Childhood adversity and adult health-risk behaviors: Examining the roles of emotion dysregulation and urgency.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are important public health concerns, with links to higher prevalence rates of both health-risk behaviors and physical health difficulties in adulthood. Research has demonstrated an association between early adversity and long-term health-risk behavior development. The current study assessed the role of emotion dysregulation and facets of impulsivity as potential mediators in the relation between ACEs and general health-risk behaviors, including alcohol-related consequences and risky sexual behavior. College students (N = 668) completed online questionnaire

Dimensions of impulsivity in relation to eating disorder recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity is associated with eating pathology, but different dimensions of impulsivity have not been extensively studied in the … es. These groups and non-eating disorder controls were compared on impulsivity facets from the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS): Urgency (negative urgency), Premeditation (lack of), Perseverance (lack of), and Sensation Seeking. RESULTS: Negative urgency (the tendency to engage in impulsive behavior to alleviate negative affect) was related to recovery. The ful …

Psychopathological considerations on the relationship between bulimia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The relationship between eating disorders, impulse control disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder as part of a so-called 'obsessive-compulsive spectrum' is discussed, with particular emphasis on the relationship between eating disorders (particularly bulimia) and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The empirical studies on comorbidity, personality and familiarity are briefly reviewed. Both similarities and differences found in personality, body image, mental rumination, fears, physical exercises, rituals, impulses (bulimic binging and obsessive impulses) and purging behaviors of these patients

Dimensional analysis of ADHD subtypes in rats.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a heterogeneous disorder that is classified into three subtypes in which the main symptoms, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, are expressed with various degrees of severity. The nature of the biological dysfunction sustaining each subtype (common or distinct) is unknown, and animal models encompassing different subtypes are needed. METHODS: A cluster analysis separated subgroups of rats on the basis of similarities in both impulsivity and attentional scores in the five-choice serial reaction time task. These subgroups were cha

Impulsivity and test meal intake in obese binge eating women.

Greater impulsivity has been observed in those with chemical (cocaine, marijuana, alcohol) and behavioral addictions (gambling, sex, shopping), as well as in individuals with personality and conduct disorders. Greater impulsivity has also been described in those with Bulimia Nervosa and attributed to aberrations in serotonin, as has eating in response to negative affect. However, less is known about the impact of impulsivity on eating behavior in obese humans in general, and in those who meet sub-clinical and full clinical criteria for Binge Eating Disorder (BED) in particular. The Mediator Role of Early Maladaptive Schemas Between Childhood Sexual Abuse and Impulsive Symptoms in Female Survivors of CSA.

Child abuse is a traumatic experience that may have psychological consequences such as dysfunctional beliefs. The aim of this study was to analyze the impulsive behaviors (alcohol abuse, gambling, drug abuse, eating disorders, Internet abuse, videogame abuse, shopping and sex addiction) in sexual abuse survivors and to study the mediating role of early maladaptive schemas in the appearance of impulsive behaviors in adult female victims. The sample consisted of 182 adult women who had suffered childhood sexual abuse (CSA), mostly referred by associations for the treatment of childhood abuse and…

Impulsivity, gender, and response to fenfluramine challenge in borderline personality disorder.

Behavioral impulsivity in borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with indices of diminished central serotonergic function, independent of suicidal behavior, depression or alcohol use disorder. Many of these studies have been conducted among males in specialized settings. Studies of BPD females, who constitute the majority of BPD patients, are generally conducted in community settings and report inconsistent findings. We studied gender differences in behavioral impulsivity and the prolactin response to D,L-fenfluramine (FEN) in BPD subjects in a community setting. A FEN challenge s

A computational model of the Cambridge gambling task with applications to substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is central to all forms of externalizing psychopathology, including problematic substance use. The Cambridge Gambling task (CGT) is a popular neurocognitive task used to assess impulsivity in both clinical and healthy populations. However, the traditional methods of analysis in the CGT do not fully capture the multiple cognitive mechanisms that give rise to impulsive behavior, which can lead to underpowered and difficult-to-interpret behavioral measures. OBJECTIVES: The current study presents the cognitive modeling approach as an alternative to traditional methods and …

The aromatase inhibitor 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD) reduces disinhibitory behavior in intact adult male rats treated with a high dose of testosterone.

Anabolic androgenic steroids and high testosterone doses have been reported to induce impulsive behavior in man and behavioral disinhibition in rats. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether aromatization of testosterone to estradiol is of importance for the behavioral disinhibiting effect of a high testosterone dose in adult male rats. Testosterone administered via five testosterone-filled silastic capsules implanted subcutaneously (s.c.) to non-castrated, group-housed rats for six days induced behavioral disinhibition in a modified Vogel's drinking conflict model and yield…

Hypothalamus-hippocampus circuitry regulates impulsivity via melanin-concentrating hormone.

Behavioral impulsivity is common in various psychiatric and metabolic disorders. Here we identify a hypothalamus to telencephalon neural pathway for regulating impulsivity involving communication from melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH)-expressing lateral hypothalamic neurons to the ventral hippocampus subregion (vHP). Results show that both site-specific upregulation (pharmacological or chemogenetic) and chronic downregulation (RNA interference) of MCH communication to the vHP increases impulsive responding in rats, indicating that perturbing this system in either direction elevates impulsivi

Computerized neuropsychological examination of impulsiveness: A selective review.

There is a rapidly accumulating body of knowledge related to the neurobiology of impulsiveness from multidisciplinary neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies. This paper reviews recent research on impulsiveness in the context of neuropsychological theory and research. It has been emphasized that the controversy regarding the results of neuropsychological studies is related to different aspects of impulsiveness. The term "impulsivity" is related to more than one anatomical network among several brain regions. Impaired inhibition control, which has cognitive and behavioral dimensions, has a

Increased pupil dilation to happy faces in children with hyperactive/impulsive symptoms of ADHD.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with disrupted emotional processes including impaired regulation of approach behavior and positive affect, irritability, and anger. Enhanced reactivity to emotional cues may be an underlying process. Pupil dilation is an indirect index of arousal, modulated by the autonomic nervous system and activity in the locus coeruleus-noradrenergic system. In the current study, pupil dilation was recorded while 8- to 12- year old children (n = 71, 26 with a diagnosis of ADHD and 45 typically developing), viewed images of emotional faces. Paren

Different types of self-injurious behavior in bulimia nervosa.

In a previous study, we demonstrated the validity of the distinction, in bulimia nervosa (BN), between compulsive self-injurious behavior (SIB), such as hair pulling and onycophagia, and impulsive SIB, such as skin cutting and burning. The aim of the present study is to investigate the clinical and psychological correlates of these two categories of SIB in BN. The sample consisted of 175 consecutive patients with BN, diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria. Subjects were assessed by means of a semistructured interview and self-reported questionnaires (Eating Disorders Inventory [EDI] and Hopkin

Resting-state voxel-wise dynamic effective connectivity predicts risky decision-making in patients with bipolar disorder type I.

Patients with Bipolar Disorder type I (BD-I) exhibit maladaptive risky decision-making, which is related to impulsivity, suicide attempts, and aggressive behavior. Currently, there is a lack of effective predictive methods for early intervention in risky behaviors for patients with BD-I. This study aimed to predict risky behavior in patients with BD-I using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). We included 48 patients with BD-I and 124 healthy controls (HC) and constructed voxel-wise functional connectivity (FC), dynamic FC (dFC), effective connectivity (EC), and dynam

Restless Legs Syndrome and Impulsive Decision-Making: Impact of Symptom Severity, Chronotype and Interoception.

BACKGROUND: Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder reported to be associated with impulsivity and impairments in interoception and emotional regulation. However, limited research has explored the combined influence of RLS severity, psychological factors, and chronotype on impulsive decision-making and risk-taking behavior in RLS patients. OBJECTIVES: To assess impulsive-decision making and its modulation by RLS severity, chronotype, and psychological factors (including interoception, anxiety, alexithymia, and sleep quality) in RLS patients compared to healthy controls (HC).

Inhibitory control and problematic Internet-pornography use - The important balancing role of the insula.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diminished control over a specific behavior is a core characteristic in addictive behaviors such as problematic Internet-pornography (IP) use. First studies suggest that a hyperactivity of the impulsive system is one reason for impulsive behaviors in the context of problematic IP use. The tripartite-process theory of addiction explains neurocognitive mechanisms beyond common dual-process theories in addictive behaviors. However, the role of the reflective and interoceptive system is still unresolved. METHODS: The study comprised a stop-signal task (SST) including neutral …

Lithium, but not valproic acid or carbamazepine, suppresses impulsive-like action in rats.

RATIONALE: Higher impulsivity is a pathological symptom in several psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder, and is a risk factor f … s a suppressive effect on impulsive action independent of the anorexic effect. Lithium may suppress impulsive behavior and thereby decrease the risk of suicide. The present results could provide an explanation for the antisuicidal effects of lithium and suggest that lithium could be a beneficial treatment for impulsivity-related disorders.

Identifying Associated Factors for Illegal Acts among Patients with Gambling Disorder and ADHD.

Illegal behaviors have been reported in gambling disorder (GD) as well as in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Likewise, ADHD symptomatology has been observed in patients with GD. We aimed to examine the association between ADHD symptomatology, personality traits and impulsivity in a sample of treatment-seeking patients with GD (n = 204) with and without a criminal report. The subjects were evaluated before starting treatment using different self-administered instruments. Among those who had committed an illegal act, two groups were made depending on whether or

Brain circuitry of compulsivity and impulsivity.

Impulsivity and compulsivity have been considered opposite poles of a continuous spectrum, but their relationship appears to be more complex. Disorders characterized by impulsivity often have features of compulsivity and vice versa. The overlaps of the constructs of compulsivity and impulsivity warrant additional investigation, not only to identify the similarities and differences, but also to examine the implications for prevention and treatment strategies of both compulsive and impulsive behaviors.
