oriented attention, its fluctuations have significant consequences, with increased level of alpha associated with decreased level of visual processing and poorer behavioral performance. Functional MRI signals exhibit similar fluctuations. The default mode network (DMN) is on average deactivated in cognitive tasks requiring externally oriented attention. Momentarily insufficient deactivation of DMN, however, is often accompanied by decreased efficiency in stimulus proc

Structure-Aware Attention Prototype Network for Cross-Modality Few-Shot Brain Tumor Segmentation.

Multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in brain tumor diagnosis. However, the substantial physiological sensitivity discrepancies across imaging modalities create a severe domain gap that challenges current cross-modality segmentation methods. Many unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) approaches reduce this gap through image style translation or distribution alignment, which have shown promising results but may struggle to preserve modality-specific anatomical and pathological information. In contrast, few-shot segmentation (FSS) provides a promising alternative para

Does Adding a Modality Really Make Positive Impacts in Incomplete Multi-Modal Brain Tumor Segmentation?

Previous incomplete multi-modal brain tumor segmentation technologies, while effective in integrating diverse modalities, commonly deliver under-expected performance gains. The reason lies in that the new modality may cause confused predictions due to uncertain and inconsistent patterns and quality in some positions, where the direct fusion consequently raises the negative gain for the final decision. In this paper, considering the potentially negative impacts within a modality, we propose multi-modal Positive-Negative impact region Double Calibration pipeline, called PNDC, to mitigate misinfo

Unpaired multi-modal training and single-modal testing for detecting signs of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a serious multifocal condition that can involve various pelvic structures, with Pouch of Douglas (POD) obliteration being a significant clinical indicator for diagnosis. To circumvent the need for invasive diagnostic procedures like laparoscopy, research has increasingly focused on imaging-based methods such as transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The limited diagnostic accuracy achieved through manual interpretation of these imaging techniques has driven the development of automated classifiers that can effectively utilize both modalities. Quantitative Imaging in Inflammatory Arthritis: Between Tradition and Innovation.

Radiologic imaging is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring rheumatic inflammatory diseases. Particularly the emerging approach of precision medicine has increased the interest in quantitative imaging. Extensive research has shown that ultrasound allows a quantification of direct signs such as bone erosions and synovial thickness. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (CT) contribute to the quantitative assessment of secondary signs such as osteoporosis or lean mass loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), using different techniques and

Nononcologic applications of diffusion-weighted imaging in the gastrointestinal system.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review infectious, inflammatory, and auto-immune-mediated processes in the gastrointestinal system where diffusion-weighted imaging can be helpful as well as pitfalls associated with its use. CONCLUSION: Diffusion-weighted imaging has become an important and widely used tool in abdominal and pelvic MRI, but it has been used primarily for oncologic applications. As more body MRI protocols are routinely including diffusion-weighted imaging, this sequence can be useful in evaluating an increasing number of nononcologic processes.

4D rotational x-ray imaging of wrist joint dynamic motion.

Current methods for imaging joint motion are limited to either two-dimensional (2D) video fluoroscopy, or to animated motions from a series of static three-dimensional (3D) images. 3D movement patterns can be detected from biplane fluoroscopy images matched with computed tomography images. This involves several x-ray modalities and sophisticated 2D to 3D matching for the complex wrist joint. We present a method for the acquisition of dynamic 3D images of a moving joint. In our method a 3D-rotational x-ray (3D-RX) system is used to image a cyclically moving joint. The cyclic motion is synchroni

Exploratory analysis of Type B Aortic Dissection (TBAD) segmentation in 2D CTA images using various kernels.

Type-B Aortic Dissection is a rare but fatal cardiovascular disease characterized by a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, affecting 3.5 per 100,000 individuals annually. In this work, we explore the feasibility of leveraging two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models to perform accurate slice-by-slice segmentation of true lumen, false lumen and false lumen thrombus in Computed Tomography Angiography images. The study performed an exploratory analysis of three 2D U-Net models: the baseline 2D U-Net, a variant of U-Net with atrous convolutions, and a U-Net with a custom layer f

A comparative analysis of deep learning models for disease classification in multi-organ histopathological images.

Histopathological whole slide images (WSIs) provide critical information for disease diagnosis, yet their interpretation remains a time-consuming and expertise-dependent process. Recent advances in deep learning have shown promise in automating and improving histopathological analysis; however, the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) across multi-organ disease classification remains insufficiently explored. In this study, we applied CNN- and ViT-based classification models to WSIs of major human organs, including the heart, lung, liver, and pancre

Automatic melanoma detection using an optimized five-stream convolutional neural network.

Melanoma is among the deadliest forms of malignant skin cancer, with the number of cases increasing dramatically worldwide. Its early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. However, automatic melanoma detection has several significant challenges. These challenges include the lack of a balanced dataset, high variability within melanoma lesions, differences in the locations of skin lesions in images, the similarity between different skin lesions, and the presence of various artifacts. In addition, the previous deep-learning techniques for diagnosing melanoma cannot recognize

Artifactual Appearance of Thrombosis on Using Metal Artifact Reduction Software Reconstruction in Computed Tomographic Angiography.

The authors attempted to use metal artifact reduction software in 2 computed tomographic angiogram studies to decrease beam hardening. Although the beam hardening artifacts were reduced in the postprocessed images, there was an artifactual appearance of thrombosis in the adjacent arteries in the first case and in the inflow cannula of a left ventricular assist device in the second case. Comparison of the reconstructed images with the original images is therefore essential to avoid a misdiagnosis.

Pixel-level robust digital image correlation.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a well-established non-contact optical metrology method. It employs digital image analysis to extract the full-field displacements and strains that occur in objects subjected to external stresses. Despite recent DIC progress, many problematic areas which greatly affect accuracy and that can seldomly be avoided, received very little attention. Problems posed by the presence of sharp displacement discontinuities, reflections, object borders or edges can be linked to the analysed object's properties and deformation. Other problematic areas, such as image noise,

A two-dimensional deformable phantom for quantitatively verifying deformation algorithms.

PURPOSE: The incorporation of deformable image registration into the treatment planning process is rapidly advancing. For this reason, the methods used to verify the underlying deformation algorithms must evolve equally fast. This manuscript proposes a two-dimensional deformable phantom, which can objectively verify the accuracy of deformation algorithms, as the next step for improving these techniques. METHODS: The phantom represents a single plane of the anatomy for a head and neck patient. Inflation of a balloon catheter inside the phantom simulates tumor growth. CT and camera images of th
