AIM: To test whether infant mortality from clearly respiratory causes has a consistent male excess that is different from the male excess in most cardiac conditions.
METHODS: Analysis of male excess in infant mortality data from the United States and from north European countries. Data are analyzed for the period 1979-2002 in autopsied and unautopsied cohorts.
RESULTS: Several modes of respiratory death in infancy are characterized by an approximate 50% male excess. This common excess is demonstrated in vital statistics for infant respiratory distress syndrome, sudden infant death syndrome,

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE food allergy manifesting as profuse, repetitive vomiting, sometimes with diarrhea, leading to dehydration and lethargy that can be severe and lead to shock. Despite the potential severity, awareness of FPIES is low and diagnosis is often delayed, especially in those triggered by solid foods. Presence of vomits and duration of more than 1 minute are the key differential factors to distinguish FPIES from brief resolved unexplained events. We report a case of a 6-month-old infant finally diagnosed as having kiwi induced FPIES.

Botulism is caused by the blockage of the neural transmission in the cholinergic synapses by botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) which is produced by Clostridium botulinum or other Clostridia. The classic form of botulism occurs after the ingestion of food contaminated by BoNT. The course of the infection can be asymptomatic, mild with subtle paralysis ("failure to thrive") oder severe with generalized paralysis ("floppy infant"). Infected infants can also die sudden and unexpectedly. These deaths often are attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), unless a thorough postmortem examination rev

Isolation of lipase-positive Clostridium botulinum from fecal specimens establishes the diagnosis of infant botulism, contributes to the diagnosis of food-borne botulism, and is most easily accomplished by use of selective media. Modification of an available selective medium, C. botulinum inhibitory medium (CBI), enabled more rapid isolation of C. botulinum. The modified medium (botulinum selective medium [BSM] contained (per liter) 25 g of dehydrated heart infusion broth, 20 g of agar, 30 ml of egg yolk suspension, 250 mg of cycloserine, 76 mg of sulfamethoxazole, 4 mg of trimethoprim, and 10

The task of providing infants adequate amounts of nutritious milk, in spite of mothers' ability to produce breast milk, has never been easy. In America cow's milk became the food of choice when mothers ceased to breast-feed their infants. In the mid-1800s advances in bacteriology and chemistry led to a beginning understanding of the role of microbes in food and the development of commercial proprietary formulas. Many mothers discontinued breast-feeding at an early age and relied on these products for their children. With the growth of cities, dairy farms were pushed many miles from the consume

This paper reports preliminary results from a study of child feeding practices in a rural area of Zimbabwe. Although Zimbabwe has relatively low infant mortality rates, it still has high child malnutrition rates. Several factors, including sex roles and relations between the sexes, access to resources, food costs and availability, time and energy costs of food production and preparation, and illness beliefs and practices, especially those concerning diarrhea and malnutrition, are examined as possible determinants of feeding practices and nutritional and health status. Results are compared to r

BACKGROUND: The Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, enacted under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, is a reality for many working families. As public policies are enacted, unintended consequences for infants/children must be minimized. Child advocates in Wisconsin, leading this nation in reforming Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), are concerned about supporting eligible infants/children as safety-net programs are unlinked.
OBJECTIVE: This study reviews the enrollment status of 4 linked programs over time in Wisconsin, from January 1

Foodborne botulism is caused by ingestión of a preformed toxin produced in food by C. botulinum. The most frequent source is home-canned foods, in which spores that survive an inadequate cooking and canning process germinate, reproduce, and produce this toxin in the anaerobic environment of the canned food. From 1992 to 2003, 34 cases of food-borne cases and 275 cases of infant botulism were reported in Argentina. The severity of symptoms depends on the amount of toxin ingested. Mild cases may not seek medical attention at all. A patient presenting only nausea and mild neurological symptoms ma

In 1976 physicians in California reported the presence of botulism in infancy. Over a period of a few days infants developed generalized weakness and lost autonomic functions. The severity of infant botulism has varied from feeding difficulties to paralysis. No toxin was found in the infants' food, but it was detected in the stool along with C. botulinum spores and organism. This suggested that infants consumed the spores, which germinated into organisms, which produced the toxin.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) typically occur in developing countries. Notably, ID and IDA can affect an infant's emotion, cognition, and development. Breast milk is considered the best food for infants. However, recent studies have indicated that breastfeeding for more than six months increases the risk of ID. This study investigated the prevalence of ID and IDA, as well as the association between feeding type and iron nutritional status in northern Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted on infants who returned to the well-baby clinic for routine examination fro

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends nutritionally adequate complementary feeding (CF) through the introduction of indigenous foodstuffs and local foods while breastfeeding for at least 2 years. To determine the adequacy of the contribution of CF to the diets of Guatemalan infants at the 7th-12th month of life receiving high-intensity continued breastfeeding.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: Critical nutrient densities for CF were modelled using age- and sex-specific energy and protein requirements assuming children to be at the 50th weight percentile of local peers and 15th

In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), enteric infections pose a significant threat to children's health. However, understanding the specifics of when, where, and how young children in LMICs are exposed to enteric pathogens and the roles of animal reservoirs, environmental media, and human hosts play during exposure remains limited. This study systematically evaluates infants' exposure to E. coli through various pathways in the rural Haramaya woreda of Ethiopia. Between June 2021 and June 2022, we conducted over 1300 hours of structured behavioral observations on 79 infants when aged 4-8

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding provides nutrients and antibodies crucial for developing infants and their immune systems. Understanding the current breastfeeding and weaning practices helps identify areas requiring improvements to boost infant health outcomes. The World Health Organization and other health bodies recommend that babies be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. Then, complementary feeding should be introduced along with breastfeeding, which should be continued for up to two years or more.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the perception and practices of breast

Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) is rare and usually manifests in infants as dysphagia, failure to thrive, and food impaction. Dilatation is considered to be the first-line therapy for CES, but the incidence of complications (perforation and mediastinitis) is relatively high. We report two cases of CES treated by thoracoscopic resection without prior dilatation. Both infants recovered without recurrent stenosis and were able to eat solid food soon after surgery. One had postoperative gastroesophageal reflux and eventually required fundoplication. Thoracoscopic resection could be a valid op

Observational studies demonstrating reduced rates of infections, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and mortality in preterm infants fed their own mother's milk, as opposed to formula, have prompted endeavors to achieve similar effects with the right choice of food and food additives. In a systematic review of meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we considered nutritional interventions aimed at reducing the rates of infections, NEC, or mortality in very preterm infants. The overall effects of particular interventions were presented as risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals.

Reproduction could be the most important control point for the spread of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas). Understanding the drivers of reproduction is necessary to determine which interventions may work best, in which locations, and at what time of year. We analyzed monthly variation in the proportion of estrous females and black infants in two troops inhabiting two different sites (Dam and Al Hada) in Saudi Arabia over the course of one year (one week per month; ~720 h per site-year; non-contemporaneous). The effects of season, rainfall, natural food diversity, and anthropogenic foods wer

Uni-modal orofacial stimulation (OFS) for preventing very preterm infants' oral disorders is highly controversial. Our study sought to demonstrate that OFS reduced cardio-respiratory events and improved food autonomy in a population of very preterm infants. Our study was randomized, controlled, prospective, and unicentric. The preterm included were born between 26-29 weeks gestational age (GA) with a corrected postnatal age <33 weeks GA. They were randomized into two groups: the experimental group underwent OFS, according to a protocol established, over 10 consecutive days, and the control gro
