Measles is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable infectious disease. The incidence of measles has been rising due to a confluence of factors, including international travel and vaccine hesitancy. The purpose of this Pharmacotherapy Update was to examine and appraise preventive measures and treatment options, both pharmacotherapy and supplements, used in measles management. Topics included ribavirin, measles-mumps-rubella vaccine post-exposure prophylaxis, immune globulin, antibiotics, vitamin A, and cod liver oil supplements. Parents, caregivers, and policymakers considering these intervent

In this study, the serological status of the southern Greek population in the 1–10-year, 11–20-year, 21–30-year and 31–40-year age groups with regard to Sabin vaccine strains and a collection of 15 recombinant and four non-recombinant poliovirus vaccine strains was determined. For all three poliovirus types, the highest neutralization test (NT) titres were observed in the 1–10- year age group, indicating a good response to vaccination. In general, the serological status of the population of southern Greece with regard to poliovirus is better for types 1 and 2 than for type 3. The presence of t

To eliminate the indigenous measles and rubella virus by 2012 in Japan, the strategy fro prevention of measles and rubella prevalence with measles-rubella (MR) vaccine was proposed. Since the vast majority of 1-year old infants are susceptible to measles and rubella, the first MR vaccine, the first MR vaccine should be administered at 1-year old to sustain the herd immunity. Since significant elevation of measles and rubella antibody titers were eliminated in a half of children after the second dose, the second dose of of MR vaccine within 1 year before elementary school entry is the effective

Invasive meningococcal disease due to serogroups A, C, Y and W-135 is a serious, vaccine-preventable, worldwide public-health problem. Despite early treatment and advances in medical care, morbidity and mortality rates have essentially remained unchanged. Monovalent, meningococcal serogroup C conjugate (MCC) vaccines against Neisseria meningitidis are effective in children under 2 years of age. MCC vaccines also provide indirect protection to unvaccinated individuals through herd immunity by reducing nasopharyngeal carriage in immunized individuals. Evidence from MCC and other conjugate vaccin

Recent work has provided new insights into the pathogenesis of the potentially life-threatening diarrheas caused by Vibrio cholerae and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC): a new mechanism (post-translational degradation), which is involved in the control of cholera toxin expression, has been discovered. Recent evidence also suggests that vibrios upregulate cholera toxin expression in response to intestinal fluid components, and enterotoxin-carrying bacterial outer membrane vesicles might have a function in ETEC pathogenesis. An important role of the environment is supported by the correla

New pneumococcal vaccines, consisting of 7-11 capsular polysaccharides coupled to protein carriers, are able to induce functionally active humoral and mucosal antibody responses. They also reduce mucosal carriage of pneumococci in the vaccinees. Preliminary results from efficacy trials suggest that about one-third of pneumococcal otitis could be prevented by using the seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. If these efficacy estimates are true throughout childhood, up to 1.2 million episodes of acute otitis are preventable annually in the US. The true impact of the vaccine on otitis burde

Epidemic group A meningococcal meningitis follows a unique and distinctive pattern in sub-Saharan Africa. Advances in molecular and field epidemiology have begun to elucidate the mechanisms of meningococcal meningitis epidemics. Epidemics result from a complex combination of host, organism, and environmental risk factors. Recent studies suggest that "antigenic shifts" in group A meningococcal clones may trigger an outbreak of disease by suddenly decreasing herd immunity within a population. Although the introduction of new group A meningococcal strains into a susceptible population contributes

Patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) are at increased risk of numerous vaccine-preventable infections owing to a combination of disease-related immune dysregulation, immunosuppressive therapies - including glucocorticoids - and comorbidities. Age-related immunosenescence further increases this susceptibility in older patients. The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic and measles outbreaks have underscored the importance of optimizing vaccination strategies and improving adherence to recommendations. Nevertheless, coverage for routinely recommended vaccines, including influenza and pneu

OBJECTIVES: Characterizing susceptibility profiles across age groups and administrative units is essential for targeted vaccination and control of resurgent vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, but is often limited by the lack of historical vaccination records.
METHODS: We proposed a methodology based on the screening method that uses routine surveillance data, such as case age and vaccination status, along with an estimate of vaccine effectiveness, to estimate age-stratified susceptibility to a vaccine-preventable disease.
RESULTS: Applying this method to the 10 most affected Brazilia

OBJECTIVES: Measles remains a public health challenge despite effective vaccines; recent declines in coverage led to resurgent outbreaks worldwide. This study aims to estimate measles immunoglobulin (Ig)G seroprevalence in Bahrain's population and identify immunity gaps using serological data from the national fever and rash surveillance system.
METHODS: We analyzed fever and rash surveillance data from Bahrain (2021-2025). Suspected measles cases were tested for measles IgG antibodies. Seroprevalence was stratified by age, nationality, vaccination status, and governorate. Overall prevalence

Mumps remains a public health challenge worldwide despite being a vaccine-preventable disease. This review outlines the historical development and contrasting mumps vaccination policies in the United States and Japan and their epidemiological consequences. In the United States, where the two-dose measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is routinely administered, the incidence of mumps has markedly decreased. Recently, however, sporadic outbreaks have emerged, driven by breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals. These resurgences are driven largely by waning immunity, coupled with

Vaccination is a tool of Newcastle disease (ND) control among broilers. This study aimed at determining the immunity status of sampled broilers against ND at a live bird market in Kano, Northwest Nigeria, and its epidemiological implication. A cross-sectional study of antibodies against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was carried out among broiler chicken in a live bird market in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria. A total of 471 samples was tested successfully. NDV antibody titer was assayed using hemagglutination-inhibition test (HI) and ND indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Serolo

Three of the seven serotypes of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus are prevailing in India. A massive vaccination campaign is on to control and eradicate the disease from the country. However, FMD vaccines provide short term immunity, hence regular assessment of antibody level in the vaccinated herds is indispensible for the success of the control programme. The antibodies are quantitatively estimated, either by virus neutralization test or by end-point dilution liquid-phase-blocking ELISA (LPBE). Millions of cattle and buffalo in the country are now systematically vaccinated, and thousands of

Influenza represents a substantial global healthcare burden, with annual epidemics resulting in 3-5 million cases of severe illness with a significant associated mortality. In addition, the risk of a virulent and lethal influenza pandemic has generated widespread and warranted concern. Currently licensed influenza vaccines are limited in their ability to induce efficacious and long-lasting herd immunity. In addition, and as evidenced by the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, there can be a significant delay between the emergence of a pandemic influenza and an effective, antibody-inducing vaccine. There is

To obtain insight into mumps immunity 9 years after introduction of vaccination in The Netherlands, antibodies were measured in a national sample (n = 8298) and in clustered religious groups with low vaccine acceptance (n = 254). All sera were tested by indirect ELISA, and agreement with neutralization assay was assessed in a subsample (n = 623). Overall seroprevalence in the adult age groups in the national sample was 96.2% (95% confidence interval 95.4-97.0%). Seroprevalence was somewhat lower in the vaccinated age groups, but still sufficient to maintain herd immunity. After the first dose

The relevance of trypanosome-induced immunosuppression in relation to the efficacy of vaccine-induced immunity was studied in mice. Mice were immunised with crude Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae homogenate vaccine and infected with T. spiralis and/or Trypanosoma brucei. Vaccination significantly decreased adult worm burden (p<0. 05) and accelerated worm expulsion in mice infected with T. spiralis only. T. brucei superinfection resulted in monocytosis, suppressed eosinophilia, significant decrease in PCV (p<0.001), higher numbers of adult worms (p<0.001) and failure to expel all adult worms

BACKGROUND: A previous cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) showed that Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) 10 and PCV13 were not cost-effective for universal immunization among children in Thailand. Given recent changes in the evidence of efficacy, herd effects and price, a CEA of PCVs should be revisited. This study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of PCV10 and PCV13 compared to no PCV vaccination in Thai children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A Markov model was developed under a societal perspective with a lifetime horizon. Inputs were derived from a comprehensive literature review. Costs

Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) lineages have become major responsible of healthcare- and community-associated infections in human population. Bovine MRSA are sporadically detected in the dairy herd, but its presence enhances the risk of zoonosis. Some lineages are able to lose the specific host tropism, being easily transmitted from animals to humans and vice-versa. The present study aims at clarifying the epidemiology of MRSA intramammary infections in a closed dairy herd, which was running a mastitis control program since years. Quarter milk samples were collected from all lactating

This study reviewed the use of COVID-19 antiviral agents in Taiwan (2022-2025), focusing on how policy changes influenced drug deployment, and explored trends in outpatient visits, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and mortality. Policy changes and usage patterns of Remdesivir, Molnupiravir, and Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir, were tracked using the Stockpile Management Information System (SMIS). As policies shifted to focus on the treatment of mild-to-severe cases in high-risk groups, the percentages of both oral antivirals and Remdesivir use increased. Remdesivir use (among hospitalized

To develop immunity against Covid-19, vaccination was prioritized by World Health Organization (WHO). According to WHO, at least 70% of a population should be vaccinated to develop herd immunity. For this purpose, several kinds of vaccination had been introduced. One of them was Sinopharm inactivated Covid 19 vaccine, that was administered for a trial purpose to the medical students from 16th august 2021. So our purpose was to see the side effects following vaccination to sweep out the fear regarding Sinopharm vaccination. This cross-sectional analytical study was carried out from June to Sept
